Two days in, and we have what I think can technically be termed a ton of prompts. Which is awesome!

Given we're now onto 17 pages of comments, a question - would you prefer to keep fills in the same post next week, kinkmeme style, or have a new post, porn battle style?

This is kind of unrelated, but something I've been wondering for a while, and this just popped up on my flist and reminded me... what is a trope? I've never heard it used or discussed away from the internet, and I'm confused - I've never heard it used in a positive context, but from what I can gather it's not interchangeable with 'cliche' AND for some completely unknown reason, I always prickle slightly when I hear the word 'trope' and I can't work out why, because I don't know what it means!!

Huh! I agree I hear it mostly on the internet, but I've never had negative associations with it. I'd roughly define it as the collection of themes, plot devices and motifs that writers frequently use in different genres, e.g. it's a sci-fi trope to meet an alien race whose society reflects in some way on our own, or it's a rom-com trope to have the lead character embarrass themselves in front of a date, etc. And while a trope could be clichéd, it doesn't have to be, if that makes sense.

TV Tropes - which, warning, is a horrible time-suck of a website - has a page on it here.

Within the context of this fest, I mean it in the sense of popular conceits and devices fandom uses in its fic, art and so on. Sometimes they're cheesy, sometimes they're kind of questionable, but I think they're all a lot of fun when done well.

And just to keep the point going, it took me years to understand that "conceit" used in this context is not a condemnation in the same way as calling someone conceited is.

How about "not actually sure what you mean by fills or kinkmeme/porn battle style"? Is that posting short fics as replies to the original comment, or in a separate post thus omitting prompts not taken up?

Ah, apologies! So, if everything's in the same post, you would either post something as a reply to a specific comment or as a more general piece as a new top-level comment - if I make a new post, each fanwork will be a top-level comment, referencing the specific prompt it's filling if applicable. I've seen both formats work well before.

Got it. New post sounds better then, on the grounds of it being too easy to get lost among 15 or so pages of comments.
