spoilers, sweetie!
Okay, the BBC are allegedly making a couple of big announcements re. Doctor Who today including unveiling the new companion. Beneath the cut is a rundown of the things we know so far as well as the latest tabloid rumours re. said companion. Will update with news as it comes in.
WHAT WE KNOW SO FAR: casting/location/episode title/writer spoilers, but no major plot spoilers eta: now with some info re. Ponds' departure via Moff
eta: Jenna-Louise Coleman CONFIRMED as the new companion - as yet no other details. This is her:

eta2: Her first episode is the Christmas special.
eta3: (I'm getting these from @bbcdoctorwho)
Moffat I actually hate you sometimes, stop trolling me, just stop it. It's not funny. DD:
He's a lying liar who lies, a lying liar who lies, a lying liar who lies ... oh god I can't deal with this for the rest of the year it's going to be terrible. a;lskdja;slkj
-----
+ Amy and Rory are leaving this season, possibly halfway through. Quotes from Moffat and Karen suggest it'll be final, heartstring-tugging but not necessarily tragic.
+ No one has officially confirmed that River will be back but I see no reason why she won't be.
+ Karen, Arthur and Matt have been filming a Western episode in Spain that is possibly called 'Gun Slingers'
+ Confirmed writers for s7 include Chris Chibnall (Torchwood, 42, The Hungry Earth/Cold Blood) and Toby Whithouse (Being Human, School Reunion, Vampires of Venice, God Complex). I assume Mark Gatiss as well.
+ The series will start airing at some point in the autumn, unclear whether it'll be continuous or if there'll be a gap, and whether the Christmas special will fall mid or post-series, but 14 episodes have been commissioned.
+ Guest stars so far include Mark Williams, Rupert Graves, David Bradley and Ben Browder (!). But it looks like both them and Chibnall and Whithouse are all involved in the first three episodes, so after that who knows. I'm certainly holding out for it to get less white dude heavy, much as I'm excited about Browder and Graves in particular!
+ Current tabloid rumours suggest that the Beeb are going to announce Jenna-Louise Coleman [imdb link] as the new companion later this morning. I have no opinion on that until it's confirmed, but if it *is* her then I'm disappointed it's not more of a change from the usual young pretty white girl but she looks adorable and whoever they've cast is no doubt very talented. WE WILL SEE.
+ More as it happens! (... oh shit I need to get back to work /o\)

Steven "Amy & Rory will leave in a final encounter with the Weeping Angels in ep 5. Not everyone gets out alive and I mean it this time"
oh my god, Moff, PLEASE HAVE THE WEEPING ANGELS SEND AMY AND RORY BACK IN TIME AND THEY ADOPT LITTLE MEL AND RAISE HER.

Aw! I was so excited and then you mentioned the one thing that would make it awful instead of THE BEST!! Erasing River is not allowed. Besides, it could never happen, Lake Silencio is a fixed point. *phew*

I almost wish I hadn't thought of it, because surely it can't be right if I thought of it!
On the other hand, if I have actually called it, bragging rights for ETERNITY.

My addendum, which I also get eternal bragging rights for if I've called it: Moffatt saying that "Not everyone gets out alive?" It's true. Rory is going to take down a Weeping Angel. Because Moffatt doesn't always troll the fanbase in a bad way, and he's thoroughly amused by rorywilliamsfacts on tumblr.

They certainly could have picked a less typical actress for the part, but I'm sure she'll be great. Still holding out hope that she may be an alien, or at least from a different time period!
I will weep if there is no more River, because she is my favourite for always.

And there will absolutely be more River, I'm about 110% sure. Everyone loves her too much to let go of her just yet.

OMG Moff, stop trolling!! You are making me need to rewatch The Doctor Dances instead of write.

And of course that Moffat totally means everyone in the episode except the Doctor, Rory and Amy will die because if he actually kills off Rory and Amy I'll just... IDK mostly just cry a whole lot.

I like the theories people are tossing around about adopting Melody or going back in time or other non-actual-death scenarios.
"Everybody lives, Rose! Just this once, everybody lives!" Neeeeeed.
Also, uh, I'm going to need some non-KGill icons. Hoom.
I do love the idea of Matt having to keep up with Jenna, and the Doctor being out-energied by his companion. ("energied" is a word because I say so.) That will be fun to watch!

Jenna-Louise Coleman is totally adorable, and like everyone else I'm going to say that she'd better be queer or from another time period or an alien or any combination of the above, because otherwise, oh my god, pretty young white girl again, I'm sure like every other companion I'll adore her but in the meantime this is getting a bit silly.

Yeah - I really hope at the very least she's not from London. I don't know what her accent's like these days but I see she's from Lancashire originally, and a Northern companion would be brilliant.

(Moffat is a lying liar who lies, but he's also an incurable shipper of shippiness and too clever for his own good. Amy and Rory wind up alive and together, I will stake my sonic screwdriver on that. And he thinks it's a little bit more heartbreaking than it actually is, I betcha. *wise face*)

OH MY GOD SPEAKING OF CANTON WHAT IF THE NEW COMPANION IS LIKE, CANTON'S DAUGHTER
THAT WOULD BE AWESOME
AND OBVIOUSLY SHE'S BRITISH BECAUSE CANTON AND HIS HUSBAND MOVED TO THE UK OR SOMETHING IN LIKE, THE 70'S
I KNOW THIS IDEA HAS NO BASIS IN REALITY AND THERE ARE NO FACTS TO SUPPORT IT BUT THIS IS MY CANON NOW, BRB, WRITING THAT STORY.
(Also, about the other stuff: Moffat lies all the time, we'll probably get to that episode and eighteen more red shirts will die and he'll be like HAHAHA I TOLD YOU I MEANT IT AND I DID, SEE, and we'll all shake our fists like David Tennant and shout MOFFAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAT and he'll just be all >deal with it<. So basically business as usual for Steven Trollface Moffat.)

I wasn't going to read any spoilers, then some fuckwit on my twitter feed retweeted the BBC, so there went that. That said, I think there is only one scenario that would satisfy me: they end up in 1969 and find just-regenerated wee!Melody, and raise her. Which would explain why even if the Doctor found them (or just one of them, if only one of them got Angeled), they wouldn't just get back on the TARDIS with him. It would also help explain how Melody gets from the US in 1969 to Leadworth in the 1990s.
I'm not expecting it, but that's what I'd like.
ETA: Ahahahaha, and I see everyone else agrees with me.

And omg Rupert Graves!!!!!
