For my own reference as much as anything.

+ [community profile] tightpresent is a Sarah Connor Chronicles vid exchanges, with signups opening today.

+ Originated on tumblr but now spread across fandom, it has been declared that is Femslash February. There's a lot of activity on tumblr, including this call for seeing more femslash for Black women, but there's also discussion at [community profile] girlgay.

+ [community profile] halfamoon / [livejournal.com profile] halfamoon has started up again. Two weeks of celebrating female characters, whee!

+ [community profile] purimgifts is open - sign up to make and receive gift baskets of small fanworks about Jewish characters and/or women and/or people on the run from evil viziers.

+ And over at [community profile] white_lotus, the Lunar New Year is approaching and we'll be posting exchange fanworks soon! (If you didn't sign up for the exchange but think you might be able to pinch hit for Avatar:tLA or Legend of Korra, email whitelotusmods at gmail to be added to the mailing list.)

I'm not sure how much of the above I'll be able to participate in due to being super busy*, but I can't wait to see the results!

* I am working away on all of your commissions - thank you again for those, so much - as well what feels like a slightly absurd amount of other things. I think I'm on top of it all! But if I'm supposed to be doing something for you and I've gone suspiciously quiet, it's always okay to get in touch and give me a nudge, I find that v helpful.

+ New entries over at the hug fest including fic for The Hunger Games, Lord of the Rings, Star Trek XI, Harry Potter, Soul Eater, BBC Sherlock and XMFC. All are lovely. <3333

+ The current challenge over at [community profile] vidrecs is character studies!

+ This month's challenge at [community profile] kink_bingo is super cool - themed gift baskets on a range of topics from 'all the feels' to 'supervillains', it's very awesome.

+ The winners are up for The Fourth Wall vidding awards - many thanks to [livejournal.com profile] obsessive24 and [livejournal.com profile] hollywoodgrrl for shortlisting Blue Caravan and writing such a kind review for it. :DDD

+ I am currently rolling around in the middle of ten whole days off work, it's pretty magical. Though I should try to remember that I aim to actually do things like finish my Remix story and finally make that auction vid for a very patient [personal profile] counteragent. Yay making things! And also sleeping, there has been a lot of that too.
As LJ's latest mess has displaced some more people, it seems as good a time as any to post a quick recap on Places I Am On The Internet:

[personal profile] such_heights continues to be my main internet presence, with [livejournal.com profile] such_heights acting effectively as a feed. I check my DW and LJ reading lists side by side, so continue to keep up with my LJ-only friends/comms etc.

I'm on tumblr as [tumblr.com profile] such-heights and am on twitter as well, though that is currently locked down due to job hunting etc. I'm always contactable either via PM on any of those websites or such.heights at gmail (I am also sometimes on gchat, though admittedly intermittently of late!)

My fic is archived at [archiveofourown.org profile] such_heights and I may get around to putting other fanworks up there as well at some point. My masterlist is mostly comprehensive though sometimes it takes me a little while to update with recent stuff, in which case the tags on my DW journal are your best bet.

Active things I mod:

[tumblr.com profile] marriedinspace (Team Eleven graphics etc)
[community profile] ponds_daily (see above)
[community profile] dwfiction (Doctor Who fanworks)
[community profile] white_lotus (Avatar: the Last Airbender & Legend of Korra fanworks and discussion)

... I think that's it? Certainly enough self-promotion for the moment. Probably I should just go c&p the above into my profile already.

But also! As some people are moving more over to Dreamwidth - if you're looking for a place to get started, [personal profile] anatsuno has some great links & comm recs.

Some DW comms I enjoy/find useful include: [community profile] kink_bingo, [community profile] amplificathon, [community profile] dark_agenda, [community profile] fandomcalendar, [community profile] fucking_meds, [community profile] gallifrey_times, [community profile] nuggan, [community profile] the_dw_herald and [community profile] vidding.
I always appreciate [livejournal.com profile] cleolinda's posts about living with mental illness, and today's resonated: A cheerful way to start December (discussion of depression, mention of eating disorders, eta: also discusses the perceived 'legitimacy' of physical illness in a way that does not reflect everyone's experiences). This stood out to me particularly as words to live by:

Because even when you grasp the idea that depression is an ailment and not a personal failing... it still feels like a personal failing. You know you're clinically depressed, but you feel like you're just lazy, lonely, hopeless, pathetic. Or sometimes you don't realize you're ill, because those feelings of anxiety and shame and helplessness sneak up on you and feel legitimate, and that's why you don't realize you need help. I mean, I've been on medication and under quarterly medical supervision for fourteen years now and my own mood cycles still sneak up on me, over and over. It's hard to teach yourself to say, "You are an awesome person, and your awesomeness is a default, and so if you feel less than awesome, you need to get your awesome tuned up."

