hai guise!
* A week of technological disaster is at an end. \o/ Word, iTunes, VLC, Firefox, I have missed you all dearly, welcome back.
* There are some new people around these parts - hello!
* Consequently, a game! Previously seen at
penknife's, this looks fun, and suits my tendencies to do this sort of thing anyway:
Name a character or pairing from a fandom I'm familiar with, and I'll give you a song lyric (or possibly a line of poetry) that I think fits. If you felt inspired to write something using the quote as a prompt, I would not be unhappy.
Fandoms: HP, Good Omens, Doctor Who (new), Torchwood, SGA, SPN, Merlin, His Dark Materials, Firefly, or anything else you've seen me talk about.

Ianto:
So here we are reinventing the wheel
I'm shaking hands with a hurricane
It's a colour that I can't describe
It's a language I can't understand
Ambition, tearing out the heart of you
Carving lines into you
Dripping down the sides of you
We will not be the last.
-- 'The Pioneers', Bloc Party
Jack/Ianto:
As logic stands
You couldn't meet a man who's from the future
But logic broke as he appeared
He spoke about the future
"We're not gonna make it,"
He explained how the end will come
You and me were never meant to be part of the future
All we have is now
All we've ever had was now
-- 'All We Have Is Now', The Flaming Lips
James:
Come as you are, sweetheart, come as you are
You know you've got nothing to prove
I'll put you to bed, you can let it all go
You've been playing too rough lately
You burn too bright
You live too fast
This can't go on too long
You're a tragedy starting to happen.
-- 'Red', Elbow

Also, that Flaming Lips song sounds mighty cool.

It is! It is from the end of a concept album about pink robots.

Looking for someone to trust
Without a fight
I think that you came too soon
You're the honey and the moon
That lights up my night
But right now, everything you want is wrong
And right now, all your dreams are waking up
And right now, I wish that I could follow you
To the shores of freedom where no one lives.
-- 'Honey and the Moon', Joseph Arthur

There's a bottomless cry that is spinning
Interdimensional, hidden inside
Of these lights which I seem to be missing
Marching ahead to silent beats
Bumping into these dead machines
You can hear everything with me
You can win everyone but me
Gonna feel my way around you
And then you're gonna get down on your knees
And grow accustomed to the darkness
And see what you're supposed to see
Head up straight
I know what I'm doing
Head up straight
I know what I'm doing
I don't.

*grins* I finally got round to watching Torchwood - I've gone through both box sets over the last eight days. It's insanely awesome (or possibly awesomely insane - I'm not sure where the dividing line between the two lies).

And aw, Teyla. So many choices!
There's a million mouths to feed
And I've got everything I need
I'm breathing
And there's a hurting thing inside
But I've got everything to hide
I'm grieving
Hey hey, I saved the world today
Everybody's happy now
The bad thing's gone away
And everybody's happy now
The good thing's here to stay
Please let it stay.

So, hmmm... Donna/Martha as I am very excited about the Big Bang fic. And definitely Gwen/Morgana as it has to be done. Ummm... and Kaylee/Inara as well, because I've just finished Firefly, which is love, (though not Serenity) and I love these two together - also why do all the pairings I like in that show contradict each other???
no subject
Donna/Martha: (I found The Song for my big bang. I think. But this is a very important matter, clearly.)
I read the signs
I got all my stars aligned
My amulets, my charms
I set all my false alarms
So I'll be someone
Who won't be forgotten
I've got a question
And you've got the answer
I do a dance to make the rain come
Smile to keep the sky from falling down, down, down, down
Collect the love that I've been given
Build a nest for us to sleep in here.
-- 'All My Stars Aligned', St. Vincent
Gwen/Morgana:
When the dark wood fell before me
And all the paths were overgrown
When the priests of pride say there is no other way
I tilled the sorrows of stone
I did not believe because I could not see
Though you came to me in the night
When the dawn seemed forever lost
You showed me your love in the light of the stars.
-- 'Dante's Prayer', Loreena McKennitt
And for a change of pace, how about some poetry for Kaylee & Inara:
The fountains mingle with the river
And the river with the ocean,
The winds of heaven mix for ever
With a sweet emotion;
Nothing in the world is single,
All things by a law divine
In one another's being mingle -
Why not I with thine?
-- 'Love's Philosophy', Percy Shelley

And if you're in the mood to do another, then Regulus Black.

Morgana:
Cause you're working
Building a mystery
Holding on and holding it in
Yeah you're working
Building a mystery
And choosing so carefully
You woke up screaming aloud
A prayer from your secret god
You feed off our fears
And hold back your tears, oh.
-- 'Building A Mystery', Sarah McLachlan
Regulus:
Oh, can't anybody see
We've got a war to fight
Never found our way
Regardless of what they say
How can it feel this wrong
From this moment, how can it feel this wrong?
Storm in the morning light
I feel no more can I say
Frozen to myself
I got nobody on my side
And surely that ain't right.
-- 'Roads', Portishead

And Sirius/Remus, since I'm obvious like that.
no subject
Remus/Sirius, wow, so many - okay, here's one:
Your friends hold the lullabys
They watch the way the night lies
Soft sounds, heads like a radio
Hearts wrapped in blankets, laying low
You're cold, maybe you just miss the sun
You fall, feeling like it's just begun
So far keeping it together's been enough
Look up, the rain is falling
Looks like love.

