First Lines

That 25 first lines meme that's been floating around.

1. Sirius coughs impressively, and the assembled wedding guests look up at him. [Sailed On Shooting Stars]

2. "There she is! Kids, look! The DoctorDonna herself!" [Your History Written In Stars And Time]

3. Marlene McKinnon was eighteen years and ten months old when she died. [Stars Half-Reached]

4. The kettle started whistling, and Lupin picked it up, pouring the water into an antiquated teapot he'd found in the office when he'd first arrived. [Pass It On]

5. Slughorn walked through the halls of Hogwarts, wondering if he looked as drained as he felt. [In This Darkness]

6. James stood at the top of the stairs, looking stunned. [Potential]

7. Sylvia stands in the kitchen doorway, watching her daughter. [Going Home]

8. A trumpet sounded. [The Basic Art Of Communication]

9. When Jack arrived at his desk that morning, he found it miraculously tidier than the night before, where he'd left files everywhere in a fit of pique (the rage inducing paperwork being to do with a primary school and a hopscotch chalking that had come to life - long story). [I've Got A Diary, You Have All The Time In The World]

10. "What about Alfred?" James suggested. [Baby Names]

11. The Hub was silent, with only a few lights flickering against the gloom. [Night Of The Living Dead]

12. "Doctor," says Donna, as he walks into the TARDIS. [Everybody Knows That--]

13. Sirius sat on the step outside Remus' kitchen doorway, looking out over the garden and inhaling the last of a cigarette. [The Tyranny Of Petty Things (The Unconquered Skies Remix)]

14. Marigold was shrieking with laughter as her dormmate pinned her down. [The Rumour Mill]

15. Funny things, stomach wounds. [Snatches Of Time (Bring Me Back, Bring Me Back)]

16. "Run, Ianto Jones." [stumbling, stopping; we outran death and fell]

17. PROFILE: Harkness (pseudonym: real name indeterminate) has been a field operative at Torchwood Three for over a century. A stranded time traveller (for details see pp. 85-95), Harkness is unable to die (pp. 204-378) and thus a unique asset to the Institute. [Access Denied]

18. Ianto, just going out to check out that hospital report Tosh found, might be a while. [Anchored]

19. Luna sat on the lowest rocks, letting the water flow around her ankles and staring out over the mouth of the river. [The Perfect Blue]

20. Even though she could still feel the sensation of the crystal smashing beneath her feet, in some ways it was as though Toshiko had never taken the pendant off. [Should Probably Talk About It]

21. Mary stood on the shoreline, sand creeping in between her toes, the evening breeze whistling around her ankles, moving her skirt back and forth against her legs. [Within The Lapping Waves]

22. "Nngh," James said. [In The Room (Where People Come And Go)]

23. After Martha, after Astrid, after everything, the Doctor finds himself drawn back to Earth. [An Impeccable Source]

24. The familiar set of Ianto's shoulders is one of mild irritation. [Connecting Strokes]

25. "This is when you decide to break it to me," James said. [After The Agony In Stony Places]

On which, some observations:

-- I don't start with dialogue very often, apart from when it's James Potter, apparently. o.O
-- A lot of people do a lot of standing/sitting, looking at something or someone. Um. I think I should break out of that one for a while.
-- Though not strictly related to first lines, I've posted fic with titles using 'stars' three times in a row? That's really embarrassing, both that I didn't notice until just now and that I am so unimaginative. Calling a moratorium on 'stars', 'space', and 'time', yeesh. Oh titling, how you vex me.

In other news, mostly I am continuing adventures in vidding at the moment. I have two things fully on the boil right now, one of which is a genre-bending, slightly spoofy Torchwood vid, and the other is a multi-fandom extravaganza. Both, I fear, require skills I do not currently possess, but I'm trying. Aspect ratios, you are no match for me!

I'm also really looking forward to reposting my exchange stories, [livejournal.com profile] rs_games particularly as it feels like I've been waiting forever to answer comments and talk about it, nnnargh. I am done, done, done with exchanges for the rest of the year, if you catch even a whiff of me signing up for one you are to thwap me instantly.

Ooh, I'm glad you did this one. I really like this meme, but besides myself, I've only read one post of it. (And I think all your first lines are better than mine.)

I'm also looking forward to reading your exchange stories! I have one that's going to be reposted hopefully in a couple weeks, and I'm getting really really antsy about it myself.

This is a brilliant collection of first lines-- each one makes me want to read more!

...When I have the time, I am going to go down this list and read through every one of them. (Also, note to self: must do this meme. Geez, do I even HAVE 25 stories posted on the Internet...?)
