I haven't recced anything since *June* what is going on. A selection of Doctor Who things I've enjoyed lately:

VID: The Future by bradcpu (Daleks, Oswin)
I'm useless but not for long.

In what is an incredibly slick and thoughtful vid, perhaps the biggest achievement of this vid, to me, is that it makes 'Daleks in Manhattan/Evolution of the Daleks' look like good episodes. Outstanding.

Familiar Grounds by pocketmouse (Amy/Eleven/Rory)
Someone has been giving the people on Geros IV a leg up into the Iron Age. The answer seems simple at first, but quickly turns complicated, between raiding tribes, a greedy interstellar regime, and the Doctor's plans never quite going according to ...plan.

pocketmouse's plotty OT3 fics always delight me, and this one is gorgeous - full of fun tropes like huddling for warmth and accidental marriage, and lots of lovely character interaction.

Phase by parachute_silks
"The first boy I fancied was called Rory. Actually, she was called Nina. I was going through a Phase."

If, like me, the above line grated in the episode, then you'll appreciate this fic, which takes the concept and runs with it in an awesome queer sci-fi backstory way.

A Disordered World by strix_alba (Doctor Who/Sherlock, Molly & Martha)
Nearly a year after the invasion, Molly wakes up, not to the shrieking of the Toclafane, but to a rap on the front door.

I don't read much Sherlock fic, but Molly in the Year That Never Was? Sign me up! It's a great concept and the story completely delivers - Molly's characterisation is wonderful, and I loved seeing Martha through her eyes. And the story may be gen, but I definitely ship it.

And the last one is an excellent story by lizbee that is spoilery for the finale so I'll put it behind a cut.

So another batch of my friends have got into Avatar TLA lately which is always a source of enormous joy. And now that Korra has finally started, eeeeee, I'm hoping this fandom will only continue to grow!

(People who still haven't seen this show, I really can't recommend it enough. It's just. So good. Hilarious and compelling and full of heart with fantastic characters from the main team to recurring to standalone, and it fulfils so many of my hopes and dreams re. representation, with an entirely Asian culture-based fantasy world, a huge range of different kinds of female characters as well as one of my favourite disabled characters ever, and it's all about a team of adorable dorks who love each other and save the day and a;lsdasja;lskd. It makes me so, so happy in my heart.)

This list has been written for people who've caught up on the show, so assume spoilers for everything including aired episodes of Korra.

So on Dreamwidth I co-mod white_lotus, which runs a yearly fanwork exchange as well as being a general repository for fanwork posts and news about the show. Now that Korra's airing we're having weekly discussion posts. The quality of the things people post there is so high, there's so much good stuff and it's a great place to go and find icons etc. That's how I saw a fantastic and comprehensive batch for the first two episodes of Korra by piconz, for instance.

Fanwork recs - I have some delicious bookmarks and this is the recs tag on my journal.

+ At white_lotus we've started posting fanworks for the Lunar New Year exchange - so far there are two fics, one about Ursa and one Katara/Zuko, and a vid about Toph & Azula. All highly recommended!

+ FESTIVIIIIIDS! I got a wonderful vid, Baby Got Going (Bridesmaids), which I looove and need to praise the vidder in much detail about why it's great, but have yet to find the right words. Basically it captures all the stuff I love best about the film (female friendships! ridiculous faces! hilarity!) and is really well-edited with some great timing and eeee. :D I shall have some more festivids recs later when I've had a chance to watch a few more. (I'm putting off some that look wonderful because they'll probably make me cry - so tomorrow when I'm home alone, then!)

+ Here in the UK it is the National Television Awards tonight (decided by public vote), and Matt Smith and Karen Gillan have picked up Best Drama Performance awards, hurray!

+ Speaking of Karen Gillan, her biopic about Jean Shrimpton, We'll Take Manhattan, is airing on BBC Four tomorrow evening and will presumably be on iPlayer thereafter - I don't know about international airings. From the promo pictures, it's going to be extremely pretty at the very least.

ahhhh, I love stuff like this so much. 48 years, 11 incarnations, one time traveller. The audio edit is amazing, and the vidder has pulled together so much footage and made it feel really cohesive and wonderful.

You Told The Drunks I Knew Karate by settiai (Doctor Who, Amy/Rory)

Ponds! Rory! This is silly and witty and makes wonderful use of all of Rory's flailiness but it is also a lovely, lovely look at how Rory loves Amy more than anything ever and it makes me smile a lot. <3333

Looks like half of fandom has already seen this, but just in case! So, so lovely, a fantastic look at the history of women in sci-fi.