And this is a COMPLETELY charming story about a found family consisting of a cat and a dog, complete with pictures. The story of Shaun and Meow. <3
Note: both posts contain discussion of and graphic examples of threatening online harassment.

+ Skud at Geek Feminism on On being harassed: a little GF history and some current events.

+ s.e. smith at Tiger Beatdown on On Blogging, Threats, and Silence.

I have to admit, I didn't know. I honestly didn't know it was quite so widespread and quite so bad. Both articles are horrifying and eye-opening, and I'm grateful to the authors for sharing their experiences in spite of the risks.

Nine posts to peruse!

+ Over at [community profile] white_lotus we're gearing up for the Lunar New Year exchange (such awesome submissions already, I am so excited). Not officially participating but fancy making an A:TLA fanwork? We have a post of people's requests so you can make treats, due February 10th.

+ [livejournal.com profile] pocky_slash is hosting a Not My Fandom Fest - you go and write for fandoms you don't know based on what you've absorbed through fannish osmosis. Hilarity no doubt ensues.

+ Festivids sign-ups close tomorrow.

+ [personal profile] thingswithwings: Festivids: Still Awesome, which is yet another reason why you should sign up!

+ Yuletide sign-ups fandom nominations are open until Wednesday night.

+ [community profile] ladiesbigbang is hosting round 1.5 - still open to multimedia projects but with a shorter timetable and minimums.

+ Camelot Remix is live! Lots of Merlin fanworks to go and peruse - I've only had a chance to read a couple so far, but it all looks wonderful.

+ [personal profile] china_shop made Got The Time, a really delightful Eleventh Doctor vid that captures the steampunk glory of the new TARDIS and also Eleventy's whirligig physicality which I love beyond all reason.

+ [livejournal.com profile] kaydeefalls continues her series of Merlin character study vids set to Vienna Teng songs with Augustine, which is Merlin's one. It's lovely.

+ via [personal profile] littlebutfierce: Zuko's on a boat. :D

+ I have now watched through 2x16 of Fringe. I think my reaction can be best be summed as a;lsdkjas why do I have other things to do with my life?! I will post coherently on the subject when I'm caught up, particularly with regard to how you need Olivia Dunham in your life and also Astrid and Nina and hey, the guys are pretty great too.
*Because that makes a change around here, of course. *g*

So, there is this flowchart doing the rounds that purportedly sets out criteria for determining strong female characters but in reality ... doesn't really do that. (When your list of people who don't fit the bill includes Sarah Connor, and also real people like Yoko Ono, your argument is invalid.)

links!

[personal profile] heathershaped: fuck that noise

[livejournal.com profile] irony_rocks: FEMALE .GIF PARTY

[personal profile] nextian: female character yenta meme - basically, you go and list some character archetypes you like, people tell you about women who fit the bill! I'm having a lot of fun over there.

+ As a response to the above, the It Gets Better project. I keep watching, and smiling, and crying because I'm a giant sap and I wish I'd seen some of these videos when I was fourteen.

+ In 'I blame [personal profile] glass_icarus' news, I appear to have been sucked into Health Month. I like the format - it's very easy to personalise and focus on your own health needs, including mental health, sleep and adding things to your diet. I've signed up for a little preventative mental health care and a couple of things I've been meaning to do to improve my blood sugar control. Not to mention that I couldn't resist joining Team White Lotus. Sign up for the October round runs for the next twelve hours or so.

+ [personal profile] megwrites on sci-fi and ablism:

It seems as though when science fiction envisions a better, or at least more advanced, version of humanity it is one without disability, and thus one without disabled people. When you imagine a future without disability, it is a future in which you imagine that there are no disabled people.

+ [community profile] dark_agenda is hosting the Racebending Revenge Ficathon:

Re-write one or more white characters in the fandom(s) of your choice as chromatic/non-white/PoC, in a story of at least 500 words, with some acknowledgment of how the racial difference would make a difference to the story being told.

