Hello! I am VJing a multifandom vids show for Fanworks Con, and I would love vid recs! Especially for things made in the last few years, I think my collection is pretty weighted towards vids made circa 2010 - 2015. Self recs extremely welcome.

For the purposes of this, I'm defining multifandom as any vid that uses at least two different fandoms that don't have connecting canon, and where the vid footage represents its fandom and isn't being repurposed for a constructed reality vid or similar. In other words, a Doctor Who/Torchwood vid wouldn't count, and a book trailer for Ancillary Justice that takes footage from half a dozen sources wouldn't count.
Having done the first one of these in 2016, I now theoretically never have to come up with a vidshow idea for Vidukon again!

This year's Retrospective show will be vids from 2009. A fine vintage, I have many vids already on my shortlist but would be very happy for more to make sure I don't miss anything!

Notable fannish moments of 2009 from my POV included: the first new!Trek film, Merlin, Community, Leverage, the end of BSG, the Tenth Doctor's final episodes, Torchwood: Children of Earth and the subsequent fallout. The MCU was barely a glimmer in Nick Fury's eye. It was the year of Racefail, of DW and AO3 starting to take off, and looking back it really was around this time that I was most active in fandom. I miss it, and feel one million years old also.

So, I would love your recs! Vid must have been originally posted in 2009, but that's the only restriction. If you were vidding then, what's your favourite vid that you made that year? I'll be going through con premieres and LJ comm announcements etc, but recs for personal favourites very welcome.
Masterlist here.

I have three splendid vids made for me, I am so lucky! They're all super great. Thank you, secret festividders!

I have two for the 1996 Matilda film:

Jack the Giant Killer is a fantastically badass vid about Matilda using her powers to fuck shit up and fight against injustice.

Walking on Sunshine is an adorable vid about Matilda and Miss Honey that gives me MANY FEELINGS.

And then, beautifully, I have a vid for Pokémon GO! 500 Miles is a beautiful tribute to this weird and glorious phenomenon.
[personal profile] purplefringe made a vid about the Doctor Who Christmas specials, not quite in time for Christmas but in time for a burst of mid-January light. It gives me all the feelings in the whole world.

Halfway Out Of The Dark
Don't forget, I love, I love, I love you

It's like being wrapped up in a warm blanket for a few minutes, and I know I really needed that today.
Wow, I have barely updated since I started my new job. Turns out it's quite hard to get back into the swing of 9-5 after being out of work for two months, who knew.

I have managed to watch some of the great vids being posted recently though, so here have some recs.

MCU:
Zero by [personal profile] sweetestdrain (Natasha)
This is a brilliant look at Natasha over all the films so far, covering her central role in the story and how she's the one who assembled the Avengers.

1941 by [personal profile] rhoboat (Peggy)
Great song choice, great editing, great series overview. Peggy! \o/

I Lived by [personal profile] flummery (Steve/Peggy)
*ugly crying* their love is so tragic. sob. But really this is actually wonderfully optimistic in tone, because both of them are living the heck out of their lives even though they're apart. The bittersweet tinge is a punch in the gut though.

Korra, Sense8, Doctor Who, Mad Max: Fury Road

Landsailor by [personal profile] skygiants (Legend of Korra, Jinora)
A really beautiful overview of Jinora's arc and all the themes therein.

Breathe Me by [personal profile] butterfly (Sense8, ensemble)
Ahhhh my heart. I love this cluster so muuch, beloved darlings.

Survivor by [personal profile] odessie (Doctor Who, multi era)
This is the BEST. It is what my heart is made of. Companions having wonderful post-Doctor lives and being friends and being amazing. It's beautifully structured, every time a new character was introduced I shrieked a little bit.

Na Na Na by [personal profile] violace (Mad Max: Fury Road)
THIS IS SO AWESOME. Inspired song choice and a fantastic whirlwind ride through this film. I have watched it many times and I love it.

---

Today we got sent the draft script for our ceremony from the registrar, and it's my hen night this weekend, and our flat is covered in RSVP cards and robots and the constituent parts of centrepieces, all of which leads me to conclude that time has gone past inordinately quickly and I am in fact marrying [personal profile] happydork in two and a bit weeks.

Which is tremendously exciting, and also a little bit surreal. But then I sneak a peek at our wedding rings, or remember awesome little things we have planned for the day, and actually it's all totally great.

Also, this is late notice, but we haven't actually started putting together the decorations yet, and if you would like to contribute, you can decorate one of these awesome robots and send it to us, digitally or physically. If we have it on Friday 11th it'll go up in the hall, and if we have it this weekend it might also be included in something else we're planning. <3
I ran two vidshows at this year's Nine Worlds - a Star Trek show co-curated with [personal profile] usuallyhats, and the now-annual evening fanvid show on the fanfic track.

