+ Okay, I found the Arthur/Gwen section more than a little heavy-handed, BUT Gwen is awesome and sort of sceptical of Arthur still, so that's great. (Gwen is going to get plots that don't involve UST with Arthur, though, right?)

+ Nice play to get the Dragon back involved. Also, jeez, way to blackmail there, Dragon!

+ This episode is genuinely tense - I'm impressed, show!

+ You guys, Merlin loves Arthur so much. It's breaking my heart just a little here.

And end, complete with trailer of shiny goodness. So, that needed WAY more Gwen & Morgana (though I have already promised an episode coda in the Free-For-All, so I'll be getting on that now - it may be snuggle-based), but I did enjoy it very much. Mostly because Merlin is MADE OF CUTE (and wasn't even a little bit murderous in this, yay!) and I wish to hug him.

I just didn't get it! Arthur hasn't ever really noticed Gwen before, why would he all of sudden say something about how surprising she always is!? Bah.

Arthur was a big asshole. I was offended on Merlin's behalf. He needs to demand some RESPECT from his man.

Did you not see series 1 episode 10 (the one in Ealdor where she stood up to him twice) or episode 13 (where he teased her about what she said when she thought he was asleep)?

I so want them to do this right! Hopefully it'll pan out well over the season. Mostly I felt all affronted on Gwen's behalf - Arthur, sweetie, you are surprised that Gwen is awesome? After all this time, really?

I hear you on the Gwen needing more than a romance plot - but her stuff with Morgana was so genuine and lovely that it made up in goodness what it lacked in length, I think.

I think one of the main things I learned tonight is that collarbones are to Bradley as cheekbones are to Colin. JUST SAYING.

Also, pretty much YES to everything you wrote, and also PLEASE LET THERE BE SNUGGLE-BASED FIC BECAUSE UM, YES.

I think I was too impressed by the girls being AWESOME and Morgana basically telling Gaius to fuck off and Gwen saving Arthur's ungrateful ass to notice how heavy-handed the Arthur/Gwen was, buuttt, I was pretty much just like OTFOUUUUURRRR!! at that point anyway, because Merlin's whole unrequited love angst was also kind of heavy-handed. It's like, at this point, the only non-canon fanfic would be two-person het.

In conclusion: MORGANA & GWEN ARE BOTH THE LOVELIEST EVER, MORE GIRLS PLEASE, Arthur was a complete dick, MERLIN IS ADORABLE, & I LOVE THEM ALL. ALSO I LOVE THIS SHOW.

BASICALLY. This is the main reason why I am not at all phased that they're doing Arthur/Gwen this season - obviously, it is canon and destiny and whatnot, but also it is SO EASY to write with general OT4-ish ness, so yay.

Wasn't Mackenzie Crook fab? Poor hapless Merlin! They certainly went overboard filming Colin Morgan as ethereally beautiful and translucently-skinned, didn't they? He did a spine-tingling job maintaining the rage at the Great Dragon. Loved the look on his face when Gaius brought him up and how much it killed him to agree to a deal. Another reminder that it doesn't do to make an enemy of Merlin, though your quite well sorted if he's on your side. I like that his errors are of being too straightforward and not nearly as cunning as Cedric or the Great Dragon.

OMG yes. It was quite fun in this episode that Arthur and Morgana both clearly expect Merlin and Gwen to be outside their doors all night. Though Cedric did give us one lovely new bit of canon - 'I'll just be in the anteroom'!! Hi, anteroom, I expect to see a lot of you in coming fan fiction.

I do quite like her politely exasperated 'would you like me to stop that bleeding or are you just going to blather on?' look. He's all 'I shall favour you with my condescension' and she's quivering with 'people dying! job to do!'

Gaius' care for Merlin is quite adorable and Tony Head was fantastic. He's got Uther on that that line between not evil but so completely wrong-headed.

Was it me, or did Gwen have a big grin on her face while she was 'comforting' Morgana? Those two got less screen time than I wanted, but I liked the way Morgana pitched in with tending the wounded.

I do wonder how structurally sound Camelot is these days. Especially as the dragon in the cave bit is from the bit of Geoffrey of Monmouth's Historia where the castle repeatedly falls down.

Arthur was a major jerk this episode, but I think it was all to justify the moment where he used Merlin to get on his horse. I loved it so much, and I can't explain why. ♥

Yes! I got kind of wibbly happy with the way he kept defending Arthur, even as Arthur was being so mean. It does worry me, though. If Merlin were a female character getting this sort of treatment, I'd probably be horribly offended.

Oh man, so much more. But the fact that they hugged just a few seconds into their first screen time for the season gave me high hopes!

Hee! Our show is back. Though did spend most of it thinking 'needs more girls' - seriously. There was a definite lack - though I sort of loved Morgana worrying that Gwen would be fed up of dealing with her problems and Gwen just being awesome.

Arthur was truly a prat this episode - I am not sure nearly dying has done him any good. Also, yep, the Gwen/Arthur was not well handled this time but guess we'll see. I'm hoping that it's just they're trying to clue in any new viewers - Arthur can be a prat, him and Gwen are sort of attracted, Morgana is troubled, Merlin is powerful and unloved...

Couldn't help laughing at the sheer number of topless Bradley shots they managed to work in though - am thinking fanservice. Also giggling was had at the fact that Arthur has all the boys fighting over him.

Eee... I loved Merlin in a heartbreaking sort of way. He's so ridiculously in love with Arthur and should totally slap him. I hurt for him so much and Colin is such an awesome actor. *sigh*
