Torchwood, Doctor Who and Merlin news, Star Trek meta, and a poll re. ST:TOS rewatch fun

I am full of cold and thus good for nothing apart from drinking liquid fruit (I'd say juice, but that would be doing Innocent smoothies a real disservice, mmm), and clicking idly through fandom. Here, let me throw links at you!

***

Up and coming series news (lots of mild spoilers of the casting/press release/actor interview variety):

Regarding the new series of Torchwood, we have new trailers up (via James Moran) on the BBC UK and US sites. There's also (via [livejournal.com profile] lefaym) an interview in the Gay Times with John Barrowman and Gareth David-Lloyd, complete with pictures for anyone who's into that sort of thing. *g*

Re. the trailer: zomg creepy, and also oh, Gwen, they're really pulling out all the angst on this one, aren't they? Re. the interview, which admittedly I have only skimmed, I am very pleased to hear that we might actually get scenes that are about Jack and Ianto's relationship, whatever it might be. That would be good.

Regarding the new series of Doctor Who, (via half my flist) the new companion has been announced. Hurray! News of any sort about S5 is exciting. I hope she will actually be a Scottish character. Also, she is pretty. I am sure people have plenty of opinions in more detail than that, but considering we don't know anything about her yet, that would be what we call jumping the gun. But eee, companion!

And finally, regarding the new series of Merlin, the BBC has a press release with lots of casting news, and there are con reports flooding on. I feel that this post is particularly relevant to my interests (via [personal profile] heathershaped). Lancelot! More Gwen/Morgana good times! My face, it does this --> :D

[livejournal.com profile] liviapenn wrote a really awesome meta post on Star Trek XI and Kirk, Spock, Bones & Uhura: the new OT4 that got me conceptualising dynamics in a whole new and fun way. My eyes are all heart-shaped at this fandom right now. I will probably put together a recs post of some of my absolute favourite Reboot stories in a week or two, but in the meantime you can find an ever-growing collection here on my delicious account.

Speaking of Star Trek. Your opinions, let me canvas them. It seems to me that lots and lots of us are getting very fannish about the new Trek without being familiar with TOS, or are familiar with TOS but have a desire to rewatch it. I have a vague notion of throwing up a post, say, once a week about a particular episode, and there can be picspam and summaries and parodies and fic and icons and discussions and recs, whatever people wanted. I'm leaning towards hosting it on my journal rather than creating a community, because I think that will make it easier for people to dip in and out as they wish. I'd also want to host it all on one journalling site, which makes sense for discussion, and that would probably be Dreamwidth (much longer comment limits, for one thing), and folks without Dreamwidth accounts could participate via OpenID -- though, if you're still after an account, there are invites all over the place right now, so I can definitely either give you one or source one out for you. Also, if people who didn't subscribe to me wanted to participate, they could do so by tracking my star trek rewatch tag, either on Dreamwidth or LJ.

If there's sufficient interest (to be honest, that can pretty much mean 'anyone apart from me') over the weekend, then I will announce the first episode on Monday, and throw up a discussion post next weekend.

Poll notes: clicking 'yes' to any of this isn't a commitment or anything, just a 'sounds good!'. Also, I am looking for the best introductory episode as opposed to the best episode of all time (I am told, for instance, The City On The Edge Of Forever should be watched later on in my discovery adventures) -- as you can see, the ones I have listed are mostly known for the crack. TOS aficionados, I look to you for guidance!

I've only seen a few episodes of TOS so I'm definitely up for a watch/rewatch - do you know if the episodes are streaming anywhere?

I would love this so, so much. I haven't seen TOS in forever, and even then I only watched a handful of episodes (Voyager was my show, hee). I'm actually really looking forward to this, if it gets off the ground. :D

This is in no way intended to suggest this excellent idea not go ahead, but I thought you all might enjoy also reading these TOS caps and recaps from the first season and a half. [profile] cimness did them a couple of years ago.

Here via [personal profile] musesfool, and if it's okay, I just subscribed to keep an eye on this idea.

I'm familiar with the movies, especially IV, but have only seen a couple episodes of TOS a long time ago and would love to become more familiar with it.

Hello! I'm here from [personal profile] musesfool as well. I've been watching and sort-of blogging about TOS for the first time in my journal, but I'm not very far in. I'd love to do it in a more organized group!

As long as it didn't start up right away, I would be totally down with something like this. It sounds like a great way to get properly acquainted with TOS. Also, a lot of fun.

i've actually just added TOS to my netflix watch instantly queue, so i'd defs be down with something like this, provided good-natured mockery was welcomed. i've only seen a very tiny number of episodes before, and they definitely bring that out in me, ha.

I think if you're going to do a rewatch, you have to start at the beginning. Otherwise, if you skip around, you're going to hit on discussion topics that require referencing past episodes, and if people haven't seen them yet...

(I've seen them all, multiple times, but it's been a looooong time! :-P)

Also, here's a handy-dandy list of eps from the Memory-Alpha wiki - a great place for all things Trek!

Okay, the Doctor's new companion? Absolutely adorable. And ginger! And adorable. I love her already. I don't care if that makes me shallow either :D She has a very sweet face.

Also: Mackenzie Crook! On Merlin! I did a squirm of glee, because that can't not be awesome.

[identity profile] magic-at-mungos.livejournal.com 2009-05-29 07:51 pm (UTC)(link)
New companion is gorgeous I like her!

[identity profile] lorannah.livejournal.com 2009-05-29 08:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Well you already know my feelings about new companion - they are all shallow and delighted feelings. Also Merlin - squee. And meta squee. And Star Trek squee (so much love for this at the moment and for the fandom and ridiculous crushes on all the actors - I'm fitting a cinema rewatch in this weekend).

Also I'd definitely be interested in a Star Trek rewatch (or in my case mostly first watch) - so count me in. And, out of interest, any suggestions where a reawakened Trekkie might be able to download episodes less than legally? Thought you might have some ideas and I already have a massive list of episodes I want to track down.

I've been toying over the Who rewatch idea as well recently, trying to work out how best to make it work.

Also, if you could point me in the direction of a dreamwidth account, would be appreciated.

loves you

[identity profile] lorannah.livejournal.com 2009-05-29 08:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Also - meant to say that also massive Torchwood squee - because Children of Earth is looking awesome and yet also filling me with massive trepidation, because it's all so dark. *meep* Please to not be hurting my team.

[identity profile] azelma.livejournal.com 2009-05-29 08:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm very pleased with the new companion. I'm glad she's new. I think the best way to go with Eleven is to give him a clean slate.

[identity profile] kalichan.livejournal.com 2009-05-29 08:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Yay for awesome together-ish fannishness. I love when we all go squee over the same things. Merlin, Whoniverse, Star Trek...

*eeep*

I love and adore ST: TOS so much, and as a public service feel I ought to state that, incidentally, ALL the original eps are available for free on youtube. http://www.youtube.com/show/startrek

(At least in the U.S. ... try it out for me, and tell me if it's true for you too?)

Random thoughts:

New companion is HOT. I totally, totally would. Also I really really hope they make the character Scottish! But as Steven M is Scottish, I think it is quite likely :) Finally, we're taking the series back from Wales! Yessss! heehee ;)