Thursday: Vid Long and Prosper - Laid-back Star Trek fanvid fun

Friday: Fanvid Showing - Amy returns with a roundup of the year’s fanvids

If you enjoyed watching those vidshows at the con, you might want to come along to Vidukon next summer! A cosy weekend convention in Cardiff where we sit and watch lots of vidshows interspersed with interesting panels and fannish hangouts. Lots of non-vidders attend, although some people do find themselves picking it up afterwards!
Had a wonderful time as always at Vidukon this year - so lovely to see lots of familiar faces and welcome some new people! You can check out pretty much the whole con on our website, with links to each vidshow and most of the vids shown.

Some personal favourites from premiering vids this year!

Republic City by [personal profile] beccatoria (Legend of Korra)
Never Look Away by [personal profile] frayadjacent (Buffy)
Weapon of Choice by [personal profile] usuallyhats (Multifandom - women made into weapons)
The One You Won't Forget by [personal profile] starlady (Agent Carter)
Walking 2 Hawaii by [personal profile] isagel (Guardians of the Galaxy)
Workin' It by [personal profile] brokenmnemonic (Magic Mike)

Also the premieres by [personal profile] silly_cleo and [personal profile] purplefringe, which are not yet up but hopefully will be soon!

Festivids!

such_heights: amy and rory looking at a pile of post (who: karen [light])
I have been rolling around in wonderful vids for the past few days, it's amazing.

First of all, I must heartily recommend the vids (4! 4 vids! I am spoiled rotten!) made for me:

Let's Get Mischievous (LEGO Marvel Superheroes)
This is so charming and fun. It focuses on the villains from the game, masterminded by Dr Doom, and they are goofy and fabulous. It's beautifully timed to a perfect song choice - pretty sure that 'I'm feeling devious, you're looking glamorous, let's get mischievous, and polyamorous' is my new life motto. If you've always wanted to see Mystique and Dr Doom and Loki and Dr Octopus team up in glorious LEGO format, now's your chance!

Beth Yw'r Haf I Mi (Maleficent)
Oh, my heart. This is really beautiful. I love the range of vids there are for Maleficent this year, from big and bombastic to this quiet, intimate look at Maleficent and Aurora and the parallels between them. <3

The Writer (Not Another Happy Ending)
So Not Another Happy Ending is a Scottish indie film that Karen Gillan did a couple of years ago. It's a fun enough film, but it is a bit marred by two pretty annoying love interests that take up a lot of screentime and are very boring. But! By far the best bit of the film is that as Gillan's character struggles with writing her next novel, she suddenly finds that her heroine has come to life and starting following her around. This vid is about that bit and is amazing. It uses all the loveliness of the Edinburgh setting and Karen Gillan's face to tell a gorgeous slightly fairytale story.

I Could Be (Selfie)
This is a vid about John Cho and Karen Gillan having stupid dorky beautiful faces at each other and is therefore PERFECT. There are also pratfalls and dramatic hair flips and amazing outfits and occasional FEELINGS and I love it to pieces.

Other vids I've enjoyed so far (still have lots to watch!):

Gone Tech (Almost Human) Karl Urban has a hot robot boyfriend
I am what I am and Kinky Neighbours (Batman 1966) - having just rewatched The Dark Knight over the weekend, these two were the most wonderfully kinky, fabulous anecdote.
Dynamite (Brooklyn Nine-Nine) Team feels and comedy hijinx, the perfect B99 vid. :D
Hard Way Home (Cloudburst) This vid about an ageing lesbian couple is funny and sweet and delightful and I must check out the film ASAP.
Silent Fandoms (Festivids) A fascinating, meta look at how and why we vid and our relationships with small fandoms.
Through the Deep, Dark Wood (How to Get Away With Murder) an intense, awesome look at Wes and Annalise.
All I Want (Life of Pi) Beautiful film, beautiful vid.
Shake It Off (Maleficent) Not at all what I was expecting for the collection of vids for this film, and I love it. The editing is really fun with all the zooms and jump cuts, too.
Afterlife (The Middleman) I need to watch this show already, it is known. In the meantime, all aboard the adorable Wendy/Lacey train.
Infinite (The Perks of Being A Wallflower) I haven't seen the film and I loved this vid. It doesn't let up in flow or emotion for over 5 minutes which I find very impressive.
I'll be there for you (Pit Bulls and Parolees) PUPPIES. *ugly crying*
Moves Like Yaweh (Prince of Egypt) Come for the amazing pun in the title, stay for the dynamic cutting of one of my favourite childhood films.
Grow Old With Me (Six Feet Under) Gorgeous ship vid for David and Keith.

