yuletide is distracting me from my family. oops!

+ Stories are submitted, cards are posted, presents are wrapped, I am prepared for Christmas! \o/

+ Which of course means I am giving myself a bunch of Yuletide plot bunnies, oops. A few notes on that - first off, writing Yuletide treats (which can be any length for any prompt) is open to anyone with an AO3 account. Get an account invite here. You can browse yuletide letters at the yuletide comm or in a very handy spreadsheet!

+ Also, a signal boost for Yuletide pinch-hitters via [personal profile] elynross:

Apparently Yahoogroups has changed some policy, and the wave of pinch hits sent out has DISABLED MY YAHOO ACCOUNT. I can't post to it to tell the pinch hitters why I'm not responding to claims. Of the 20+ groups I belong to or own, only 3 are displaying, presumably because the rest are on the email address that has been disabled. I... am not a happy camper.

At this point, I need to sleep, and there's very little I can do about this. If you want to claim a pinch hit, you'll need to *forward* or otherwise get the info to my personal email (elynross@gmail.com), and I'll work with that, and try and respond when I get up in a few hours.

Please boost the signal on this, to try and reach other people on the pinch hit list. I'm not sure how the second half of the pinch hits are going to go out, but we'll figure something out.

+ So, Merlin. Well, the last three episodes were some quality storytelling with consequences, at least. However, MY HEART, IT IS BROKEN. Oh, Gwen. Oh, Morgana. GET BACK TOGETHER, GIRLS!

Aside from that, I remain totally bemused by the supposed morality/politics of the show and thus find myself firmly on Team Evil with Morgana, Morgause and Mordred, and am really glad to see the last of the Dragon, jeez. Merlin is so fucked up by this point I cannot even begin to deal with it, I want to hug Morgana forever, Arthur is kind of amazing, Gaius can stfu, and Gwen > everyone.

It's that last point I am going to cling to, I think. I loved her in 2x13, because Angel totally brought it even though the script was all about her being the love interest. Picspam time!

Mmmm, collarbone.

I am hopping on the Arthur/Gwen bandwagon right now as it's by far the least screwed up relationship out of the OT4, which is impressive.

O hai, once and future queen. ♥ ♥ ♥

This is Gwen's face when she thinks about Morgana. ;_; GAH.

I'm not even done with 2x13 yet, but you are so right about Angel. She's so good at making her character richer and more interesting than the script does.

And very easy on the eyes, too.

Wait, sorry, did something else happen in the episode?

OH GWEN. BE STILL MY HEART.

Yeah, I think the Arthur/Gwen relationship is sadly the most honest of the OT4. I'm still sad we didn't get to see the progression of the relationship in the sense of them being friend and a slow build to makeouts in corners. BUT THEN AGAIN. I WANTED MAKEOUT IN THE CORNERS FOR EVERYONE SO BAH.

YES YES YES on Gwen. Angel is made of win. I loved that she made Gwen seem fierce and determined and in control even when stuff was about to fall on her head or whatever. Oh my girl, you are so sensible and determined and giving of love! Oh script, give her more awesome to do!

I remain totally bemused by the supposed morality/politics of the show and thus find myself firmly on Team Evil with Morgana, Morgause and Mordred.

I KNOW, RIGHT?! W. T. F.! I'd understand if the writers were trying to present a morally grey arena, but they really aren't, they just seem to have no idea what they're doing. They code certain people and choices as being bad, except they're also the ones talking sense. The way the show's going, it's almost portraying magic as evil and wrong, except when Merlin's doing it for the good of the kingdom. Think about it, when has a magic user besides Merlin been portrayed as anything but problematic and/or evil? It's bizarre, is what it is, and I can't wrap my head around it. I think they realise to some extent that their coding isn't really working, because then they have to make the "bad" people actually go do something bad-ish so we'll stop sympathising with them (like Mordred torturing soldiers with his mind or whatever, which, technically, is kind of out-of-character -- when had he ever done anything harmful or creepy before, besides be called Mordred and all that that implies?). I DON'T KNOW. STOP IT, SHOW.

If I can hazard a theory, I'd say that the writers want some moral ambiguity, but not as much as they've created.

At least the way I read it the 2nd half of S2 tries hard to redeem Uther and Gaius, after previously having set them up as oppressors, and makes "Team Evil" more evil (with the Morgana Passivity Exception Clause). It's not entirely working, but I do think they are trying.
