Month of Awesome Women: Tara Maclay (Buffy the Vampire Slayer)

"Yeah. You learn her source, and, uh, we'll introduce her to her insect reflection."

Tara Maclay

So here's a fannish confession: I'm not a huge Buffy fan. Not because I don't like it! But because I have watched it erratically at best - I wasn't interested when it was airing, and I have watched random episodes at random times since. Most of what I know about the show I learned from Wikipedia.

However, my familiarity with a given episode is likely to be about 10 times better if Tara was in it. I LOVE HER SO MUCH.

In a show filled with characters who are always ready with a witty quip or a charming smile no matter how socially inept they might be, Tara is strikingly and heartbreakingly quiet and unassuming when we first meet her. She's also wise, and smart, and brave, and powerful. Oh, and she's adorable with cats, and she's gay. How am I supposed to hold out against that kind of package? <3

She has this wonderful gentleness to her, but that doesn't mean she's not made of strong stuff, because she completely is. She was so, so good for Willow, for the rest of the characters, and oh, damn you, Joss.

Tara is basically everything I aspire to be in life. (And a girl shaped like me on television, o delight!) Just watching her episodes -- she has this amazing calming, steady presence. I love how her relationship with Willow begins with Willow helping her out of her shell, but as it continues on Tara's innate strength and warmth comes out and she becomes Willow's anchor. And her friendship with Dawn, the other unintentional outcast, and the little family Dawn and Willow and Tara have for a while: MADE OF SUNSHINE. ♥
