* JKR may disagree with me on this, but he never liked Lily. He didn't think she deserved to be at Hogwarts, and resented her for her talent and popularity, and even more so for the fact she had a tendency to treat him kindly.

* Before war began to brew, he had dreams of disappearing into some kind of research institute, where he wouldn't have to deal with other people. However, as soon as he was introduced to the concept of Death Eaters, he dismissed this as a childish wish, and began a game of self-preservation he has been playing in various capacities ever since. He wants to live at all costs.

* With Dumbledore gone, a hapless student under his wing, and the world seemingly collapsing all around him, he has a rather worrying sensation that he may have something like responsibility towards others. He's trying not to think about that.
