So, as you may have already spotted if you follow any number of Doctor Who fans anywhere on the internet, a mini episode was released today in the lead up to the 50th anniversary. It's AWESOME, and there are spoilers everywhere, which sucks.

I KNOW. The show is much better about keeping secrets these days, so fingers crossed! But either way I'm just so happy to have this. EIGHT MY LOVE. And I pretty much lost it at the companion roll call, so perfect.

I assume they must have known... I wouldn't have understood the canon significance of Karn, and the Sisterhood, otherwise.

I am SO FUCKING HAPPY with this. I have longed for the Time War, longed for Nine backstory -- and frankly we are getting Nine backstory even if we don't get Nine.

And Nine is really Ten? Do we have to change the way we're counting now?

I really don't think so. This minisode makes it pretty clear that Eight's regeneration will not be going by the name of the Doctor. So Nine is still the Ninth Doctor. John Hurt is going by a different name entirely.

HOLY CRAP THAT WAS AWESOME. So Eight didn't fight the Time War after all, fascinating. And now we have such a better idea of where Nine was coming from.

And we very clearly don't need to "renumber" the Doctors, IMO -- Nine is still the Ninth Doctor. That's not the name John Hurt's regeneration will be going by,

That was such a beautiful thing.

Well, yes, him too, but I was talking about the idea behind it. Just the image of the Doctor, during the Time War—star systems imploding, worlds disintegrating, nightmares closing in—just going around pulling people off of doomed ships. Not because they're great, not because they can turn the tide of the war, but because they're there and that's what a Doctor does. And somehow, somehow, he manages to be lighthearted in the middle of it. "Because the front crashes first."

It just gives you such a sense of what he truly sacrificed to become the War Doctor, the sheer goodness of the man—
