Torchwood: Adam & Reset

Oh, show! I feel so rewarded for my devotion to you, because both of these episodes were STELLAR, in my opinion.

Adam:

* I loved that they spliced Adam into the opening credits, such a clever idea that didn't need to be there!

* I am told this is something of a Buffy rip-off, but this is the Joss Whedon fanclub anyway, isn't it? To me, anyway, it was all fresh and new and interesting.

* Jack history! Hurrah! I felt like all of that was a bit dragged out, though, maybe less would have been more? Anyway, I was super pleased to find out a bit more about the Boeshane Penisula and whatnot, and can now happily get to planning out my Jack personal canon a bit better.

* The Owen-Tosh personality swap type thing was very nicely handled, and as lots of people have said, Burn Gorman really did a fabulous job, both in this episode and the next one.

* Oh, Ianto! His scene with Adam was so, so chilling to watch, but the way Jack came to the rescue was just perfect and made me very gleeful, the way there's a connection there but it's not always overt, so when it does pop to the surface like the ending retcon scene, it's always slightly surprising and great.

* On a shippy note, here is one thing I love about these two. As bosses go, Jack is pretty tactile, and I like how that's played slightly differently with each of the four of them - he's less so with Owen, so when he does pat him on the shoulder or something it's more of a significant gesture, and he's very gentle with Tosh and more firm a lot of the time with Gwen, but with Ianto there it's never particularly platonic, and always done with quite clear affection, even as far back as that 'CPR' moment in Cyberwoman, and there are lots of other examples after that. In short, my ship is built on hand!porn, and it makes me happy.

* Really enjoyed Gwen's storyline, as well, and a nice development from last week, with Rhys even more exposed to the dangers of Torchwood. Oh, Rhys, with your garlic breath and your rants and your silly jokes, and how he loves Gwen so much and even with her memories erased she still found herself liking kissing him, it was all lovely.

* Which is why the one sour note in 'Adam' was the 'not in the way I love you', line. Just. WHY. Because really, between those two there really isn't a choice, not when one is offering you long-term love and support and can now finally help you with the difficulties of your job, and the other is Jack bloody Harkness, who is, you know, wonderful and everything but is not the stuff of happily ever afters and never will be. (And heavens knows I'd like to pass that message around some of Torchwood fandom in any case, whoever they're shipping him with.) GAH. I think that is what bugs me most about this whole stupid storyline.

* The thing I liked best about this episode was that they managed to give good storylines to all five of Team Torchwood, and Rhys, and have a well-developed alien threat, all in the same 50 minutes! See, guys, you can do it!

Reset:

* I was still on a high from how much I enjoyed 'Adam', AND THEN THERE WAS THIS, AND MY SQUEE COULD NOT BE CONTAINED ANY LONGER. And I am going to endeavour to make that the only capslock in the rest of this entry, yes.

* Hi, Martha, hi! Oh, lady, you are looking fine, as usual. ♥

* I have watched that opening chat between her and Jack an embarrassing number of times already, and will likely continue in that vein, because so much win! Jack being flirty and fun and at his best, but asking after her family and making it so clear how he thinks the world of her. I adore the way they are around each other, and could happily watch the adventures of Jack & Martha all the time. Despite having been in a grand total of four of the same episodes, they really are one of my favourite dynamics in the whole of New Who. Also, this line made me laugh so much: "It's the jawline. Once seen, always yearned for." Oh, Jack. :D

* The Doctor recommended her to UNIT! *flails* That is perfect and so fitting and so like him. I loved all of the Year That Never Was references in this, even though a couple of them made me wibble somewhat - Jack's line about distrusting politicians, and Martha being good at being invisible. Oh, you poor broken soldiers, the pair of you.

* Martha had instant chemistry with everybody, it was amazing! She fitted in so well, and was an entirely delightful mix of professional and being natural around the team. I loved how excited she still gets about alien stuff, too, and her spieling off technobabble about quantum mechanics was amazing. Joneses squared! And Martha totally approved of the 'dabbling', which made me emit highly undignified yet gleeful noises.

* Oh, right, sorry, there was plot as well, wasn't there? Plot which I quite enjoyed! I liked the basic concept, and the alien contact lenses were pretty cool (and it's T-minus how long before they turn up in some sort of perverted capacity in fic?) and hurrah for sneaking about. Although, Martha. Love of my life, joy of my soul, next time you're conducting a bit of industrial espionage, would you slip some trainers into that overnight bag of yours? And I know it's companion conditioning and you cannot help yourself, but you don't always have to sneak into the security clearance area with the sirens blazing, you know. Just saying.

* I didn't quite buy how easily the five of them managed to a) get the nurses and Alan Dale to explain their evol plans, and b) shut down the whole facility, but eh. *handwave* Up until then they were doing so well!

* Owen! What?! That was a shocker! I mean, there is no way he is Dead dead, but still! And the previews for next week all look pretty sinister, so I'm a bit worried he may not be brought back just the way he was, I don't know. And Jack's line about "I'll save you" from the last episode seems terribly relevant now, don't you think?