I made three vids for this year's round. I don't feel like it's much of a giveaway to say that they're all about people with good faces who love each other. There may be a prize if you can guess all three!
I am super into [personal profile] thuviaptarth's latest vid right now.

Repetition
Summary: Engineering is a process of iterative development.

This is a really stylish, cool vid, with a great song choice and some fantastic editing, which is all the icing on a delicious cake of feels. It's about how Tony works and improves and tries and fails and tries again, both with the suits and with people - his relationships with Rhodey and Pepper are beautifully foregrounded, which delights me.

vidukon \o/!

So last weekend was Vidukon and it was really delightful. It was so nice to get the train with the London fangirl collective and see lots of familiar faces as well as meet some first time attendees like [profile] fray_adjacent and [personal profile] odessie.

Because Lithium Doll is some kind of wizard, you can enjoy the entire con from the comfort of your own home via the website, with links to the vids shown in each show, and notes up for some of the panels and even a video of Sunday's Year in Vidding panel that I ran.

Some personal favourite new-to-me vids over the weekend were:

Sexyback by [personal profile] odessie (Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries)

Goody Two Shoes by [personal profile] laurashapiro and [livejournal.com profile] pipsqueaky (due South)

Creating Something Beautiful by sinycatarina (Studio Ghibli)

Long Live by [personal profile] cosmic_llin (Star Trek) - I put the premieres show together so I knew this was going to be a hit, but seeing a lot of the room in tears as the lights came up was still quite something. I just, I have an awful lot of Star Trek feelings and this vid captures *all of them*, it's overwhelming. <333

The whole premieres show was really wonderful, a great range of sources and mood.

Other highlights included getting to watch the Aims Project all in order on the big screen, watching I Swear in a big group - the reactions of the people who know what's coming and the people who don't are equally priceless, and being happily encased in a bubble of vid squee for a whole weekend.

The vid show that I put together was Same Song, Different Source. I wasn't sure how this was going to play out - would people find it repetitive? Did it invite people to put the vids in competition? But it seemed to go down well, and interestingly multiple people said that it enhanced the way that they read and understood vids, particularly the second vids in the pairs. So that was really cool.

I'm delighted that all of us in the concom are keen to keep running this every year now, and also figure out how to expand it a little so that we can afford to sustain and grow what we can do. Vids! Con! Whee! \o/
It was my birthday on Wednesday! Thank you everyone who left well wishes for me on various corners of the internet. <3

[personal profile] purplefringe made me the most epic Captain America vid of all time. It's to Don't Stop Believin', it's Steve/Sam, it's all my hopes and dreams in fanvid form. :D :D :D :D

And [personal profile] raven wrote me a wonderful DS9 Kira/Dax story, Signal Fire, which is beautiful and gave me many feelings.

Also [personal profile] happydork has taken up knitting and is filling our home with joy. There's a TARDIS all for me and a Jaegar so far.
The show I'm putting together for Vidukon this year is called Same Song, Different Source, which is just what it sounds like. I want take a look at the different ways vidders use the same audio to different effects and how different the tone of a vid can be based on editing choices/lyric interpretation etc.

This is a harder one that usual to solicit recs for, but I thought I'd give it a go! I'd love recs for pairs of vids that use the same song (can definitely be different covers/instrumental version etc) where there's some kind of interesting contrast, whether in the source, the mood, the interpretation of the lyrics, etc. Alternatively, recs for single vids that use a song in an unusual way could be helpful, if it's likely the song has been vidded multiple times.

The more the merrier, so any ideas that spring to mind, I'd love to hear them! Thanks!

(I'm just going to go back to having a crisis over how to pick only two Handlebars vids.)
Wheeeee, another vid in the Aims vidding project has gone up!

[personal profile] purplefringe has made Never Look Away (Doctor Who, Eleven & Clara)

It's so perfect and beautiful. I think [personal profile] purplefringe has really outdone herself on this one - there's so much packed into every moment, lots of layers of narrative and symbolism and also their precious faces. It gives me MANY FEELINGS and it's really really pretty too.

I'm so so pleased with all of the Aims - they're all brilliant, and have a lovely range of sources, themes, and interpretations of the songs, plus a lot of focus on women. Just two more to go now! We're hoping to be able to show all of them as a Vidukon vid show which would be pretty awesome.

Speaking of - Vidukon! Is a thing, happening in Cardiff at the end of June, and if you like watching and talking about vids and can get yourself there you should definitely come. Create an account on the website to register, and even if you don't want to register just yet you can join in discussion about possible panel topics etc.

We'll also be accepting premieres whether you're attending the con or not (deadline: April 27th).

