Year-End Fannish Round Up

I taught myself how to make videos this year! It was very thrilling.

Wanting To Begin (Doctor Who ; Martha)
Love Is All You Need (Doctor Who/Torchwood ; everyone)
Tristan (Doctor Who/Torchwood ; Jack)
Dance Commander (Doctor Who/Torchwood ; Jack)
Butterflies and Hurricanes (Torchwood ; Gwen)
Brianstorm (Torchwood ; team)
The Book Of Love (Merlin ; Gwen/Morgana)
Night At The Opera (Merlin ; ensemble)

My favorite video this year (of my own): Probably Tristan. Jack/Patrick Wolf=OTP. And I really loved working out how to make the editing fit the music, I'm still pleased with the first minute especially.

My least favorite: Wanting To Begin. Which, well, is a very fitting first vid in a number of ways but is such a First Vid, and oh the things I would do differently if I were making it now.

Most successful video: Love Is All You Need, by a long, long way. It's the most popular thing I've done in fandom to date! So, you know, if I'm forever remember as that girl who did the vid where everyone hugged a lot, I'm massively okay with that. :D It was such a happy thing to make, and spreading the love outwards was just great.

Video most underappreciated by the universe, in my opinion: Oh, well, this year's adventures in vidding were so much more about practising than feedback, and so getting comments at all has been really exciting. If I had to pick one, though, I would have liked more people to see Butterflies & Hurricanes - not because it's a fantastic vid in of itself or anything, but just because it's all about how awesome Gwen is and more people should recognise!

Most fun video to make: Night At The Opera. Oh my GOD I cracked myself up - the fact I appear to have amused other people is the best validation ever.

Hardest video to make: Night At The Opera, almost purely for the time it took to make at least most of the cuts in the music not sound completely horrible.

The things I've learned this year: Everything, really! I have made strides of progress! I have learned about aspect ratios and timing and exporting formats and movement in shots and effects and much more besides.

Things to work on in 2009: How to create better narratives - to date, I've mostly been retelling the stories of the shows, but I've got things in the works that need a lot more thought and consideration.

Statistics etc:

Word count: roughly 100,000.
Story count: 44
Fandoms: 8 [HP: 15, TW: 14, Who: 6, HDM: 2, SGA: 2, Crossovers: 1, Good Omens: 1, Skins: 1, Firefly: 1, Merlin: 1]
Genres: 18 m/m, 17 gen, 4 m/f, 3 f/f, 2 mixed.
Most written pairing: Remus/Sirius at 8 stories, with Jack/Ianto a close second. You're all shocked, I can tell.
Most written character: Jack Harkness clocks in with appearances in 14 stories. Heh.

My Favourite Story This Year: In An Interstellar Burst, just because that particular AU is my happy place.

My Best Story This Year: Hmm. Actually, The Light In My Eyes Is Strange is a rarity in that rereading it never makes me want to change or rework any of it. It says everything I want it to in a concise and rather pleasing way.

Most Fun Story: A few contenders, but really, has to be Spaceships Sailing In (On Christmas Day In The Morning, because it's silly and festive and has aliens who take a shine to Ianto.

Sexiest Story: Hahaha. My PG-13 level prudishness is alive and well! There are a couple of moments in Four Ways Jack and Gwen Fell In Love, And One Way They Didn't I think are kind of hot.

Story that shifted my own perceptions of the characters: Your Last Best Chance - sitting down to write this made me get to know Rodney McKay quite a bit better. It was delightful.

Hardest Story to Write: Late Bloom and I Heard A Whisper (The Way I Might Have Been) get joint honours for this, because I was writing them at basically the same time and they're both twice as long as almost anything I've written and they both required plot and thinking through of timelines and characterisation and scary deadlines that I totally flunked. Most of the time I don't get too invested in feedback levels, but oh man, I'm so pleased they went down well in the end, because so much work omg.

Easiest Story To Write: A Change Is Gonna Come, which was written when I was meant to be NaNoing, thus really couldn't take very long. US politics and Jack Harkness and queer identities and Torchwood through the ages, it just sort of flew off the page because those are all things I like quite a bit.

Biggest Disappointment: The fact that, despite my intentions, Late Bloom still doesn't have a sequel? >.> Also, I think a substantial amount of my Whoverse stuff towards the beginning of the year is a bit sub-par, though I've found my feet now.

Biggest Surprise: I've been knocked a bit sideways by various chunks of feedback this year, but dude. Though I will probably never truly leave HP and R/S, OTP of my heart, I'd pretty much figured I'd said most things I had to say, AU-verse non-withstanding. I certainly didn't expect a flame in two cupped hands to become the most well-received Remus/Sirius story I've ever written, what? I mean, it was designed to hit the spot for Christmassy fluff and I hoped [livejournal.com profile] glass_icarus would like it, but it seems to have struck a real chord with more people than I ever would have expected, which is rather lovely.

Most Underappreciated Story, In My Opinion: I wouldn't dream of being so churlish as to complain, but it was hilarious how Night Of The Living Dead completely bombed, though the people who did read it were very kind! No one wants to read about Owen & zombies, apparently. Why this is the case, I do not know.

Story With Single Sweetest Moment: This is really hard, which tells you everything you need to know about the sort of stories I write. *g* I think the end of Sailed On Shooting Stars probably cinches it.

This Year's Theme And The Story That Demonstrates It Most: Looking back, this was the year when my stories were about characters finding families, finding themselves, fitting into the scheme of the big wide universe, finding peace. Actually, wow, they were pretty much all about that. I Heard A Whisper (The Way I Might Have Been) is where I turned it into a sci-fi plot.

My Overall Thoughts on this Year's Fic: There's so much of it! And I'm distinctly happier, on average, with what I wrote later in the year as opposed to earlier, and so I feel excited for the ways I might be able to improve next year.

Next Year: On with the show! I have languishing WIPs to rescue, DW audiofic to write, Merlin/Arthur and Morgana/Gwen plots that are percolating in my head. I plan to write more pairings so that my stats next year look different. I want to break LJ's posting limits, I want to break my own PG-13 limit (one WIP does indeed have a sex scene in it that I've decided shouldn't just be fade to black - I've just, er, yet to write it). Merlin and SGA are inevitable, Whoverse no doubt ticking along, hopefully still some Potter. I'd like to write more plots, though perhaps more along the lines of sci-fi bodyswap cliches rather than super serious novellas.

Here's to the continuing fannish enjoyment of all!
