Doctor Who poll!

I think we can sum up my state of mind over the last two days (namely feverish and furious refreshing of flist and Twitter) by saying that I just popped over to who_anon for kicks. Um. Anyway, they were talking about the companion in the latest episode, and blah blah blah -- my favourite was the cries of 'elitism!', what? -- but I got to wondering about the most popular one-off companions (for a generous value of companion that includes Elton and Sally), and companions generally. Thus: poll! I'd imagine we can assume spoilers for 'Planet of the Dead' in the comments.

[Poll #1382954]

This post on Dreamwidth. Fyi: you can vote over there with OpenID if you so wish, and I'll be interested to see how the results turn out!

These are difficult questions! It's really almost a tie between Sally and Astrid, and really almost a tie between Donna and Martha, usually depending on which episodes I've seen most recently.

Sally was my favorite of the one-off companions, no contest there, and it was largely for the same reasons Donna was my favorite regular companion: she was an ordinary girl, inteligent if not studious, a bit frivolous at time, but ultimately and ordinary girl with a whole lot of will power who dominated, if I may borrow a phrase from my high school days.

I picked Sally because Elton and Rosita don't feel like companions to me; Astrid would have been good, except the character had to die, so she fueled the Doctor's emo; and Jackson and Christina were good but didn't really catch me. Also, Sally approaching the Doctor at the end, when he hasn't met her yet? I loved that.

I picked Rose because when I really think about it, I like 9 more than 10, and the Rose that was around with 9 was awesome.

I'm the only one who's voted for Astrid so far. :( I can't even explain why I liked her, but I did. If I had to pick a second, it'd be Elton, for sure.

And I voted for Rose as my favorite companion, but Donna is a very very close second. I'm just more sentimental about Rose because she was my first companion, but I do love Donna (I even loved her in The Runaway Bride when most people were iffy on her).

Your post came up at almost exactly the same time, and I could have almost written it! I voted for Astrid too, and loved Donna right from Runaway Bride - Rose was my first though, and I will always love her the most of the nuskool companions. :D

[identity profile] fauxkaren.livejournal.com 2009-04-13 10:27 pm (UTC)(link)
:D

Oh man, if we're adding OldSchool companions to the mix, I don't even know what I'd do. Because I love Romana I (yeah, I'm weird. I like Romana I more than Romana II) and I love Ace... but ROSE... and DONNNA! I'd just run around in indecision.

[identity profile] livii.livejournal.com 2009-04-13 10:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I picked Astrid but I loved Rosita too, I just loved Astrid more; and Rose is my all-time favourite companion, but Donna is soooo squeaky close, and Mickey is hot on her heels. Hard questions!

[identity profile] eschatologies.livejournal.com 2009-04-13 10:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I can't pick a favorite female companion, so I picked Captain Jack instead. I like them all for different reasons, and I dislike them all for different reasons! You know!

But...Sally Sparrow FTW.

I swithered for ages between Sally and Rosita, and then plumped for Sally as I just read fic with Sally in half an hour ago - reminding me of my epic Blink love. Not that Christina isn't awesome, (I'm not writing Christina and Donna adventure fic at all) with her flying bus and all... Speaking of such, why is there not more fic of the fabulous one off characters from the show?

Sorry SJS pawns everyone else ever for me (except Ace obv) but to be honest, its probably a good thing that you used radio buttons rather than ticky boxes as I cannot choose and would have ticked everyone ever.

Sally wins favourite one-off companion, not a doubt about it. Blink is by far my favourite episode of DW, so I guess it's to do with that. But in all honesty, I don't really think there's any competition for her, really. I didn't much like the other episodes wit one-off companions. I'm not a fan of the Doctor on his own, I guess.

Now, favourite companion- that's tough. I like Rose best with the Doctor (and mainly Ten), they're just the two that worked best and had the best chemistry. If I had to pick one of them that's my favourite by themselves, I'd probably have to say Martha, but only after season three. That whole "pining for the Doctor"-thing really made me hate her, but once she got over that, she was the most kickass person EVER- especially in Torchwood. (And this, I swear, has nothing to do with girlcrushing on Freema Agyeman like a madwoman. Not at all.) I really like Donna, I love her and I think it's fantastic the Doctor finally found an equal in her, but I don't know. I still like Rose and Martha just a tiny, teensy bit better.

