Torchwood 2x10: From Out Of The Rain

I liked the overall feel of this, the idea of the aliens was nice and the main two were suitably creepy and interesting. Hurray for old cinemas and travelling shows and bits of Cardiff history, and I love the idea that Jack was in the circus for a while. But I felt like the premise could have packed much more punch then it actually did - even saving the kid at the end left me a little cold. Ianto's investment in the case was almost completely unexplained, and um, where was the Jack/Ianto? Don't get me wrong, I do love the way that's all very understated a lot of the time, but this was a little extreme, by which I mean non-existent, very odd considering a lot of the episode was just the two of them.

Actually, this one really had a season one feel to it - I know that's been said about a few episodes this time round, but the alien concept was much more along the lines of Ghost Machine or Small Worlds rather than the more action-y stuff we've been used to, and the lack of character development is also a fit, heh.

So, as the next three episodes are all Chris Chibnall ones, do we think that means we're moving into a finale story arch from next week? Please don't spoil me if you actually know any plot details, but I'm curious as to whether it's a double or triple parter of some kind. Also, yay Chibnall, I am looking forward to those.

Agreed, really 100%. I thought the conversation that Jack and Ianto had in the board room was lovely and intimate (though not on an intimate topic, per se), but there were a couple of moments where it was actually ludicrous that they didn't you know... touch one another. Like in the theater in the beginning, or after it was all over before Ianto just turned and left. That felt forced, to me, especially b/c Jack is if nothing else, a physical guy. ;)

Without revealing any plot details, (and I know positively NOTHING about the final ep), 11 and 12 seem completely unrelated in theme. Which has really left me wondering if 13 will be a major cliffhanger, as 43 minutes isn't much time for a wham-bam season finale with actual closure!

I have now watched it three times - and I no longer completely hate it. I still think the characterisation is majorly off and the ending is terrible.

But I'm liking more things about it. The set ups still interesting and some of the tone is lovely. They just needed to really get a grip on it and I just think that it was badly explained and over-complicated. I might actually write a post sometime today to try and work out how they could make it better. We'll see.

Oh, man, I thought it was really awful. I pretty much spent the whole episode laughing incredulously with my sister. But that's what I've been doing for most of the episodes of Torchwood, so this really isn't anything new.

Thanks for the links! I think you've become my official Torchwood source. :D (No pressure or anything, of course.)

And yeah, the lack of Jack/Ianto stuck out like something very sticky-outy. I liked seeing them working together, but just because they're working doesn't mean they can't touch at all.

Yeah. I understand not making a big deal of it, because, like I said, it was nice seeing them work together and it doesn't have to be innuendo all the time. But a hand on the shoulder or summat wouldn't have killed anyone. *sulk*

I agree that it could have had more of a punch but I did love the whole old film clip, history, circus thing going on. Made this history major SQUEE.

I also liked Ianto being so very interested in this and I really wish we could have known why. I mean he was clearly very into this whole thing, felt very personal. I was waiting for him to say that someone in his family disappeared in that way in the past or that he had circus connects in his family somewhere back there. I am going to be writing MAJOR fanfiction off this one. Already did one!

And I agree with the Jack/Ianto being very noticbly absent except for them standing closer together than some people might. I mean, it was just them and they are in a relationship yet nothing. So little odd.

But over all I liked this episode a lot!
