Tell me you want to play and I'll pick up to three of your fandoms. Then update your journal and answer the following questions:

[personal profile] laurashapiro gave me Doctor Who, BSG & Fringe.

Doctor Who

What got you into this fandom in the first place?

Sat down to watch 'Rose' the night it aired; love at first sight. Then I started getting internet-fannish about it around s3, which is also the time my friends were enabling me into the Classic series, the Big Finish audios, etc etc. I now have books, audio CDs, DVDs, soundtracks, posters, action figures, multiple autographed things and various other bits and pieces of merchandise including a pop-up Weeping Angel because my dad thought it was funny. *fist shake*

Do you think you'll stay in this fandom or eventually move on?

It's hard for me to imagine not loving the show - I've certainly had periods of going off it before, see the year of specials and manpain, but I always come back again. It could happen, of course, but I hope it doesn't. Whether it'll remain my primary online fandom post-Ponds remains to be seen. I may jump on board writing fic about the new companion, or I may end up hunkering down in my corner making things about Amy and Rory way past the point where most people care, or I might spend more time somewhere else. Who knows! But I would be kind of excited to *not* break up with my major fandom for once, that would be super.

Favorite episodes/books/movies, etc?

Eesh.
-- Classic series: City of Death, Five Doctors, Battlefield.
-- Big Finish audios: The Church and the Crown, The Kingmaker, The Time of the Daleks (DALEKS QUOTING SHAKESPEARE YOU GUYS, IT'S AMAZING) the Zagreus series.
-- New series: The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances, Smith and Jones, Blink, Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead, Vincent and the Doctor, The Pandorica Opens/The Big Bang, The Doctor's Wife.

... what! It's a big canon!

Do you participate in this fandom (fanfiction, graphics, discussions)?

Hahaha just a bit. Fic, vids, podfic, graphics, meta, I mod some comms, I cosplay - yeah.

Do you think more people should get into this fandom?

Well, the more the merrier, obviously! Especially if you want to make Ponds fanworks for me to squee over. :D But it's a big enough thing that I feel like everyone knows about it and if you want to watch it, you're watching it. *non-committal hands* I rarely get preachy about my shows because they're often so big already. The two box sets I tend to thrust at people are Avatar: the Last Airbender and Sarah Connor Chronicles, because they're kind of perfect. Everything else I love, well, if you love it too then that's awesome, if not, that's fine!

Battlestar Galactica

What got you into this fandom in the first place?

A bunch of people on my flist were watching it, and I had essay deadlines. (This is how I mainlined a lot of my TV during uni.) I caught up right before the finale aired.

Do you think you'll stay in this fandom or eventually move on?

I'm not sure I would ever consider myself as having been in the fandom as such - I've vidded it, and watched a lot of other vids for it, but I never really got immersed in it or read a lot of fic anything.

Favorite episodes/books/movies, etc?

Downloaded. Boomer/Caprica = robot revolutionary OTP. Also the whole New Caprica arc. Those were the days.

Do you participate in this fandom (fanfiction, graphics, discussions)?

Not really - I have made a vid, and have another one I might make sometime. It's a suuuuper depressing one about Dee and Gaeta, though, and I want to exist but I'm not sure I have the heart to make it. Maybe I should buy someone in an auction sometime and make them do it for me.

Do you think more people should get into this fandom?

BSG is one of those shows that was really, really awesome for me for a long time and then made me sad and angry, so I wouldn't recommend the show unconditionally to anyone. Also it's very dark and violent even when it's good so it's certainly not for everyone.

Fringe

What got you into this fandom in the first place?

Everyone was talking about this Olivia Dunham person and she sounded pretty fabulous! I started watching it, and everyone was right.

Do you think you'll stay in this fandom or eventually move on?

I don't think Fringe is ever going to be a major fandom for me - I'm working on a vid right now and I do have some fic ideas, but it doesn't quite hit my 'must make all the fanworks' buttons.

Favorite episodes/books/movies, etc?

Bound, Ability, Jacksonville, Brown Betty, Over There, Olivia, The Abducted, Making Angels.

Do you participate in this fandom (fanfiction, graphics, discussions)?

I don't really feel like I'm 'in a fandom' until I'm subscribing to communities/hunting for fic etc, so Fringe is more a show that I watch and talk about with my friends and also am making some things for. I do have a lot of flaily squee for Olivia and Astrid in particular, though. <3333

Do you think more people should get into this fandom?

Given that this season has not really been keeping my interest, let me see how the finale plays out and I'll get back to you on that one. The Olivia Dunham Show is amazing, however, when the show remembers that's what it is. Beware a distressing amount of body horror, though! (I keep forgetting that I should never watch Fringe with food in case it's a gross-out episode. D:)

So, alas, there was no internet on the bus for me! And then I was distracted by going and having dim sum with [personal profile] magnetic_pole and her partner, and now I am at [livejournal.com profile] midnitemaraud_r's place, yay. But I did write some lists, so here's a batch:

quickly on BSG and gender, with spoilers for the whole series )

+ Relatedly, this post on queer subtext hit me -right here-. Because yes. We have so, so little positive representation in both mainstream and genre TV, and it makes such a difference. All I want are characters who are like me and alive and get to be happy, and -- well, that's not been the case for a while. I am thus both cautiously optimistic and VERY NERVOUS about Skins S4. *clings to Naomi & Emily* I am also looking forward to the new BBC drama, Lip Service, which is about 20-something lesbians in Glasgow. *crosses fingers* (And AfterEllen's article on it made me laugh - oh, The L Word. I loved you, and am still fond of your early seasons, but really.

