Month of Awesome Women: Katara (Avatar: the Last Airbender)

"Oh, you better remember me like your life depends on it!"

Katara

This show is wonderful for its huge range of female characters, and Katara is the first one I fell in love with. She's brave and stubborn and has a hard-earned dignity beyond her years. She doesn't tolerate crap from anyone, especially when she knows they think less of her just because she's a girl, but she's also gloriously compassionate.

I love how her journey to power is just as important as Aang's, and the way we see her changing feelings about being stood next to a prodigy whilst she's doing the best she can. But given time and the right support she grows immensely confident and powerful, and it's a joy to watch. It leads to a darkness in her, too, and I love the way the show gently explores it.

She is frequently both the leader and the mother of the ground, and I like that they combine the two rather than insisting that the leader must be a boy and the nurturer must be a girl. Katara is more determined and focused than any of them on getting them all through this in one piece, and thank goodness for that.

She's a fantastic hero and a great example of a female character on a children's show - as are Toph and Suki and Ty Lee and all the rest. <3

Note: this is a WIP but it's already extremely long and extremely good. And I actually just realised that it's recently been updated, hurrah!

Without her, Avatar: The Last Airbender won't be the same.
mercredigirl: Supergirl (Kara) from DC Comics, floating in a blue sky with birds circling her. She is bending and her arms are raised. (Supergirl in flight)

I love [personal profile] damkianna's story so much, too! I've just been squeeing at [personal profile] damkianna about the bits I love the most, which include but are not limited to (1) competent and active female characters, especially the Fire Nation soldiers; (2) disability as matter-of-fact aspect of life; (3) SOUTHEAST ASIA REPRESENT because there are Vietnamese philosophers.

The original series was good, but this is so much better.

Katara rocks.

I hate people who hate her. They just don't understand her like we fans of hers do.

I just hate that Toph for being such a jerk.
