Vid Commentary: Suzanne

Suzanne Vid Commentary
by [personal profile] purplefringe and [personal profile] such_heights

An audio commentary for my Doctor/TARDIS vid Suzanne, probably best summarised as look at his face. (We talk about other things too, but that's a definite theme.) This is also a pretty accurate summation of what a great deal of our conversations are like all the time. Fangirl radio!

such heights: Hello, this is an audio commentary for the vid Suzanne, I'm such heights.

purplefringe: And I'm purplefringe, and this is a vid for meee!

such heights: Yay! So, we're going to talk a little bit about the vid was made, and hopefully this will be interesting for people who enjoyed the final project. Phoebe, if you'd like to start off by explaining how this began?

purplefringe: Well, Amy promised me a vid for my birthday, which was basically the most exciting thing ever, and then after episode 6.04, The Doctor's Wife, aired I decided that the one thing I wanted in the entire world was a Doctor/TARDIS vid and I decided that the song Suzanne would clearly be the perfect song for this vid.

such heights: So that was exciting! I'd heard it before but I didn't know the song very well, then I got this really excited email from Phoebe being all 'ahh! You have to listen to this song!'. So I did, and it was indeed perfect! I always think Leonard Cohen is a really interesting person to vid, because there's a lot of nuance and interesting lyrical metaphors and stuff. So it was a really fun project! I'm happy with the results.

purplefringe: And I am just ridiculously flaily, which unfortunately may not come across on a commentary because you can't see my hands flailing.

such heights: So we're now going to play the vid slowed down, and talk about some of the segments through it, and hopefully this will be interesting! Just going to start it up - 'for Phoebe', aww.

purplefringe: Yay! Aw, and there's the Doctor marrying the TARDIS.

such heights: Yeah, see I hadn't quite thought about it like that until you said it, but I think it's adorable.

purplefringe: Well, she's his wife!

such heights: She is! I know, it's so great. And here he's all twirling around, and they're twirling through space. I really went for the twirls and the jumps as much as possible.

purplefringe: You really did! Well, I love it, this is the joy of their relationship, and the mystery, right here.

such heights: Yes. Well, what was interesting is that when the Doctor's in the TARDIS he's obviously quite flaily and it's all very fast-paced, so clips like this I had to really slow down to fit the pace of the song. Otherwise it's a bit of a whirligig, which isn't quite what you want. So it's happy but a bit more sedate than usual.

purplefringe: Whirligig is a very good word to describe the Doctor.

such heights: I think so.

purplefringe: Oh, that face, when he's looking at up her right there.

such heights: I know. He loves her so much. Yes, so lots of twirling, big into the twirling.

purplefringe: Lots of gazing deep into the TARDIS's - well, eyes if she had any. Oh, this bit is one of my favourite bits in the vid, the simultaneously looking into and out of the TARDIS as she protects him, and feeds him tea and oranges, metaphorically.

such heights: Yes, and look at his face. I can't deal with his face. It's a great vid from that point of view, it's just 'look at his face' all the time. And then these are all the moments when they're separated as the TARDIS loses energy or power or has her life sucked out of her, and it's all very sad. But, but, look!

purplefringe: She gets you on her wavelength!

such heights: Yes. So Idris suddenly embodies the TARDIS. This is the point of view change in the vid, which some commenters seemed to quite enjoy. I had to really slow this down.

purplefringe: That was beautiful, the zoom on his face just there.

such heights: Because look at his face. I may be saying that a lot, but seriously. So, yes, suddenly this shifts from the Doctor to the TARDIS being in control and being more of an actual character in the vid, which is really nice.

purplefringe: And they just want to travel together.

such heights: They do.

purplefringe: And they trust each other. I love this bit, I think there's a lyric going on about trust here, and how the Doctor and the TARDIS trust each other in the same way that River trusts the Doctor and the Doctor trusts River.

such heights: Yes. And River trusts the TARDIS and the TARDIS loves River, and they're all married in space, so that's lovely.

Yay, more spinning around, and then ooh, we're coming up to my favourite shot in the vid, because look look look, you guys, I made it go black and white! I was so excited when I managed to find out how to do that.

purplefringe: *laughs* Aw, and then we have Jesus.

such heights: And then we have Jesus, who's William Hartnell. So there you go.

purplefringe: And is also Tom Baker, Colin Baker, and everyone else.

such heights: So this was a challenge, because classic series Who is variable in terms of quality of source and also very static, so it was a case of trying to blend it all together so that it didn't look really jarring.

purplefringe: I think you did this bit really well, I think I commented to you in my initial flaily email that you chose lots of shots were the background was moving, where the TARDIS was sort of moving around them.

such heights: Yeah, well what I found is that there were some clips that were more similar. So these are all the companions being awesome, because I felt like it was really important to have the companions really involved in this vid sa well. Because obviously it's the epic love story of the Doctor and the TARDIS, but the companions are always involved in that. Especially the ones that can fly the TARDIS better than him, like Romana.

