Here is a reclist of the year, of sorts. Below are a selection of fanworks that made me laugh, cry, flail, think, ache, rejoice and love over the course of the year. Below are romances, character studies, sweeping epics, AUs, meta, dance numbers, transitions, friendships, monsters, politics, zombies, and of course, robots. (There are always robots.)

Some of them are very famous, some only have a handful of comments. I love them all, because they all define what the past year in fandom was for me. There are a dozen fandoms represented here, and hopefully there's something for everyone. It's also worth noting that this list is defined by what's not included almost as much as what is - there were so many things I couldn't fit in! A lot of the time, I just couldn't pick only one story by a favourite author to include. (In one case, a certain author's best story is still sitting on my hard drive waiting for me to finish my beta.) My point is, this is in no way definitive, or even really a 'best of'. Just, here are some stories and some vids that I liked. Enjoy!

20 stories! )

13 vids! )

Thank you to all the authors, vidders, beta readers and cheerleaders that made the above possible, and here's to the stories to come in 2010. ♥
+ Thing one, recs!

Graduate Vulcan for Fun and Profit by [livejournal.com profile] lazulisong (Star Trek Reboot, Kirk gen)

I suspect this has been linked all over the place, but it's just the most brilliant Reboot fic I've read in some time. It made me tear up, it made me think, it made me laugh like a drain. LOVE.

Vid insta-rec: Imma Be by [livejournal.com profile] talitha78 (Leverage, Hardison, Parker, Eliot)

This is bouncy and completely charming, and if [livejournal.com profile] talitha78 wants to keep vidding all of my OT3s, that would be fine.

+ Thing two, there is a send postcards to Katie and Angel project! I very much approve.

+ Thing three, there's this show that I love. It's about a young man who discovers he has a magic destiny, a woman with really good hair and magical powers-- and no, it's not Merlin. I have fallen into the sweet, sweet embrace of Legend of the Seeker, and I'm kind of startled by how much I love it. I'd write a pimping post, but ignipes made the most epic and hilarious post ever about why you should watch it (featuring chickens! magical red dildos! Richard's adorable face! Kahlan's badassery!)

What I would say is, you have to have a healthy appreciation of often-cheesy high fantasy (and I love that shit, so I'm golden). But once you get into it the plot arc is compelling - indeed, each episode has consequences for the plot and the characters, shocking! - the leads are all great, and there's a whole host of fabulous guest stars. A lot of women being kickass in very different ways, a reasonable amount of variation on villain-of-the-week, and there are even some characters who aren't white and don't die! I think it is especially soothing for me right now because it deftly avoids all the things that are irritating me with Merlin.

Also, KAHLAN > EVERYONE.

+ Thing four, I have Google Wave invites! If anyone wants one, drop a comment or an email (such.heights at gmail dot com) with your email address.

Ahahahaha, oh man. I need to stop this unscheduled three hours napping! I will be awake half the night catching up on all the laundry and email-answering and homework I should have done at a sensible hour. *facepalm*

Further reading for Coming Out Day:
There's no big moment where you scream "By all the gods on Olympus, I'm queer!" or something to that effect, and the whole world hears it and treats you accordingly. Every person you meet is someone else who has absolutely no idea, unless you meet them in the context of being queer in some way. People make assumptions, and coming out is jut as much about correcting assumptions as it is about expressing yourself.

-- National Coming Out Day, [personal profile] iambickilometer

here's my deal: I don't believe in coming out. I don't believe that I should have to. I hate the idea that queerness has to be announced - and therefore that heteronormativity is assumed/default. I hate the idea that being any kind of queer is like giving someone a surprise party, where you jump up out of a darkened space and then they say, wow, I didn't expect that! I hate it. I like to say: I don't believe in coming out - I believe in being out.

Recs:

those isles of yours that wait for me by [livejournal.com profile] siriaeve [SGA/Firefly fusion, Teyla/Zoe, PG-13]

The world is now a better place because this pairing exists, for real.

Club Wales by [livejournal.com profile] pocky_slash [Torchwood, Ianto, Gwen, PG-13]

This is long (19k!) and absolutely wonderful. I fell in love with the characters all over again and it's a beautiful look at Gwen and Ianto's friendship.

How Ianto Jones Quits His Job and Decides to Take Over the World (Without the Help of a Kangaroo Army) by [livejournal.com profile] sparky77 [Torchwood/SPN/Leverage, Dean/Alec/Ianto and combinations, PG]

The crack is strong with this one! It's glorious.

We are laying down some anon love? I'm down with that.