Tom Milligan! & Tom/Martha, because I'm cliched. Also, Arthur, if you don't mind?
no subject
Tom:
And here I dreamt I was a soldier
And I marched the streets of Birkenau
And I recall in spring
The perfume that the air would bring
To the indolent town
Where the barkers call the moon down
The carnival was ringing loudly now
And just to lay with you
There's nothing that I wouldn't do
Save lay my rifle down.
-- 'Here I Dreamt I Was An Architect', The Decemberists
Tom/Martha:
Live a life less ordinary
Live a life extraordinary with me
Live a life less sedentary
Live a life evolutionary with me.
Well I hate to be a bother,
But it's you and there's no other, I do believe
You can call me naive but I know me very well
(at least as far as I can tell)
And I know what I need.
The night you came into my life
Well it took the bones of me
You blew away my storm and strife
And shook the bones of me.
-- 'Life Less Ordinary', Carbon Leaf
Arthur:
Top of the fold, toast of the town, everyone stops when you come around
They hold their breath for you
Heroes are born, idols are made
We're all fools for this factory fame and you've got the brand new face
You've got the brand new face, golden boy.
Beauty untamed, stupid and wild; poster boy, you're society's child
Cut your teeth, cut your mouth, cut it out
Meteor rise from obscurity
All it took was a killing spree and the whole world was lying at your feet
Golden boy.
-- 'Golden Boy', Natalie Merchant.

Well, someone's gotta get to the obvious, so John/Rodney? Or Owen. I could be down with Owen.
Or Kaylee. Or Mickey. Ignore the cut text. I AM INDECISIVE AND I ADMIT IT FREELY.no subject
And I know how you've hurt
And been dragged through the dirt
But come on, get back up
It's the time to live
So give your love to me
I'm gonna keep it carefully
So deep in the treasure chest below my breast
'Cause out of all the people I've known
The places I've been
The songs that I have sung
The wonders I've seen
Now that the dreams are all coming true
Who is the one that leads me on through? It's you.
-- 'The Magic Position', Patrick Wolf
Owen:
This machine will, will not communicate these thoughts and the strain I am under
Be a world child, form a circle before we all go under
And fade out again
Cracked eggs, dead birds scream as they fight for life
I can feel death, can see its beady eyes
All these things into position
All these things we'll one day swallow whole
And fade out again.

I live in a town where you can't smell a thing
You watch your feet for cracks in the pavement
Up above, aliens hover
Making home movies for the folks back home
Of all these weird creatures who lock up their spirits
Drill holes in themselves and live for their secrets
I'd tell all my friends but they'd never believe me
They'd think that I'd finally lost it completely
I'd show them the stars and the meaning of life
They'd shut me away but I'd be all right.

Mary:
Images of broken light which
dance before me like a million eyes
that call me on and on across the universe
Thoughts meander like a
restless wind inside a letter box
they tumble blindly as
they make their way across the universe
Jai guru deva om
Nothing's gonna change my world.

My office glows all night long
It's a nuclear show and the stars are gone
Elevator, elevator, take me home
I'm so hot for the rich girl
Her heels so high, and my hopes so low
'Cause I don't know how to love
I'll take her home after midnight
And if she likes, I'll tell her lies
How we'll be in love by the morning
I don't think she knows
That I'm saying goodbye.

Rose/Martha:
I'm at your back door
With the earth of a hundred nations in my skin
You won't recognize me
For the light in my eyes is strange
It was years ago, God knows
When you strained to tell me your whole truth
That you were not mine to save
That you could not change
I've built a lot of castles
I've built a lot of blazing speed-of-light machines
But it doesn't matter, you know
They all crumble in the winds of change
So I turned back to breathing
I learned a few good reasons to cry
And I finally called home
Praying you weren't out of range.
-- 'Enough To Go By', Vienna Teng
Nine/Rose:
Ice-age heat wave, can't complain
If the world's at large, why should I remain?
Walked away to another plan
Gonna find another place, maybe one I can stand
I move on to another day, to a whole new town with a whole new way
Went to the porch to have a thought
Got to the door and again, I couldn't stop
You don't know where and you don't know when
But you still got your words and you got your friends
Walk along to another day
Work a little harder, work another way
Well, baby, I ain't got no plan.
We'll float on maybe, would you understand?

And hee, kicking it old school, how exciting.
Well here's a good man and a pretty young girl
Trying to play together somehow,
I'm wasting my life, you're changing the world,
I get drunk and watch your head grow
It's the good times that we share
and the bad times that we'll have
It's the good times
and the bad times that we had
Well it's been a long slow collision,
I'm a pitbull, you're a dog,
Baby, you're foul in clear conditions
But you're handsome in the fog.

You don't want to hurt me,
But see how deep the bullet lies.
Unaware that I'm tearing you asunder.
There is thunder in our hearts, baby.
So much hate for the ones we love?
Tell me, we both matter, don't we?
-- 'Running Up That Hill', Kate Bush & various
Aziraphale/Crowley:
I asked you to come over,
and within half an hour,
you were at my door.
I had never really known you,
but I realized that the one you were before,
had changed into somebody for whom
I wouldn't mind to put the kettle on.
Still I don't know what I can save you from.