Hands Away by chaila and beccatoria (Fringe/Sarah Connor Chronicles, Olivia/Sarah)

The Olivia/Sarah fever dream vid of my heart! I got to see a draft of this at Vidukon and it blew me away then - it's even more awesome now. Beautifully edited, full of visual parallels and really clever cutting and really brilliant all round.

The Price by thingswithwings

This is a biting satire about manpain. It's kind of amazing. People's reactions seem to vary from rage to facepalming to lulz - it's very funny in places, especially the end. Mostly, it makes me feel really sad. I wish this wasn't such an all-encompassing phenomenon in my shows. The accompanying meta is also an excellent read.

Hidden in Plain Sight by liseuse (Harry Potter, Pansy/Hermione)

For queer_fest, this is a gorgeous look at the difficulties and secret thrills of a covert relationship, as well as having a lovely grounding in the lives of these two young women and their friends, all being awesome post-Hogwarts. I enjoyed it a lot!

Grey. Red. Green. by calvinahobbes (Doctor Who, Vastra/Jenny)

a;ljsda. An awesome kink_bingo story that derives its hotness entirely from Jenny's mental state and a sense of tension that permeates the whole story as Jenny investigates Vastra's swords.

coffeesuperhero and leiascully are both writing loads of wonderful Eleven/River stories at the moment. I recommend them all! Particular favourites of mine include coffeesuperhero's let's live in the moment just this time, could we? and leiascully's double your pleasure, double your fun.

Roles by pocketmouse (Doctor Who, Amy/Rory)

I was excited as soon as I heard this was a story about teenage Rory crossdressing, and it did not disappoint. So completely adorable and written with a lovely, light touch.

Oh look, it's my two favourite queer FBI agents hanging out with each other! :DD Kait wrote this for me for my birthday and I love it ENTIRELY.

+ The Fandom Hot 20 Poll is open for your votes! There are some excellent choices in there, and I'm delighted to see how well some of the ladies are doing - I believe Amy and Zoe are presently leading the polls? I approve. River Song is also doing v. well, as are many other worthy candidates.

+ Speaking of hot women, thelittlebang, the femslash big bang, is open for sign-ups. *encourages you all* I will definitely sign up to do a complementary fanwork when the time comes, and maaaybe sign up for the main round as well. We will see.

So there was a really cool post by melannen called Love & Marriage about different kinds of poly marriages in sci-fi, including Ursula le Guin's sedoretu, a group marriage of four people involving a mix of romantic and platonic relationships. melannen explains it better. ANYWAY, all of that is a long-winded way of saying that From Morning to Night is a totally lovely story about the four of them being married in spaaaaace omg, and you all know my feelings about that. :D

This is a lovely, lovely set of four character studies. <3333

Aftermath by tellitslant (River, OCs)

Hee! A hilarious look at the poor, put-upon prison guards at Stormcage and how they feel about River's constant breakouts. Lovely world-building.

There has been much discussion of the similarities between Jack and River in certain respects. kaydeefalls makes it SO FUN WHEE.

I was so excited when t'wings emailed me about submitting this for my robots show, and it's just as hilarious and adorable and awesome as the initial premise promised. :D

Small Blue Thing by beccatoria (Fringe, Olivia)

OH, OLIVIA. HONEY. ;_; This is gorgeous - the song is perfect and haunting, there's some really great, subtle colour work here that adds a lot to the character study, and it's overall just a perfect and totally heartbreaking look at Olivia.

Angie by chaila (T:TSCC/BSG, Jesse/Riley, Caprica/Boomer)

eeee, two of my favourite doomed femslash ships vidded in parallel by one of my favourite vidders, this was a fantastic surprise in the Femslash show on Sunday morning. Sad and wonderfully editing and completely great. <3

Fascination by charmax (Billy Elliot)

This is PERFECT. Fantastic blending of song choice, editing, and source, this is just the most joyous, life-affirming thing. A great shot of happiness after the angst of the last two! It is also possible that I just took a break from writing this post so I could dance along to it for a while in my chair. >.>

When I Fall Asleep by buffyann (Doctor Who)

I was looking forward to this vid for the whole con, and it did not disappoint! It's beautiful the way all of the vidder's work is, and also captures the essence of Doctor Who in the most perfect way. Her use of movement and external footage is just sublime. Also, this gave me ALL THE FEELINGS. ALL OF THEM. I cannot. *flaps hands* <33333

Dreaming by calapine (Doctor Who, Tegan/Nyssa)

AWW. AWWWW. Another premiere for the Femslash show, this was totally delightful.

You should also watch bop_radar's Hug My Soul when she posts it, it's the most adorable thing in the world and I really want to check out the source for it now.
