Neil Gaiman writing for Who in 2010?

Rumour alert, unsurprisingly, but. A series of links led me to this insider info page that sometimes manages to get hold of the real goods, apparently. The article itself is pretty long and has lots of other topics (although if you fancy it, the writer's got a brief recap of Steven Moffat's resume as well as some speculation about the future of Who in general, which is a fun read). The Gaiman-relevant bits are under the cut:

I understand that Neil Gaiman has been approached to write for the popular TV series "Doctor Who," for broadcast in 2010.

So what's going on here? Let's find out.

[...]

Well, some people see Steven as transforming Doctor Who into something very different. That’s not true, Steven has been a cheerleader for Russell’s work on the project from Day One and will continue in that vein. Indeed, he may well fight aganst what is expected of him. But odds are we’ll get some more fun time travel stories out of it, maybe a slight tweak towards intricate structure, and some interesting geek-friendly names.

Such as the rumour running around my BBC sources that Neil Gaiman being approached to write an episode for 2010. That would be this Neil Gaiman, comic author, fantasy novelist, screenwriter, poet and writer of the Duran Duran Biography 1985. With possibly the most non-committal non-confirmation I’ve ever read. And I’ve read the responses of current Labour ministers.

In fact when I asked Neil if he’d care to comment, he pleaded the Francis saying, "You may very well think that, but I could not possibly comment."

I do very well think that. I do.

Of course, nothing will actually have been commissioned by the BBC at this stage, and there's many a slip 'twixt cup and prosthetic lip, but it's looking good.

*flaps* I cannot even! What would he write? Would it short circuit the network from its greatness? So, do we utilise the fannish hive mind now? All together, we do believe in a Neil Gaiman Doctor Who episode, we do, we do... Oh my.

If this is true, I may spontaneously combust with glee...

I asked Neil Gaiman about writing for Doctor Who at a book signing, and he said that he would love to do it, and the BBC said he was welcome to do it anytime-- he just had to come up with an idea.

[identity profile] lefaym.livejournal.com 2008-05-28 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I've met him twice actually (although I doubt he remembers, as both times were at book signings with hundreds of other people!) He is very awesome in real life too; he takes time to have a little chat with all his fans, even though it means that he won't get back to his hotel until after midnight.

And yeah, it is definitely cool that it's been discussed. I just really hope that he gets to write a script before Ten regenerates, because I can just see David Tennant doing magical things with a Neil Gaiman script.

He recently talked about this in his journal. I think it would be wonderful; not because I'm a Who fan (I haven't been able to watch more than the Christmas Invasion), but because I know that he and Maddy love the show loads. It'd be big for them, so I think it's adorable. :D

Were this to be true, the entire fabric of the Universe would have to be altered, so that the Ultimate Scale Of Win can be requantified.

Because as it stands, the Scale is several orders of magnitude too small to describe the level of Win that this would be

:OO

IF I manage to go to this literature convention in July and attend his lecture/talk/book autograph (or whatever it is that he's doing over there) and if there's some sort of Q&A session, I shall definitely ask something about that LOL.

That's quite a lot of 'ifs' but I hope I make it in the end *crosses fingers*

Literary convention, actually. *facepalm*

Anyway YES YES I truly hope I'll be able to go (and investigate properly of course), I'll cry emo Doctor tears if I don't ;).

OMG, IF THIS HAPPENS, ALL MY DREAMS WILL HAVE COME TRUE. (Well, okay, Joss Whedon still needs to write and direct an episode, and someone with an accent and a long coat needs to propose marriage to me, but otherwise.)

THERE ARE FEW THINGS MORE POTENTIALLY AWESOME THAN THIS.

[identity profile] secondsilk.livejournal.com 2008-05-29 01:59 am (UTC)(link)
I would so love that.

David Tennant's not confirmed for series five, though, so if there's anything it's Steven calling Neil and saying "how would you feel about being asked?"

[identity profile] kyasuriin.livejournal.com 2008-05-29 05:26 am (UTC)(link)
*crosses fingers* that would be so awesome!

[identity profile] ladygrey-lj.livejournal.com 2008-05-29 06:22 am (UTC)(link)
WE DO!

There was something about Steven Moffat taking over on his blog; there was a fan letter asking what he thought of it and if he'd maybe ever write an episode and while he did say how awesome he thinks Moffat is, he just ignored the part about his writing an episode. Very "no comment, but actually YESSS", no?