+ blog carnival: Disability Blog Carnival #63: Relationships (February 2010 edition) is being hosted by [personal profile] avendya at [community profile] disability, with submissions due by February 20th. \o/
[personal profile] oxoniensis is hosting an impromptu 'make it better' challenge! Aw, clearly this is a great idea! Take A Sad Song And Make It Better, for giving canonically roughed-up characters a little TLC.

I have committed a little post-finale BSG ficlet to contribute to the festivities:
Brighter Lights
Laura, Kara ; PG ; 300 words ; spoilers for the finale
I keep trying to write a post about Battlestar Galactica, because I want to talk about it, and how it pains me tremendously but also I can't let it go. I'm trying to work how best to explain the former, and I'm still not sure why the latter is the case. All I can really tell you is that I'm clipping episodes for vidding and I keep crying at random screenshots of characters giving DRADIS readings and other such mundane moments. :/

ANYWAY. Let us move to happier subjects! Hi guys, I'm super excited that there are so many people coming over to Dreamwidth right now. I'm enjoying watching all of this unfold. And while I still don't know where I see myself based long-term, it was nice to have this place as a reassuring background presence when I read things like this. An anti-gay marriage ad has surfaced on the rota of LJ's ads -- Marta, one of the LiveJournal staffers, is to be very much commended for jumping in quickly and directly and sorting it out, but it highlights a basic problem that LJ don't have all that much control, apparently, over the content of their ads. It gives a certain extra bigotry-flavoured spice to checking your flist in the morning, you know?

Okay, that wasn't especially happy either. Take three! I thought maybe I would post some sort of introductory-type thing for anyone that's new around here.

ten things about me )

If you would like to introduce yourself here, please do!
I'm a couple of days late, but I wanted to wish a really happy birthday to the ever-lovely [livejournal.com profile] sambethe, I hope you had a fantastic day! If you'd like to drop me a prompt, I'd love to write something for you. ♥

---

Related, in a way, because I'm excited about getting caught up enough to talk to you all about this: I have been watching lots of Battlestar Galactica. I feel like it's taken me a long time to really get into it, but I got 100% sold towards the end of season two and now I am racing through series three whenever I have time.

sporadic spoilers through the whole series )

Talk BSG to me, guys! I think I've actually spoiled myself for most major plot points to date, but let's not put that to the test, shall we? I've watched through 3x16. Also, what I'd really love are vid recs if you had any to share [again, spoiler notes would be appreciated!] - I've been watching [livejournal.com profile] hollywoodgrrl's stuff and [livejournal.com profile] dualbunny's Kara vids, but I sense there would be an awful lot of good work out there!

AUs

(Things I will some day post about: how Psych is my new happy place by featuring adorable girl geeks and boy geeks and hitting me in all the best friend OTP shippy places I did not know I had missed. Also, I have reached the end of Series 2 of Battlestar Galactica and I think als;dkj frak me is really all I've got until I've watched 3x01 at least.)

Today, let us talk about AU fic. By which I don't mean the canon AU variety -- what if Sirius didn't go to Azkaban, what if Romana survived the Time War -- but rather the sorts of AUs where John is a rainbow or Rodney is an android or Gwen's the lead singer for the Europop disco band Torchwood* or Dean's a spaceship mechanic or Arthur's the Prince of Wales.

*admittedly that one only exists in my head, though the rest are real stories. But seriously, Torchwood the trashy synthesiser band! There's nothing not to love about that. Somebody should write it for me.

See, these latter sorts of AUs aren't especially ones I'm used to, because they don't exist very much in Doctor Who or Harry Potter, though I can think of a few Remus/Sirius non-magical AUs in this vein. I think that different canons give rise to hugely different amounts of these sorts of stories - the best example is probably the fact there are tons and tons of Supernatural RPS AUs, but far fewer AU stories involving the canon characters. Jared and Jensen are essentially themselves in a whole variety of situations that would be fun to read about, and the same goes for the SGA team or the members of any of the bandom bands. On the other hand, it seems like the Doctor isn't really the Doctor if he doesn't have the TARDIS, that Harry Potter isn't really himself if he's not a wizard. The canon universe plays a much more central role in some fandoms than it does in others.

Personally, I particularly like AUs in RPF fandoms because it adds an additional degree of fictionalisation that makes it easier for me to read, and I can't not love all of the SGA AUs, which between them offer everything you could possibly wish for.

As you may have guessed, this post was inspired in part by [livejournal.com profile] rageprufrock's Drastically Redefining Protocol [Merlin; Merlin/Arthur; NC-17; ~46K]. Because, okay, I'd put Merlin firmly in the category where I wasn't especially interested in non-canon AUs, particularly modern day ones. And then I realised that here we have a story that makes me infinitely happy on two levels - first, Arthur is still a bit of a royal prat, Merlin is still a bit magic, Morgana is still a bit prophetic, Gwen is still a lot awesome. Second, if there were a young and famously handsome Prince of Wales in the UK right now who became openly in a gay relationship? This is exactly how it would go, down to the last ONTD screencap, and the verisimilitude is almost alarming at times. Forget the fact I would so, so happily read original fiction on just this premise if it was done this well, it was a sad moment after I finished the story and realised it didn't actually happen.

So you should go read that, it's wonderful. You should also talk to me about the AU scenarios you like and don't like, what you think these things need to work. I may or may not be considering going AU for [livejournal.com profile] thelittlebang, you see. Which, knowing me, will probably involve a) space, b) robots, c) an apocalypse of some description, or d) a combination of the above.

... Yeah, I've really got to wonder how I managed not to watch BSG for so long.
