Recs + Dreamwidth

Merlin recs! (Totally biased: I beta'd one, the other was written for me. I love them both. :D)

A Terrible Cost by [livejournal.com profile] lorannah
Merlin ; Merlin, Arthur, Gwen, Morgana, Nimueh ; PG-13
An alternate ending for Le Morte D'Arthur - basically based on the question of what would have happened if the other three members of the fantastic foursome had realised that Merlin was in danger and ridden out to the rescue...

It's entirely fitting for this canon that lots of excellent writers take parts of the story and rework and rewrite them. I really like [livejournal.com profile] lorannah's take on how the finale could have been. This makes excellent use of all of the cast and the theme at the heart of it is the idea that destiny is not written in the stone, that endings can be retold. The result is a very satisfying read of what might have been.

A thousand years later, Arthur finds Merlin again.

This is a lovely slice of future-fic - the recasting of each character really made me smile. The story's gorgeous, with images and references and quotations scattered throughout, and it veers between light-heartedness and grandeur in the best way.

Also, Dreamwidth! What gives? I only really heard about this today, and I've been reading up on it via this post and its links. It sounds shiny! My personal stance is that I am pro new, exciting things and places that would be good for fandom, but also anti leaving people behind. I think I'll be getting an account over there when I can and seeing how that goes. If there's content originating there that I'm interested in, I'll try and find a way to hang out on both sites, I suppose. What are the rest of you doing?

I've been hearing about Dreamwidth on and off for a while, and I'm going to get an account when I can since I really like their basic ideas and attitudes. (I already signed in using my LJ OpenID.) My LJ is probably still going to be my main hub, but a lot of my friends and resources have already jumped sites: both scans_daily and pornish_pixies are on IJ, for example. This just seems like further evolution of that concept, since it's popped up on my flist several times.

Come to think of it, I've been split between journal sites for years. Usually, LJ has been where my online friends go, and the others, like uJournal and GreatestJournal, have been occupied by my real-life friends. Huh.

hee! i am tempted by the Dreamwidth shiny (i hear interesting things about journal access, for one...), but will probably not actually jump ship unless forced, as i am lazy and most of you are here. exhibit A: my IJ is only used to back up writing at the moment. *g*

also, &hearts! i am surprised at the explosion of feedback on that story, haha, it is far beyond the norm for me.

I'm interested in Dreamwidth and will probably get an account. I don't know how much I'll use it or for what, but I'm curious to see how it develops.

well you know what i'm going to do. :p i just hope i can send my money to them somehow by then (unless someone gives me a code, which i doubt)

I haven't heard anything concrete before about Dreamwidth, but I am in favour of new and shiny.
I have completely failed to keep track of IJ, so I'm not sure how well I'd go with a whole another blog site. I will, however, be snagging my name when accounts go on sale, and I will try to use it, even if it's only as a way to archive my public-interest posts.

Thanks also for the recs.

I poked around a little, and it looks like you'll be able to do cross-posting from Dreamwidth accounts to here on LJ? Although I don't know how they'd get around things like posting comments and locked posts ... but I'm definitely with you on the YAY SHINY. Fandom's relationship with LJ seems to be becoming more and more tenuous, so even though I'm mostly out of fandom these days, I'd welcome something new to at least try out!