Sorry 'bout the semi-essay o.0 Didn't mean to do that.

For that first poll, it's so hard to choose between Jackson Lake and Sally Sparrow. Eventually, I picked Sally.

[identity profile] prettyquotable.livejournal.com 2009-04-13 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I HAD SUCH A HARD TIME PICKING BETWEEN ELTON AND SALLY. But she won me over because I just watched Blink the other day again and she is indeed made of epic win.

[identity profile] sabrinafair2.livejournal.com 2009-04-14 10:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I was the same way. Elton is pretty awesome, but he never really interacted with the Doctor as much as the others. I wish they would bring him back for a small cameo or something.

[identity profile] builtofsorrow.livejournal.com 2009-04-13 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I picked Sally, because she is, but I did waver when I saw Rosita. I did love her a lot. I would love for the next regular companion to be very much like Rosita.

& I voted Jack because even though Martha Jones is probably my favourite female character on telly ever, Doctor/Jack is clearly the ultimate OTP, and there's just nothing like the two of them together. Donna is very close in there too, but yeah.

Also, I came to conclusion that I love Lady Christina on her own, but I really just didn't see any chemistry between her and Ten. I think if I'd seen her in a Doctor-lite episode the likes of Blink, I would've been much more enthusiastic about her. Which does bring up the question re. Sally if she'd actually been with the Doctor for extended periods of time... but no, no, I'm sticking with her.

[identity profile] kel-reiley.livejournal.com 2009-04-14 03:36 am (UTC)(link)
i voted sally sparrow, b/c i think that is also my fave dw episode ever
and donna, b/c well... it's DONNA (i need a donna icon)

[identity profile] kel-reiley.livejournal.com 2009-04-14 09:19 pm (UTC)(link)
that's so weird - usually i'm not
YAY!

[identity profile] lorannah.livejournal.com 2009-04-14 07:14 am (UTC)(link)
OK - honestly, didn't look at your answers until I posted mine - not copying you or anything.

But this was cruel. I always hate choosing between Martha and Donna anyway, but I really adored Elton, Rosita and Christina. In the end I picked Christina because she is new and shiny, has a flying bus, fits best into the companion role and is the first that I've really wished was becoming the proper companion.

I think I'm a little unusual in Who fandom though because neither Sally or Astrid actually worked for me.

[identity profile] lorannah.livejournal.com 2009-04-14 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Indeed we are.

It's not that I really disliked them (although Astrid did annoy me), they're both likable, I was just extremely disinterested in both of them, nothing about their story dragged me in. Of course, that would probably have been different if they'd been intended as long term companions.

I think I've seen in interviews that both characters were written as 'ideal' companions - which is particularly obvious with Astrid, to the extent that she has nothing to tie her to home or anything - but it's the complications that interest me and the ways characters change and develop.

So with Rose it was all about her empowerment (particularly in the first season) and with Martha I think it was about fulfilling her curiosity and with Donna it was about showing her her own awesome (grrr at finale). But Astrid and Sally were already there, and to me they didn't seem to really grow in their episodes.

But yep probably would have been different if they were on for longer. With Christina I really, really wanted to know how she would have developed.

Err... sorry that was rambly.

I honestly could not choose between Martha, Sarah Jane, and Mickey! However if I could pick any guest character to return, it would be Lynda with a Y - seriously, she is number one on my 'Companions who weren't' list. Hee :)

Does Sally count as a one-off? Either way I voted for her because, well, it's Sally ♥

It would be cool if you included a Classic!Who companions part of the poll, but otherwise interesting results :3

[identity profile] anoel.livejournal.com 2009-04-19 02:24 am (UTC)(link)
I've been bored by all the other one off companions but I loved Lady Christina so I was super happy.
