Merlin 2x02

Liveblog reactions as last week.

+ Hi Adrian Lester hi! Normally I would be crossing my fingers and hoping you'll live, but I am aware that the chances of that are really very slim. Alas!

+ ... wait a minute. They're exploring the idea Arthur's a murderer, really? Omg, show, please actually go there. I am dubious, however.

+ ! It's called The Once and Future Queen? I did not know that! AWESOME. :D *waits eagerly for Gwen*

+ Merlin's little sporfle! HOW IS HE SO CUTE. HOW. *hearts*

+ HI GWEN YOU LOOK PRETTY. (They're not going to explain the dress thing, are they? Clearly it is therefore canon that it's from Morgana. :D)

+ Arthur/Gwen/Merlin = OT3, ahahahah. Clearly I am not going to stop shipping everyone with everyone any time soon.

+ GWEN'S FAAAACE OMG, she is so dubious of Arthur and I love her.

+ Also, while I appreciate what they're doing here with Arthur's assumptions and privilege and Gwen being gracious enough to just go with it, why has she conveniently moved house to somewhere with only one bed? Eh, *handwave*

+ I may have a little thing for hardcore assassin types, um. MYROR IS AWESOME.

+ WHY SO ADORABLE, GWEN? eeeee!

+ Oh, Merlin, ILU. He's so sad Arthur doesn't know him for who he truly is!

+ GWEN HAS FLOWERS IN HER HAIR.

+ Why yes, approximately 50% of this post is turning out to be I HEART GWEN YAY.

+ ARTHUR YOU PRIVILEGED PRAT. I love you, but, you know. I am glad they are making it nice and canon that Gwen >>> you at the moment.

+ OH MY GOD MERLIN I LOVE YOU SO MUCH COME HERE AND LET ME HUG YOU. That outburst at Gaius was just -- OH SWEETHEART. :(((

+ Okay, it is twenty minutes in and Morgana hasn't even had a line yet.

+ THIS is how you do Arthur/Gwen, I love it.

+ I TAKE IT BACK. Gwen > THE UNIVERSE.

+ Arthur is officially the KING OF PRATS, god. Way to be.

+ No, really. EMPEROR OF PRATS, OH MY GOD. *cringe*

+ OMG KISS WHAT I WAS NOT EXPECTING THAT.

+ Plot plot plot.

+ Okay, so did Myror just RANDOMLY DIE FROM FALLING OVER? I mean, what. Excuse me while I retcon that. He was way too awesome to die! Also, that was totally unnecessary, STOP KILLING ALL THE BAD GUYS AND THE BLACK DUDES, SHOW.

+ Also, WTF. How is it NOT Arthur's fault that he killed that boy? The hell? He couldn't have just knocked him out or something? Jeez, show, I really thought you were going to deal with this, but you didn't. I'm aware I'm hypersensitive on the issue now post-vidding but seriously. >:(

+ Ooh, Arthur/Gwen is so epic, I am really sold on the way they did it in this episode. It was complicated and messy and adorkable and Arthur is an idiot but it's also powered by all the mythology. THE ONCE AND FUTURE QUEEN, INDEED. <3333333333 forever.

+ AGH GOD I HATE LEECHES SO FUCKING MUCH, THAT'S NOT FUNNY. D: (I had a traumatic experience hiking through the jungles of Vietnam.)

+ So, wow. Not a SINGLE line for Morgana. See, okay, this is exactly why I am ever so slightly annoyed at the minority of Arthur/Merlin monoshippers (because I do love most of you very much) who are fretting about Arthur/Gwen. I mean, Arthur & Merlin's relationship is so safe, so central to the show, and I totally heart it and would love it if the show went that way and everything, but we know it won't. Whereas, Gwen/Morgana? Could really easily just vanish the way it did here. Why didn't we get scenes where Gwen was trying and kind of failing to not tell Morgana 'OMG ARTHUR IS SLEEPING IN MY HOUSE HE IS UNBEARABLE YET STRANGELY ATTRACTIVE', or whatever? I am so afraid we'll get separate Gwen & Morgana episodes and they'll just drop their relationship at some point down the line because it's not seen as important to the series. And, well, :(.

+ But on the whole I really loved this - I LOVED Gwen, you may have noticed, and yeah, *this* is more or less how I'd like to see Arthur/Gwen handled. Also, Arthur/Gwen/Merlin could not have *been* more OT3 here - all their little smiles at each other! ♥

eta: ALSO HOLY SHIT THE PREVIEW A;DSLKAJDS;LKJASD;LK WANT. WANT NOW. OMG.

Yep, that's pretty much how I feel. I don't care for Arthur/Gwen as one true love but this is alright, this I can arrange myself with. (And honestly, Arthur/Gwen/Merlin is going to be future canon, right?)

I missed Morgana and her relationship with Gwen :( Clearly they were trying to ungay it from every direction.

You know, my hope springs eternal. I know they promised a lot and already went back on a good number of those things but I'm hoping there's some truth to what they said about Morgana and Gwen becoming closer as friends. I miss that.

I really liked the way they handled the Arthur/Gwen! Gwen is so awesome. :D

I had the exact same thought! I was like, "Um, what happened to her father's stuff?" But out of all the things I can go after, that's definitely minor on my list.

Okay, so did Myror just RANDOMLY DIE FROM FALLING OVER? I mean, what. Excuse me while I retcon that. He was way too awesome to die! Also, that was totally unnecessary, STOP KILLING ALL THE BAD GUYS AND THE BLACK DUDES, SHOW.