purplefringe: Mm-hmm. And probably most of them, if they actually had a chance to fly the TARDIS.

such heights: Yeah. Well I love the end of [personal profile] usuallyhats's companions vid, when they all fly the TARDIS, that's really cool.

purplefringe: Going back to this - this whole bit was amazing.

such heights: Aw, Nine, bless your face.

purplefringe: Bless your face, and bless your brokenness and you are the one with a broken TARDIS that just becomes a box again, and that's so sad.

such heights: I know. And I like this bit, I like the idea that he just sort of surrenders himself to the TARDIS. I like this idea of regenerating inside the TARDIS. Slowing this bit down - yeah, I love the expression on David Tennant's face here. And this bit's adorable, he's like 'look! I found a bit of TARDIS! And I'm going to smile really big in a second!'

purplefringe: Yeah, look at that grin. And the TARDIS is just going to look after poor Nine and Ten, because bad things happen to them.

such heights: Yes. Because he trusts the TARDIS to look after Rose, which is important.

purplefringe: And to look after him.

such heights: Yes. Aw, look at his face! For god's sake, it's so sad. And then this was a really nice pan, this is from the end of Girl in the Fireplace.

purplefringe: That shot just felt like it's caressing the outside of the TARDIS.

such heights: And look, the TARDIS saves the Earth!

purplefringe: And then we get right back to the little micro story that's at the heart of this, from the big epicness of towing the Earth we get back to the Doctor and Idris.

such heights: Well, it's kind of out of chronological order because also kind of in it as well, I didn't really mess around with it too much. But you just go back in time and then come back to the present.

purplefringe: I like that - it builds up and up and up and all of the epicness comes in and then it goes back down to the quiet story.

such heights: Well, I just felt that it was important to give it context

purplefringe: 'Salvation army counters'.

such heights: Yeah. All the dead TARDISes and all the dead Time Lords, oh dear.

purplefringe: Oh, this is such a beautiful moment.

such heights: Yeah, this shot was just amazing. The special effects in this episode were really, really great, and I got excited getting to use this stuff as well.

purplefringe: This is the TARDIS taking the Doctor where he needs to go.

such heights: Yes, yes it is.

purplefringe: Oh, and here we have the heroes in the seaweed, and the children in the morning.

such heights: It was very important to me that Martha was on the 'heroes' bit.

purplefringe: Absolutely, I did notice that! And Rose is a child.

such heights: Rose and Amy are the children, and Donna and Martha are the heroes. Which, you know, are interchangeable. So these are their angsty TARDIS moments.

purplefringe: 'Leaning out for love'.

such heights: Yeah. Oh, River. Rory. *laughs* I tried to make it look a bit more serious than it really is, that clip. And then I liked interspersing these two, because I think Amy and Rose maybe have the most interesting connections to the TARDIS out of all of the New Who companions. Oh, and then this scene is so gorgeous and so sad, and basically I didn't have to do anything. I just clipped it and put it on the timeline.

purplefringe: And then made everybody cry. You're a bad person, Amy.

such heights: Yeah, yeah I know. Look at his face.

purplefringe: I am looking at his face! Look at their faces! Everybody has a face.

such heights: And it's sad. And then, ah, this shot, which is amazing, and it goes on forever. As a vidder, that's always joy, because you can just keep using it.

purplefringe: They're touching each other with their minds.

such heights: And then gradually the Doctor gets all excited.

purplefringe: Right back to the beginning, spinning around again.

such heights: And then they fly through space together, married and happy and in love. Aw.

purplefringe: And that is the blissful story of the Doctor and the TARDIS and their epic love.

such heights: Yes, yes it is. So, yeah! I'm really pleased with the vid, I'm glad that other people like it to - I like that you like it.

purplefringe: I just have no words for how much I like it, really.

such heights: It was a lot of fun to do. And I think it's really nice, because I think a lot of the vids that are about the Eleventh Doctor and that era tend not to use earlier footage, even from RTD Doctor Who. It was nice to tie everything together and say that look, it's all the same story.

purplefringe: It's all the same big, epic story.

such heights: Which I think is really present in The Doctor's Wife, this sense that he's the same person and the TARDIS is the same person.

purplefringe: Well, it was written by Neil Gaiman, who's a massive fanboy, so he wanted to include the whole story.

such heights: Exactly. He describes the episode as his piece of fanfiction, which is really nice.

purplefringe: Aw, it's just the cutest thing ever.

such heights: I know. And it was so pretty and it was really fun to vid. I don't have anything else particularly to say about it, apart from, you know, yay.

purplefringe: Yeah, yay pretty much sums it up, I think. Yay, coherency!

such heights: The Doctor and the TARDIS. The box and her thief. In space, forever. It's always you and her.

purplefringe: The mad box and the boy.

such heights: Hurray! Thank you for listening!

purplefringe: Thank you!
