oh dear

So my mediafire account has been suspended, which means I have a lot of dead links scattered across the internet, ack. Given that some of the files on there are straight up copyrighted material, doesn't seem that there's much I can do to get it back.

Apologies for the inconvenience! Vids, podfic, fanmixes, no doubt many other things, all gone. I will start trying to restore as much as I can - if you're after something in particular and having problems, let me know and I'll prioritise it.

I'm not sure what a good long term solution is, really. For podfic, there is of course the archive, so my stuff will still be on there. <3 Vids, I'm a bit stuck. Do I need to look into getting my own webspace? I need somewhere permanent that can support a fair amount of files/downloads without costing me the earth and isn't going to throw me out. Suggestions welcome!

(Also dammit I have stuff to make I don't have tiiiime for this.)

...you could try putting it on GDrive, or maybe on DW. I don't know what the storage limit is on DW, though.

You could always go in on webspace with a handful of other fans? It might mitigate the cost a little.

All my vids are on DivShare (random link: http://www.divshare.com/download/12140428-0c3 to give an idea of what it looks like). It's free and I've never had any files go missing or taken down since opening the account in 2008. (That said, I am not by any means a popular vidder, so no idea about how soon you'd use up the monthly limit) The bad thing is that AO3 does not accept DivShare code, so no AO3 embeds (er... though if more popular vidders used it, AO3 might prioritize that!)

*puts on support hat* Send in a Support ticket! The coders are generally happy to whitelist any safe sites, we just don't always know which ones need added. (it might take a little while for anything to happen - the coders are taking a bit of a break til mid-January)

I... did that last year, or so. Somewhere there should be a support ticket. Maybe I should try again? (I just checked, and it definitely does not work.)

Hmmm, I'm not seeing any vid related tickets from you in the past couple years, though if it was a response to a previous ticket and not a new ticket in itself it might have gotten lost in someone's inbox. (assuming, of course, that you're using an email address related to your name!) Or it's possible it somehow never made it through? There have been times when a deploy caused some glitchiness.

I'd try again, if you don't mind. If for some reason we can't whitelist it, at least a coder can tell us why and we might be able to find some workaround.

I went looking, and I think I may have been in contact with the vidding committe (I don't see how to search the OTW at all, but this article on streaming vids, where it says DivShare at the bottom, they're quoting me... I had a discussion with *someone* (*somewhere*, likely in the comments, as I don't have email records, but I'm not seeing comments on any OTW articles) about adding in DivShare. Er. tl;dr I should go open a support ticket...

Aggh, that's so annoying. This page discusses the pros and cons of a bunch of sites that allow hosting of vids. Not a vidder myself, so I couldn't rec any one of them in particular.

Oh no! That must be really frustrating.

If your video embeds themselves are still functional, you could just find a free YouTube video downloader that doesn't look like it hands out viruses and recommend it to people, at least in the meantime. I think CNET has some they recommend. Although I don't know if any of those work with Vimeo, if you're using that.

re: youtube downloads, this greasemonkey script is my favorite. it downloads the original source file directly from youtube (so no need to worry about downloading through a third party or anything), and integrates cleanly into youtube's graphical interface.

I have a deal with a couple of other vidders that, for $25 a year to cover a domain name and the monthly maintenance fee my host charges me for having lots of domains on one account, I set up a sub account on my website for them. I've got plenty of space, and my host has never given me any issues about hosting vids on my site in the 10+ years that I've been using them.

If you're interested, just let me know. :)

Urgh, that's awful. I'm really lucky that I have a friend who hosts me, so it's never been something I have to worry about. :( You could open a new mediafire account with a new email address? Though I know that the spectre of deletion would probably still loom large. I don't know for sure, but I suspect it was the copyrighted material rather than the vids that got you suspended; I do have a mediafire account (though I don't use it for vids) and if I put anything there that might get me suspended, I zip it and rename it something unsuspicious. I have no idea if that actually makes a difference but so far it's seemed to. :/

Other than that, you're probably looking at private hosting or at least the potential risk of one day having to move bases.

Filetrip.net offers 100GB of free storage space, and is a slightly more towards the MegaUpload end of the spectrum than Mediafire, which means that I doubt they'll pull your account for hosting vids, but at the same time, it's more likely to one day get shut down, or turned into a straight-up file locker, like happened to FileSonic. That said, it's been around for 4 years, so it's at least somewhat stable. And it offers a lot of free storage.

I host vids for free for a couple of friends, so I'm happy to do that for you. What I've done is set up a little sub-domain of my site for each of them, and to make it hassle-free, they send me the vid (generally on sendspace or just about any sort of free download site), and I upload it and send them a link. I have plenty of bandwidth, so that isn't an issue. If that'd help you, just let me know.

Looks like this is happening too a lot of people right now. :/ Yay for people finding solutions for you though!