I didn't think he was dead, but really, they left it so vague that it was impossible to tell. I understand that Arthur being less of a prat was supposed to be the main focus, but couldn't they spare five seconds to say if Myror was dead or not? And if he was, YES STOP KILLING ALL THE AWESOME. If not, he could totally come back and menace Arthur later!

I am so afraid we'll get separate Gwen & Morgana episodes and they'll just drop their relationship at some point down the line because it's not seen as important to the series.

I'm beginning to fear that myself. I was so disappointed that they didn't have any interactions despite the hugging incident from the last episode (which I'm still replaying in my head, by the way). BUT NEXT EPISODE DO WANT.

Also, WTF. How is it NOT Arthur's fault that he killed that boy?

I agree, they can't just bring it up and dismiss the concept entirely. We don't know the circumstances of the duel, but from the way it sounded, Arthur could have backed off. Of course, if they showed the duel at all, it probably would have been like "Arthur pulls back and the boy rushes him anyway" or something. This show has a lot of things, but depth isn't usually one of them.

This is what I thought as I was watching too. I loved this episode and I loved the Arthur/Gwen and the OT3 and I can't wait for the Morgana episode but I was also distressed that the girls didn't even talk to each other and, like you said, it wasn't even that they'd had a falling out or anything, just that it wasn't addressed because someone didn't see it as important.

I LOVED THIS EPISODE THOUGH. THE ARTHUR/GWEN WAS SO MUCH MORE EPIC AND AWESOME THAN I THOUGHT IT WOULD BE.

I would just like to second everything, basically.

I mean, I loved the episode (in large part because my sister and I watched it 'together' & made fun of Hannah Montana Arthur a lot), but yeah. Definitely not cool with the lack of Morgana & Gwen/Morgana (like, seriously, they weren't even sitting together at the tournament, what the hell?).

Um, but yes. GWEN IS FIERCE AND I ADORE HER. And poor Merlin, I just wanted to cuddle him so badly. Also, I just. SHIP EVERYONE. And Arthur attempting to cook, even though it only lasted two minutes, was hysterical.

I hope Gwen is wearing one of Morgana's dresses, because the universal canonical clothes-sharing would be wonderful. I only wish Morgana had been around to partake of the ot3 goodness. Gwen and Merlin were so adorable watching their boy growing up, and I would have loved to have had Morgana not so left out of the whole dynamic.

As to Tom's bed, I reckon Gwen's got rid of anything that might remind her too much of his loss. We already know from last season that she was determined to get on with things rather than wallow.

That would suck. :( The lack of Morgana in this episode made me sad. I NEED GWEN/MORGANA FIC TO MAKE IT BETTER.

I agree that the Arthur/Gwen was handled pretty well on a purely emotional level -- they seemed to have some real chemistry between them, at least. I'm a little annoyed though, because Gwen's role seems to be simply to make Arthur a better person -- all her character development is in aid of HIS character development. And I think that's another important reason that the show shouldn't start skimping on the Gwen/Morgana interactions -- because Gwen and Morgana don't have that sort of dynamic.

There needs to be fic! I mean, Morgana needs her Gwen during the night to cuddle her when she's having bad dreams!

I agree with basically everything you said; I loved the Arthur/Gwen in this episode, but I want my Morgana/Gwen too :( Still, the amount of sheer adorableness and Gwen-awesomeness in this episode nearly made up for it, I suppose, and I'm so looking forward to next week ♥

Much as I loved the ep, I could not agree with this more. I've just seen it happen on too many other shows. I'm clinging to the hope that Angel and Katie were right in the interview when they said that Gwen and Morgana get closer this season. I'm really clinging to that and trying to give it some time before I get upset.

Just...seriously. Don't do it to me writers, not with my girls.

UM, BASICALLY YES. *FLAILS*

i've seen people really upset with the arthur/guinevere (ugh ugh he said her name SO MANY TIMES, AMY. IS THIS MY NEW KINK?) in this episode, and i can understand how it felt rushed in the first ep. but this? no, this was lovely. idk maybe they're coming from an OMG OTP AND OTP ONLY~ standpoint, but i look at it like this: they've got one more series here they're certain of (S2), and they have to tell these stories in a limited number of episodes. there can't be a slow build of arthur/gwen, no matter how lovely it could actually be, because they aren't sure what kind of future timeline they've got. or maybe i'm just rambling and trying to justify it because I LOVED IT SO IN THIS EP. *sparkly hearts*

and less than halfway through i said to myself 'NEEDS MOAR MORGANA', so i am so very looking forward to next week's episode!! :D

They did the Arthur/Gwen very well in this episode, and Gwen did rock. I just can't shake the feeling that Merlin and Gwen both deserve WAY better than Arthur. Because he is a ginormous prat. And, sure, he was being nice to Gwen this episode, but you could see that what she was trying to tell him really wasn't getting through to him, because he was still treating Merlin like utter shit. I guess I am just very sensitive to the way that Merlin never gets his recognition and Gwen and Morgana and Gaius are basically the only people who are even nice to him, ever. *sigh* My poor little Merlin.

Episodes like this make me wish Gwen, Merlin, and Morgana would ride off into the sunset and leave Arthur behind to be a prat on his own. I realize that my Arthur dislike is probably pretty unpopular, but I can't help it! The first two episodes of this season he has just been unbearable.

In other news, I am also quite nervous about Morgana/Gwen. I hope they will get some screen time together this season. :(

Here is my theory: Gwen's old house belonged to the smithy the same way a rectory belongs to the church. When Gwen's father was killed, she didn't get to live in their old house anymore because the new smith and his family get to live in it. Of course, Morgana made sure she got another house, didn't just get kicked out.

I loved this episode so hard and cannot wait for next week.
