Dear Moffat,

There's just a little under half an hour left before I sit down in front of your show. I hope it's good. Well, I know it's going to be good - I trust you on that score, you see, I trust you to write great scripts and choose good people to work with. I'm expecting quality, and no doubt I'll get it.

But I have other hopes, too. I hope that you have been thoughtful and kind in your storytelling, that you have remembered that just as so many people take heart from this show, we can also be hurt by it. I hope that you do not consider your casting to be 'colourblind', as a code for handwaving away the same troubling patterns as your predecessor. I hope that you are a better writer with no need for the sloppy and disturbing shorthand of disability and impaired mobility being a sign of evil. I hope that you know to give your women agency. I hope you remember that, much as we joke, Doctor Who's gay agenda has made a big difference to a whole generation of queer kids - it certainly did for me.

I am ready to fall in love with this wonderful, madcap world all over again, and I hope that doing so will not break my heart.

Yours in perhaps unwise and incautious excitement,
Amy.