+ [personal profile] damned_colonial is writing a great Holmes/Watson series for [community profile] kink_bingo - the first two installments are Hypothesis (obedience) and The Imperative Voice (verbal humiliation).

This weekend's Star Trek Rewatch episode is going to be Where No Man Has Gone Before, and the consensus is that we should continue chronologically from here on out. If you have any questions or problems finding a way to watch the episode, let me know!

The 2nd Asian Women Carnival is now up courtesy of [personal profile] oyceter, on the theme of intra/inter/transnationalities.

I look forward to getting stuck into the above and all the other things I have bookmarked when I enter that blessed state known as the summer holiday come Thursday. \o/ Oh, I have so much fic to write. Bonus: my parents, long-resigned to my terminal geekitude, have agreed to celebrate the two decade anniversary of my entrance into the world by contributing to my heart's desire: better vidding software. Final Cut Express, soon you shall be mine, my pretty, soon. And then I will probably pass from vid farr into some kind of vidding coma while I try and teach myself how to use it in time to get a vid submitted for VVC.
Oh hey, this is cool! [livejournal.com profile] winkingstar has recorded a podfic of my Merlin story The Breath Before Our New Beginning.

File info and download information here. She's done a wonderful job, I really like it!

Also, for anyone bored and looking for inspiration on a Sunday, [livejournal.com profile] rudhampaiel is hosting a multi-fandom drabble meme. Fun! I'm going to go throw down some multi-fandom prompt action in a moment.
Hi! Guys. I went to see Star Trek on Friday. This was a BAD IDEA. Because I loved it and so obviously I had to come running back to fandom and read reaction posts and fic and so on. So, don't mind me, I'm just popping in, hunting around for team!fic and then disappearing off again. Oh, and posting a quick something in a bit. :D

squee and spoilers! )

Seeing as I've snuck out and broken curfew anyway (I'm so grounded later), a few links and things:

[livejournal.com profile] springtime_gen reveals are now up. A lot of great genfic there! I wrote a story for [livejournal.com profile] chibitoaster about Ollivander and Luna, Heartstring. [G, 1750 words, in the summer after the war, they need wands again.]

[livejournal.com profile] magnetic_pole is hosting a couple of rec communities that will be running in the near future:

[livejournal.com profile] api_recs, reccing media about Asian lives outside of Asia, starting tomorrow and running until May 31st -- sign up to rec something yourself here.
[livejournal.com profile] lgbtq_recs, reccing queer-themed media throughout June -- sign up to rec something yourself here.
The Asian Women Carnival is now live! So much shiny reading!

I am lapping up all the things you're all posting for Poetry Month - I'm not much of a poetry connoisseur, I just know what I like, which often seems to be the same as what you like. Here's something I haven't seen posted yet this year.

Ulysses )
So, it's my personal opinion that Valentine's Day is by and large a crass commercialisation of romance. (I mean, how anti-romantic is it to feel obligated to pull the stops out in order to validate your feelings on some arbitrary day?) But you can either feel angry about it, or you can co-opt it.

I always enjoy a good co-opting*.

Therefore! As I am fan of telling people that you like and appreciate and love them any time, and this Saturday is supposedly about just that? I'm there.

[livejournal.com profile] svmadelyn has a Valentine's Day Game, open until 6pm GMT tomorrow - you go, you email her up to fourteen valentines for eljay people you like, she posts them on the 14th!

So I'm going to go take a break from the bodyswap story I'm writing** and do that.

* Speaking of co-opting. I've never seen an episode of Smallville in my life, but I've got to tell you: [livejournal.com profile] bop_radar's vid I Kissed A Girl is my new favourite. Every time that bloody song comes on the radio now, I shall smile loftily, sit back, and think that secretly it is all about Clark Kent and his experiments with heterosexuality. (he kissed a girl! he liked it! he hopes his boyfriend don't mind it! \o/) Also, hilarious editing is hilarious.

** This is the year in which I write all the fic cliches, apparently? I bet a million of your finest internet pounds that nobody will guess who's getting swapped, though. It's not crack or anything (ha, okay, that's a clue, it is not at all cracky in this particular fandom), but still. You won't guess. Sekrit characters are sekrit, and also remain platonic throughout, is that very odd?
