Doctor Who 11x01
Series 11, my god. All right pals, I've got the cushions, the kettle's on, let's hop back into the blanketfort of squee!
First the only thing that sucked - Grace dying, and in such a fridging way, was some bullshit. It wasn't necessary, it never is, and creating such a fantastic character and then killing her to motivate everyone else really sucked.
Also the whole funeral scene and Graham talking about his cancer remission was kind of rough going for me, oof. Here's hoping that's not *too* central for the rest of the series.
But otherwise? I LOVED IT SO MUCH OMG. Whittaker is absolutely the Doctor, from accidentally kidnapping some humans to make a teleporter out of a microwave. She's such a contrast to Capaldi with such a strong sense of compassion and interest in individual people almost immediately, but the same energy and moral code that the Doctor always has.
Her instant fondness for both Ryan and Yasmin mirrored my own instant fondness for them, what good precious cupcakes! Also it's wild to be 13 years older than when I watched 19 year old Rose in 2005. I now understand that 19 is in fact very young. They seem like wonderful companions and I can't wait for them to meet the TARDIS.
I'm expecting to warm up more to Graham, and I do appreciate the comic relief of the dude who just doesn't understand why people are running *towards* the danger.
Having lived in Sheffield for four years this was so deeply, profoundly Yorkshire and I loved it. The shots of the Peak District, the bus station, even roads with tram tracks on, it was all great. I laughed at the shout out to Sheffield steel, and a drunk guy throwing his takeaway salad at an alien was one of the most Northern things I've ever seen. I too have had drunk people throw food at me on the streets of Sheffield, actually!
I'm so excited for the rest of the series - so many characters! So many non-white characters! And the most diverse creative team the show's ever had. I'm so super excited for Malorie Blackman's episode for one thing, ahhh.
I'm gonna need some icons.

Omg, yes. This. It's just hit me so hard rewatching early New Who this past week.
The team dynamic is so much fun and I love they are accidental kidnap companions THE WAY GOD INTENDED COMPANIONS TO BE. I just want so much to see more of all of them.
I was so meh at Bradley Walsh but then I read an interview where he was all yay about Hartnell and going to the cinema to see the Cushing movies, and I am sufficently shallow that that was quite enough for my yay.
Still, will never forgive for not keeping Whittaker in shirt and waistcoat.

*dreamy sigh*

I really loved this interpretation of the Doctor. I just really liked her always putting herself between badness and others. it was very enjoyable. So happy!

Whittaker is great: sharp and warm and odd, just like The Doctor ordered.

2. However, Yas and Ryan are very sweet and I want them to be besties. The scene in the car where she said “hello Ryan’s nan!” Felt very real
3. Eurgh. Why did she have to be a copper though? Couldn’t she be a paramedic or a first responder or something?
4. Ryan’s dyspraxia- v good so far. No magical cures. Thank you please.
5. Magid Mah is clearly a Time Lord who has lost his Tardis.
6. Other thoughts to be found on the twitters in my reaction thread
7. Lots of brown people to come!!
8. Non London accents!

ad 4. Please, no curing. He's lovely, and he will work it all out just the way it is if only Chibnall has some sense.
ad 8. Haha, I actually had to ask my wife for a translation at one point.
MOI: Why is The Doctor talking about hats?
HER: No, she is talking about HEIGHTS!
MOI: Northern English people...

I was really pissed that they killed grace too. That felt totally unnecessary.

I love the Doctor. I love her. So much. I love that she picked up her outfit in a charity shop; I love that her sonic is made of spoons; I love that she has no idea how short she is yet; I love that compassion and protection of others is at the core of her being. What a good.
I loved Carl and his self-help tape.
I loved that Ryan didn't magically become able to ride a bike at the end. He's still dyspraxic.
I love all the tiny important details that make up everyone's characters. Like the Canada flag in the background of Rahul's video.
I loved the lighting and the feel of it all. I liked how we felt how alone she was without her TARDIS. She's very smol and on a large planet and wants to get back to her TARDIS but she stops to protect these nearby humans because that's who she is.
I love that the alien looked like a big electrical plate of Klingon gagh.
I loved 'Tim Shaw'.
I loved 'eat my salad, Halloween'.
I will also need many, many icons.

But everything else was love! I'm loving Whittaker as the Doctor, she's got exactly the sort of lovely warm eccentricity I was hoping for. I'm more exciting for DW than I've been in a long time and it's such a wonderful feeling. :D
