The last of the requests, for shortstack88
James/Lily, 900 words, PG-13
‘Lily, Lily, Lily. I’m afraid this isn’t what I’ve come to expect from you.’ Slughorn shook his head sadly, and Lily simmered inwardly. He knew she’s been in the hospital wing for a week.
‘I’m sorry, sir,’ she said through gritted teeth. ‘Won’t happen again.’
Slughorn grunted and went back to the front of the class, before pontificating at length about the importance of paying attention this year in Potions, as it was a compulsory OWL and second year was not too early to start preparing. Unfortunately for him, his class were a little distracted during this speech. Instead, they were struggling to contain laughter at the sight of two walrus tusks replacing his usual moustache.
Lily buried her face in her hands, unable to control her giggles. In front of her, James Potter, who had been casually tilting his chair and twirling his wand for some time now, looked back over to her and gave her a wink.

A gang of Slytherin sixth years walked past just as Lily was coming out of a Charms lesson. With a smack, she smashed right into Narcissa Black. One of Narcissa’s simpering friends ran up to her.
‘Are you alright?’
Narcissa stared at Lily as though she was a stain on her robes. ‘Yes, I’m fine – it was just the Mudblood’s books that touched me, luckily.’
With a sneer, she turned away, flicking her hair in a way that made Lily feel violently ill. She fumbled in her bag for her wand, but James got there first.
‘Oi, you!’ he yelled.
Narcissa turned around, staring at Potter. ‘Excuse me? How dare you talk to me like that?’
James just grinned. ‘Sorry, sorry. Cissy, I hear they’re calling you now. Sissy Cissy, who hasn’t got the guts to turn down Malfoy’s advances.’
‘What are you talking about, you little brat?’ she snapped, and Lily was delighted to see her turning a rather undignified shade of crimson.
‘Word gets around, Narcissa dear. Really, if you want to keep these things to yourself, you shouldn’t make quite such a racket where people might hear you!’ He turned to Lily, shaking his head sadly. ‘Young witches these days – shocking behaviour, don’t you think?’
Lily nodded gravely. ‘It’s just terrible, really.’
Meanwhile, the other Slytherins were looking suspiciously at Narcissa. ‘You said you haven’t given him anything more than a goodnight kiss!’ one of them hissed.
‘I haven’t!’ Narcissa shot back, ‘he’s lying, must have got him from that idiot cousin of mine.’
The others didn’t look convinced. With one piercing look around, Narcissa turned tail and marched down the corridor as fast as she could in her ridiculously high shoes.
The rest of the Slytherins began to dissipate, and Lily considered for a moment before sending a well-aimed Diffindo to part Narcissa from one of her heels, watching in delight as she toppled over.
James looked impressed. ‘Nice touch, Evans!’
She beamed.

James had been wandering around the common room for the past fifteen minutes, peering under sofas and checking behind curtains. Lily watched with bemusement while a First Year with extraordinarily big eyes came down the stairs.
‘Aha, Davey! Any luck yet?’ James asked.
The boy shook his head sadly. ‘Can’t find him anywhere.’
‘Not to worry mate – we’ll track him down! Come on, let’s try the corridor – maybe he’s snuck out there.’
James gently lead the boy out of the tower. Some hours later, he returned, arms full of an enormous ginger cat with a very excited Davey tagging along at his heels.
‘Wow, James, you’re amazing! I’d never have thought to look there!’ he chattered excitedly.
James laughed, catching Lily’s eye, who quickly went back to her book.
‘Of course you would have, don’t be silly. Now run along, I’m sure Sweep’s in need of a lie down after that little adventure.’
Davey ran off, clutching his cat in his arms and eyes wild with excitement. Lily looked up again and gave James a smile, but he just looked embarrassed and disappeared out of the portrait hole again.

‘I mean, you’re all idiots, but he’s just ridiculous. The way he treats Severus is appalling, Remus, why on earth do you let him get away with it?’
‘Lily …’
‘And this latest escapade, whatever it was? For God’s sake, is he ever going to grow up? We’re in bloody Sixth Year now, but he might as well get shunted back to Third.’
‘Lily, please, listen to me for a minute…’
‘One of these days, he’s going to get what’s coming to him, by doing something stupid--‘
‘Lily. Shut up. That ‘latest escapade’ wasn’t James’ fault. If you must know, he was saving Severus’ life. From me.’
Lily sat down suddenly. ‘I’m sorry, what?’

Lily laughed suddenly.
James looked perturbed. ‘What’s so funny?’
‘Oh, nothing,’ she replied. ‘You’re really not so bad after all, are you?’
James rolled his eyes. ‘Only taken you six years to realise it! Always quick on the uptake, aren’t you?’
‘Shut up.’
‘Shut up,’ he mimicked softly.
‘I knew you were alright ages ago, you know. You just kept messing up again afterwards.’
‘Oh. Well. Couldn’t be helped, really.’
Lily raised an eyebrow. ‘I’m sure it could have.’
James didn’t bother to reply. He just drew her in closer, and kissed her for the third time, under the oak tree as the autumn leaves fell.
And that's a wrap on those! You people made me write over 4000 words, my my! Terribly fun, though.
