So it occurs to me it's once again time to ramp up for the Female Character Trope Fest, in which we delight in the fannish catnip of tropes like high school AUs and bodyswap and sex pollen, centred around women and relationships between women.

How would people like it to run this year? Prompt post and fanworks post like in the past? Kink meme style? General flash fanwork challenge with less emphasis on individual prompts? Let me know!

The female character trope fest is now open for fills! Here is a giant list of prompts in fandoms from A Song of Ice and Fire to Yuu Yuu Hakusho. Rules and guidelines here.

+ If you've been meaning to leave trope fest prompts, now is the time! I'll put up a post with all the prompts in the morning and the fest will be open for fills. There are currently over 600 hundred prompts in well over 100 fandoms. \o/

It's three weeks for Dreamwidth time again, which has crept up somewhat. That means it's time to run the Trope Fest again, yay!

As this came up a few times last time, from TV Tropes (warning: horrifically addicting website), this is what a trope is:

Tropes are devices and conventions that a writer can reasonably rely on as being present in the audience members' minds and expectations. On the whole, tropes are not clichés. The word clichéd means "stereotyped and trite." In other words, dull and uninteresting. We are not looking for dull and uninteresting entries. We are here to recognize tropes and play with them, not to make fun of them.

Here are the rules, slightly modified from last year:

1. This a fest that hopes to encourage more fanworks about relationships between female characters, both gen and femslash. The term 'female character' should be understood to include all characters that canonically identify as or present as women or girls some or all of the time. I trust your judgement!

2. All fanworks are allowed. This includes but is not limited to art, vids, fic, podfic, graphics, crafts, filks, rec lists, meta and picspam. Fanworks can be posted as comments or posted to your own journal/webspace and left as a link. Fanworks can be made as a response to a specific prompt or simply featuring any of the tropes listed below, and you’re welcome to create things for your own prompts.

3. Please include the following information in some format when posting:

4. Timeline:

Friday 27th April (now): Post opens for prompts.

5. Prompting: please format your prompts as 'fandom, characters/ship, prompt'. Examples:

'Any fandom, any queer female character, undercover straight'
'Community, Annie/Britta, strip poker'
'The Good Wife/White Collar, Kalinda and Diana (gen or slash), stuck in a lift'
'Legend of Korra, Korra and Lin, bodyswap'

You can leave as many prompts as you want per comment, and feel free to edit, though once I start collating prompts on Tuesday I can't guarantee your edits will make the list. Please also be considerate when prompting for currently airing canon and avoid major spoilers.

So! We had twenty-three fanworks in the first three weeks or so of the challenge, which is completely awesome.

If you have an AO3 account and would like to/already have posted your story over there, I've created an AO3 collection.

Both the AO3 collection and the masterlist post on my journal will stay open/updated indefinitely, because look at all the awesome prompts there are! My own original idea for this challenge has ... grown, somewhat, so I'm going to see if I can rattle off something smaller this week.

+ Fills are starting to come in at the trope fest! There are stories for SGA, Doctor Who, Leverage, Black Swan and Hawaii Five-0 so far. Lots more to come, I hope! I assume we've been off to a relatively slow start because everyone is working on EPIC MASTERPIECES, right? *g*

+ So I am now thinking about what I would like to do for this Dreamwidth party! Aside from making some things for the trope fest, as soon as I can decide between all the amazing prompts.

There are lots of things I could potentially do! There's a femslash mini meta thing going on at fem_thoughts which is super cool, but none of the prompts there have spoken to me yet. So I could write some fannish meta or maybe make some picspams or themed rec lists or something. Or if you have any non-fannish topics or questions I could do that, idk if anyone has burning questions about anything I know anything about or have experience of, but I am open to your suggestions!

I'll be away until Monday with limited internet access, so a few quick hits before I go:

+ OH HEY, THAT SHOW WHAT I LIKE IS BACK ON IN TWO DAYS. I MIGHT BE A BIT EXCITED. Doctors and Ponds! Time and space! All my favourite things. a;sdkljs \o/

+ Female character trope fest continues to go super well! Some updates on that front: a magical team of elves is currently coding and updating a big prompt masterlist. Majority opinion wanted a new post for prompt fills. Therefore, on Monday when I get some time online - mid-morning to early afternoon UK time, I expect - I will close the prompts post, put up a new post with a link to all the prompts, and the fanwork extravaganza may begin. Thanks to everyone who's left prompts, linked it around and otherwise expressed their enthusiasm/support - this has gone from a cheap ploy to make people write some fic for me to something much cooler, and I'm excited that so many of you are excited.

+ And now back to packing and writing my Remix pinch-hit.

+ Over at wiscon_vidparty I am hosting a discussion for anyone trying to/planning on submitting a premiere for Wiscon (myself included, oh dear /o\).

+ The response to the female character trope fest has been fabulous so far, thank you all very much! We are onto ten pages of prompts in under 24 hours, good grief. fly_to_dawn is my hero for coding up the first nine of those pages. Depending on how things are shaping up by Thursday or Friday, may need to slightly rethink structure in order to minimise unwieldiness.