I'm SO WIRED, you guys. I will never sleep again! :D :D :D

VVC recs!

\o/ There are some VVC vids posted already! (Fair warning: I will probably do nothing but spam you all with vid recs this week. It's going to be great.)

Start the Commotion by [livejournal.com profile] danegen [Leverage]

I have been wanting to rec this vid for such a long time! It's a great encapsulation of everything I love about Leverage. Hardison is awesome! Parker and Eliot both agree! So should you. :D

You Shook Me All Night Long by [livejournal.com profile] mresundance [multi-fandom]

This is a celebration of women vidders and women in vids and it's delightful. So many of my favourites! Also, yes, that is my vid in there, nestled in alongside some very excellent company.

Thriller by [livejournal.com profile] buffyann [Supernatural/Buffy]

The movement and the musicality of this is just amazing - it's exciting and scary and highly amusing in parts. Who knew these shows looked quite this similar?

Bachelorette by [livejournal.com profile] obsessive24 [Buffy]

More seasoned Buffy viewers than I will get much more out of this, I'm sure, but I can tell you that this is thought-provoking, well-argued and beautiful to watch.

Seven Nation Army by [livejournal.com profile] charmax [multi-fandom]

My reaction to this can probably be summed up as 'eee charmax vidded robots again!' But really it's cleverer than that - it's fun and bouncy and must have been great fun to dance to at Club Vivid, but it's also smart and does lots of interesting things with the different sources (which are lots of my favourite robot shows/films).
Yeah, I think I'm just going to spam you all with other people's awesome fic this week, as that's how I'm procrastinating on my own submissions. Cool? Cool.

Doctor Who:
The Kleptomaniac Time Traveller's Club, by [livejournal.com profile] netgirl_y2k [Romana, Christina, G]
“A quick word of advice, if you ever find yourself travelling the universe with a kleptomaniac keep a close eye on any valuables.”

There's nothing in that header that is not fantastic, am I right? This is so much fun, and as I said to [livejournal.com profile] netgirl_y2k, a spin-off I totally want to watch.

A couple of things from [livejournal.com profile] lgbtfest:

Harry Potter:
Live Every Day, by [personal profile] mindabbles. [Alice/various, R]
There are all kinds of families. She knows that better than most. Sometimes it is love that ties them together, and sometimes it's comfort or needing each other. Sometimes it's music and stories shared around a fire.

I want to say all sorts of intelligent things about this story, but I haven't quite found the words yet. It's gorgeous, and a brilliant example of something that's completely canon-compliant but doesn't fit the standard backstory we assign these characters.

*

Leverage:
The Epiphany Job, by [livejournal.com profile] shrift. [Alec/Eliot, PG-13]
"When he rolled out of bed that afternoon, heated up some Philly Steak & Cheese Hot Pockets for breakfast, and then went to the office, Alec Hardison was not expecting to experience a paradigm shift."

The characterisation in this makes me wriggle with glee. \o/

*

You know, I'm pretty sure I had no intention whatsoever of getting into another fandom. I mean, I watched Leverage and loved it and everything, but the fic just had to go and be amazing, didn't it? Sigh. My life, so hard. *g*

(On that note - guys, seriously, watch Leverage. It's about hot thieves who steal things for Great Justice and it has teeeeam and multi-shipping and I am so in love with Parker and Eliot and Alec I can't even tell you.)

*

Moar Leverage recs:

Faint Heart Never Won Fair Lady, by [livejournal.com profile] hackthis. [Parker/Maggie, Alec/Eliot, PG-13]
"I called her on her cell phone and said I thought her hair was shiny, and she smelled nice, and did she want to have dinner sometime?"

Working Without a Net, by [livejournal.com profile] facetofcathy>. [Alec/Eliot, Adult]
When they're not off on a job, Eliot and Parker drop by a lot, and by some secret code or psychic connection or the alignment of the stars, usually at about the same time.

The Way to a Man's Heart, by [livejournal.com profile] merle_p. [Alec/Eliot, R]
(or: Five times Eliot Spencer cooked for Alec Hardison)

Courtship, by [livejournal.com profile] with_a_kay [Alec/Parker, PG]
He brings her flowers. No boy has ever brought her flowers before.

It's All So Clear to Me Now, by [livejournal.com profile] fools_game. [Alec/Eliot, Nate/Sophie, PG]
Parker sees more than some people think.

I need a Leverage icon. Non-Dreamwidth related, that is, although that set by [personal profile] thedivinegoat is made of awesome.
