Vividcon Report 2010
Short version: I hung out with a lot of great people, saw some wonderful vids and enjoyed myself very much.
Long version!
Thursday:
avendya and I fail at trip planning, and only realised a couple of days in advance that we were going to have to leave to catch our flight at 5.30 am. So we started the con already sleep-deprived! And in a rather charming coincidence, we ended up being on the flight next to fellow attendee
faos.
It was lovely to meet a whole bunch of people that first evening, with much checking of badges and excited flaily sounds when I recognised usernames of folks on my rlist and vidders I love. I had a particularly hilarious moment with
bop_radar whereby we'd got talking pre-registration and clearly neither of us had parsed the other's usernames, because we both didn't actually click who the other person was until we got our badges, having been talking for a good few minutes. *facepalm*
Friday:
History of Vidding: I enjoyed this more than I was expecting! A lot of older vids pass me by because they tend to be about North American shows that were somewhat before my time, but I found the vidshow atmosphere made it easier for me to enjoy vids about the Sentinel etc. There was also a fabulous SG-1 vid and a great multifandom vid called Data's Dream, aw. (I will make a recs post of things I liked separately, as I am typing this without internet and can't get the links right now.)
In Soviet Russia, Vid Edits You: I really enjoyed this panel, where
hollywoodgrrl was talking about Soviet filmmaking techniques and showing us ways in which the style of that era was very similar to a lot of the ways in which vidders edit now. I also found it useful as a way to put words and specific descriptions to vidding techniques, which is something that happened to me a lot at the con. I like it when there's a name for that thing I'm doing!
Identity: A really interesting show, and I especially enjoyed Fabella's Harry Potter vid, And The Boy Was A Puppet, which was new to me. This was also the first occasion where one of my vids was showing, and I only freaked out a little bit. Considering that Butterflies and Hurricanes was a pretty early vid, I was happy with how well it seemed to stand up to the rest of the show. Yay, I don't suck! *g*
Nearly New: This was a lovely mix of seeing beloved vids on a big screen and getting introduced to some brand new vids.
Club Vivid: WAS AWESOME. I cosplayed as Amy Pond and had star stickers all over my face and there were glowsticks. :D Dancing to vids is a really fun experience, and the mix of old favourites and new shiny things was lovely. I was especially thrilled by
rhoboat's Ashes to Ashes/Life on Mars vid,
damned_colonial's Age of Sail women are awesome vid, and
trelkez's fantastic multi-era Doctor Who vid. (That one made me so happy by the time Eleventy showed up I started bouncing up and down. Um. >.>)
Saturday:
Race and Representation vidshow & panel: This was a highlight of the con for me. The vidshow was completely fantastic, the whole playlist is worth checking out and it had a really great structure and flow to it. The ensuing discussion was both thoughtful and thought-provoking, and I'm pretty sure I could listen to
talitha78 and
deepad talk about race in vidding all day, they did a great job.
Unusual POV: this vidshow required some actual brain effort and I think I missed what the POV actually was on some of the vids, but there were some really good ones here.
trelkez's Weeping Angels vid had me clutching at my seat, and this was the first time I'd seen
sdwolfpup's Fix You properly, which was fabulous. (The Cylons just want to fix humanity, guys! By, er, blowing them up.)
Motion: I really enjoyed
cherryice's panel, she had some great examples and it made me want to play around more with motion in my own vids. Also, I learned a new term or two, which is a thing that I like.
We're Here, We're Queer: And then it was my show! This is the full playlist, although unfortunately Air is currently offline and I haven't been able to get in touch with the vidder. It seemed to go over well, which was a huge relief. I'd like to let the collection of vids speak for themselves as much as possible, because my intentions in selecting them and ordering them are only one interpretation, but I would be interested in any feedback people who attended had about what they took away from the show. Hopefully the audience at least got to enjoy seeing some really shiny vids.
Premieres: So this was ALL THE VIDS, omg. There were an awful lot of vids for small fandoms, some of which were more accessible to me than others. My particular favourites at the time were
some_stars's Star Trek vid, I Just Can't Wait To Be King - this started the vidshow and watching it with a large audience all howling with laughter was really great -
danegen's multifandom Around the Bend about women drivers/bikers/pilots,
astolat's Morgana vid Watershed and
laurashapiro's Stay Awake, about women being forced into various mystical and magical pregnancies - disturbing and super effective. I am sure there are plenty more vids I will go back to and be able to parse better once I can space them out some more!
Evening: So after thoroughly embarrassing myself at vid karaoke (
avendya and I somehow decided it would be a good idea to sing Adam Lambert's For Your Entertainment), I ended up at a fannish charades room party, which was so funny I think I hurt things.
toft performing
chagrined's Merlin/Arthur enema fic Clysterfuck with a beer bottle was a glory only equalled by
deepad's take on Jamie Hyneman: BDSM sex god. This is what happens when you are playing with prompts written by the
kink_bingo mods and associates.
Sunday:
I didn't attend much actual programming on the last day - for reasons I will come onto in a minute - but it was nice to have the chance just to hang out with people.
damned_colonial taught me some Final Cut vidding tricks that I'm looking forward to trying out!
It was also fun being there when
were_duck could finally reveal her surprise of the weekend which was omg unexpected
general_jinjur, voice of a thousand podfics, and listening in on her conversations with various people was pretty great.
I did go to the Calls from the Public panel, which leads me nicely into accessibility.
Okay, so. Roughly as I said at the time, here's what happened: I emailed the concom quite a long time in advance of the con asking for information about vids dealing with issues of sexual violence/had consent issues etc. I started receiving information a week in advance of the con, but a lot of it ended up being pretty last minute - Club Vivid was touch and go for me for a while, and I ended up not being able to attend Challenge or Auction. The rush of the whole thing was kind of stressful for everyone involved, and so it is my hope that going forward the concom will be able to collect information further in advance and make it easier to access for people who want it.
On a plus note, mad props to however made those delicious diabetic-friendly baked goods, NOM.
And that was my con! I hope I get to go again sometime. Recs to come at the weekend, probably. Off to go explore Chicago some more now, having had an excellent time at the Field Museum yesterday with
bop_radar and
talitha78/

That's of course from the perspective I had in being on the vid tech side which is as always a lot of work. Ultimately we need to know what gaps we need filling in what we provide for attendees and, vitally, get the help we need to provide that so thank you for letting us know how we can improve.