In additional con news, I'm going to doing some vidding content on the fanworks track at Nine Worlds this year, and am also chatting to some of the people at Worldcon about doing something similar with them as they're trying to get fanworks involved. So if you're doing the London con circuit this summer, come and watch some vids with me!
So, um, I received five festivids this year? And they are all totally amazing and wonderful and I love them so much. Also I am doing the aw shucks foot scuff thing a lot because wow, that's a lot of vid! <3333

They are all flat out brilliant. Let me tell you about them.

9 to 5 (Lego Star Wars)
It's a tough life for a stormtrooper.

I laugh hysterically every time I watch this. It's a totally genius idea for a start - poor downtrodden stormtroopers! Their lives are hard! And it's brilliantly executed, so many hilarious lyric matches and a wonderful build until I hurt laughing by the end.

I Am The Rain (Brave)
There are those who say fate is something beyond our command. That destiny is not our own, but I know better. Our fate lives within us. You only have to be brave enough to see it.

Eeee, Merida! This is a wonderful character study that ties Merida's journey into the larger mythology of Brave's world and does some lovely intercutting between her and her mother at different ages. It's a gorgeous song choice, too, really atmospheric and fits the tone of the source wonderfully.

Learn To Fly (Brave)
Take these broken wings and learn to fly.

This is a fantastic vid about Merida and Eleanor - I love the fact it's set to a song in Gaelic, and it gives me all the warm squishy feelings about this gorgeous mother daughter relationship. It makes the plot of the film really pop out and feel fresh and wonderful all over again.

King and Lionheart (Pacific Rim)
A vid about Mako, her relationships with Stacker and Raleigh, and also her face.

So I didn't actually put specific songs in my request but as it happened I've really wanted a Mako and Stacker vid to this song for ages! And oh this is perfect. They're both so brave and beautiful and love each other so muuuuuch. *sob* This is one of those vids that completely captures the source the way I see it, and it's so beautifully edited too.

Soon Love Soon (Cloud Atlas)
We will know that to be a part is to be truly whole.

The person who made this vid plays DIRTY, man. Cloud Atlas was quite a formative book for me when it came out, and the film tapped into that in a big way. This vid captures all the things I love best about the story and then sets it to Vienna Teng, so obviously makes me cry and cry. In a great way! I just have all these feelings about all these characters! I love the way this vid draws out so many parallels between the different stories, and there are several moments that take my breath away.

In short, all highly recommended! Do give the vidders some love if you enjoyed any of these.

I made two vids for festivids this year, if anyone has any guesses. I can offer no prize but the vindication of being right!
We have started posting over at [community profile] eleventyfest! Follow along for two weeks of Doctor Who Eleven-era fanworks. We have started with:

VID: You're No God (Eleven/River) and FIC: Of Time And Space (Amy/Rory, Eleven/River, Eleven/Amy).

\o/ Running fests is the best way to get a bunch of people to make stuff relevant to your interests.

Also, hi internet! August was busy but I'm back now! I only just realised how little I posted over the last month, but with the nights drawing in I suspect I'll be back to old habits soon.

VID: People Get Ready by [personal profile] kaydeefalls (Doctor Who, Amy/Rory, Eleven, River)

Lots of different fancastings for different people who could play a Mary Morstan equivalent for Joan. I CHOOSE ALL OPTIONS OMG.

♥♥♥

(PS [personal profile] purplefringe made me an Elementary vid but it's not online yet. I WILL LET YOU KNOW WHEN IT IS BECAUSE IT'S BEAUTIFUL.)

Okay, I'm going to try and post this, and then some notes from my panel, and then maybe a con report if I get time?! But ahhh I need to pack for Wiscon, two cons on two continents in two weeks seemed like such a good idea at the time.

Anyway! Playlists under the cut for the three shows I helped put together at this year's Vidukon: Sweet Dreams, Go Team!, and Festivids.

Sweet Dreams )

Go Team! )

Festivids )
BEST DAY OF THE YEAR TBH.

192 vids are here for your perusal in loads of different rare fandoms and omgggg what glorious bounty I'm so excited.

And the magic of festivids has brought me three whole vids, eee! They are all wonderful - festivdders, THANK YOU! You collectively made me shriek and beam until my face hurt and then I fell over onto [personal profile] purplefringe, so, you know, good haul.

THEY ARE *drumroll*

Just A Girl (Discworld, Susan)

Come And Find Me (Imagine Me & You)

I've Just Seen A Face (We'll Take Manhattan)

They're all amazing, lovely vids about awesome women with REALLY GOOD FACES, from the badass Susan Sto Helit to the adorableface Luce/Rachel to Karen Gillan's Jean Shrimpton sixties biopic and I LOVE THEM A LOT.
