Reading Wednesday

Writing this so I can pretend like I've done something with the past hour other than sitting here refreshing Karen Gillan's twitter feed while she does a Q&A. (SHE'S SO CUTE!)

What I've read:

So I bought myself an ereader for my birthday last week because for all that TV and fanfic are worthy pursuits, I'm rubbish at fitting in any of the many novels I would also like to read! Having a shiny new toy has helped.

ANYWAY. Recently I have read:

Monstrous Regiment by Terry Pratchett. Which, predictably, I loved! Polly was a great protagonist and I enjoyed the gentle queerness of it all, not to mention the stealth Bechdel Test-passing.

The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. About a decade after everyone else. Although I hadn't seen the film either I feel like I'd picked up most of the plot of this via fandom. So it didn't surprise me too much but it was gripping anyway. And Katniss and Peeta both hit some of my favourite character archetype buttons really hard, so that helped. <3

What I'm reading:

Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins. I know far less about the rest of the trilogy so I'm finding this hard to put down, which is a problem on public transport occasionally. >.>

KATNISS! PEETA! *meeps* *goes back to reading*

What I'll read next:

Well, Mockingjay, because omg I must know what happens. (No spoilers, please!) And I have also picked up Neil Gaiman's new book, The Ocean at the End of the Lane, so that'll be next.

Gah! The Hunger Games! I love that trilogy more than it deserves, probably. I only read it for the first time last summer, under odd circumstances. I'm interested to hear what you think of the next two.

I am SO EXCITED for you to read these and to hear what you think! I really love them like, kind of obsessively a lot, including the end, which is sort of an unpopular opinion?? But I don't want to give it away. But, omg, Katniss and Peeta. KATNISS AND PEETA. KATNISS IS SO INTENSE! AND PEETA IS SO CUNNING. AND I LOVE THEIR FACES. AND ALSO HAYMITCH.

I can understand why that opinion would be unpopular, but I agree with you. And the rest of your comment.

Hee! I never thought of stealth Bechdel Test-passing but it totally is. (Mind you, I think most of Terry Pratchett's books would pass the Bechdel Test... except maybe for the early Guards novels (not enough female characters to have much conversation before Cheery joins) and the Unseen University novels (again, many, many guys).)

And I have also picked up Neil Gaiman's new book, The Ocean at the End of the Lane, so that'll be next.

I havent' read that yet, but I want to.

When you reach the final line of Catching Fire, give a moment's thought to those of use who read them as they came out, and how we had to wait AN ENTIRE YEAR before Mockingjay came out...then dive right back in. Because you can! :D

Read Mockingjay slowly. She rushes a bit at the end and I remember speed-reading to finish and missing a ton. Can't say more without spoilers, but good luck! I really enjoyed Catching Fire even if the movie casting has left me listless and depressed.

It baffles my mind a little that someone would ask "Do you like being ginger?" because I always forgot about the redheaded cultural divide. It means something so different in Canada/the US. I'm glad she loves it though! GO TEAM

oooooo can't wait to hear how you like Catching Fire

Also interested to hear what you think of the Hunger Games trilogy. I am not really a fan (I think I am the wrong generation for it), but I did very much enjoy the first book, and I think the things Collins gets right are fascinating. Katniss is a great complex character, and I totally love Peeta.

But it always bugs me when I discover a fan favorite long after everyone else has & can't find any good meta, so here are some favorites:

Heather did one of my favorite fan reactions to the books. Part 1 (THG & CF) is here:

And here's Part 2 on Mockingjay:

And selenak has some very smart meta on both the 1st film & the books (including a comparison of Peeta & Rory from DW which will warm your heart) as well as some fanfic recs here:

Enjoy!
