Doctor Who poll!
I think we can sum up my state of mind over the last two days (namely feverish and furious refreshing of flist and Twitter) by saying that I just popped over to who_anon for kicks. Um. Anyway, they were talking about the companion in the latest episode, and blah blah blah -- my favourite was the cries of 'elitism!', what? -- but I got to wondering about the most popular one-off companions (for a generous value of companion that includes Elton and Sally), and companions generally. Thus: poll! I'd imagine we can assume spoilers for 'Planet of the Dead' in the comments.
[Poll #1382954]
This post on Dreamwidth. Fyi: you can vote over there with OpenID if you so wish, and I'll be interested to see how the results turn out!

I picked Rose because when I really think about it, I like 9 more than 10, and the Rose that was around with 9 was awesome.

Haha, I hear you.
Aww, Nine&Rose. S1 has such lovely nostalgia value, I find.

And I voted for Rose as my favorite companion, but Donna is a very very close second. I'm just more sentimental about Rose because she was my first companion, but I do love Donna (I even loved her in The Runaway Bride when most people were iffy on her).

Oh man, if we're adding OldSchool companions to the mix, I don't even know what I'd do. Because I love Romana I (yeah, I'm weird. I like Romana I more than Romana II) and I love Ace... but ROSE... and DONNNA! I'd just run around in indecision.

Kudos for you! I actually can't remember at this point, but I was definitely on board when they announced she was coming back. Most amusing to see everyone eat their words, we should trust the casting by now!

But...Sally Sparrow FTW.

Sorry SJS pawns everyone else ever for me (except Ace obv) but to be honest, its probably a good thing that you used radio buttons rather than ticky boxes as I cannot choose and would have ticked everyone ever.

I don't know! Which is why I make \o/ arms at you for possible adventure fic, yay!
Haha, yes - and there's a reason I didn't add classic companions too, sheesh.

Now, favourite companion- that's tough. I like Rose best with the Doctor (and mainly Ten), they're just the two that worked best and had the best chemistry. If I had to pick one of them that's my favourite by themselves, I'd probably have to say Martha, but only after season three. That whole "pining for the Doctor"-thing really made me hate her, but once she got over that, she was the most kickass person EVER- especially in Torchwood. (And this, I swear, has nothing to do with girlcrushing on Freema Agyeman like a madwoman. Not at all.) I really like Donna, I love her and I think it's fantastic the Doctor finally found an equal in her, but I don't know. I still like Rose and Martha just a tiny, teensy bit better.
Sorry 'bout the semi-essay o.0 Didn't mean to do that.

Mostly, I end up thinking that Donna is objectively the Most Awesome, but that Martha ended up with my favourite character arc, and that also I love Rose a lot. Tough indeed!

& I voted Jack because even though Martha Jones is probably my favourite female character on telly ever, Doctor/Jack is clearly the ultimate OTP, and there's just nothing like the two of them together. Donna is very close in there too, but yeah.
Also, I came to conclusion that I love Lady Christina on her own, but I really just didn't see any chemistry between her and Ten. I think if I'd seen her in a Doctor-lite episode the likes of Blink, I would've been much more enthusiastic about her. Which does bring up the question re. Sally if she'd actually been with the Doctor for extended periods of time... but no, no, I'm sticking with her.

I could very much get behind that, yes.
Yeah, choosing between Martha, Donna and Jack is always a struggle for me. And then I love Rose and Mickey and Sarah Jane lots too! Oh, decisions, why so hard. *g*

and donna, b/c well... it's DONNA (i need a donna icon)

YAY!

But this was cruel. I always hate choosing between Martha and Donna anyway, but I really adored Elton, Rosita and Christina. In the end I picked Christina because she is new and shiny, has a flying bus, fits best into the companion role and is the first that I've really wished was becoming the proper companion.
I think I'm a little unusual in Who fandom though because neither Sally or Astrid actually worked for me.

That is unusual! (Sally especially.) You know, it occurs me there really are very few characters I don't like on Who. I'm so easy.

It's not that I really disliked them (although Astrid did annoy me), they're both likable, I was just extremely disinterested in both of them, nothing about their story dragged me in. Of course, that would probably have been different if they'd been intended as long term companions.
I think I've seen in interviews that both characters were written as 'ideal' companions - which is particularly obvious with Astrid, to the extent that she has nothing to tie her to home or anything - but it's the complications that interest me and the ways characters change and develop.
So with Rose it was all about her empowerment (particularly in the first season) and with Martha I think it was about fulfilling her curiosity and with Donna it was about showing her her own awesome (grrr at finale). But Astrid and Sally were already there, and to me they didn't seem to really grow in their episodes.
But yep probably would have been different if they were on for longer. With Christina I really, really wanted to know how she would have developed.
Err... sorry that was rambly.

It would be cool if you included a Classic!Who companions part of the poll, but otherwise interesting results :3
