R/S Ficlet for [livejournal.com profile] sambethe

For [livejournal.com profile] sambethe from here.

Remus/Sirius, PG, 750 words. It's a sad one.

Sirius was very, very sloshed. James and Peter had both gone somewhere (he’d forgotten why) and so it was just him and an almost as drunk Remus. He smiled sloppily and leant against the wall of the dormitory for support, looking down at Remus, who was on the floor. What was he doing down there?

‘Moooony. Hello.’

‘Hello there. I can’t see, y’know.’

‘Good.’ Sirius felt an enormous urge to do something. He sat down.

Remus smiled at him. ‘Nyygh,’ said Sirius.

Even at the time, he didn’t know it happened, but he found himself being propelled forward. He could see where he was headed, and it could all end in disaster, but Sirius couldn’t bring himself to care. Remus was closer, and closer, until suddenly Sirius giggled and his head landed on Remus’ shoulder.

‘Hello there,’ Remus said again.

‘Love you,’ Sirius muttered into Remus’ robes.

Remus didn’t hear him.

---

Remus stared up at the castle, feeling very odd indeed. There was chatter and clatter all around him as students boarded carriages, eager for the journey home. They stood in silence for a moment, and Remus’ hand nearly brushed against Sirius’ fingertips before he stopped himself.

James laughed. ‘Who knew we were all such soppy gits?’

Remus smiled, but he couldn’t quite tear his eyes away from the castle yet.

‘Oh, Merlin…’ Sirius sighed. ‘This is ridiculous – it’s not like we’ll never come back, is it?’

‘It’s not the same, though,’ James replied. ‘No, this is it.’

‘I can’t believe we’re leaving,’ Peter murmured, shaking his head.

There was a just audible sniff from Lily.

And Remus looked at Sirius, and wanted to touch him, to kiss him so badly that the air he breathed out tried to persuade him. But then Sirius shook his head, snapped out of the moment and led the move towards the coaches.

Another moment drifted away, and so Remus left Hogwarts for the last time.

---

The band had started to pack up, and guests were beginning to throng their way out. The bride and groom had vanished, after the most lascivious wink from James that Sirius had ever seen. He and Remus lingered in a corner, watching everyone else move around.

‘Well, that’s that then,’ Sirius remarked constructively.

‘Yeah,’ Remus answered, equally helpfully.

‘We don’t have to grow up now, do we?’

Remus laughed. ‘I’d like to see you try.’

Sirius snorted. ‘Think I’ll just marry the bike.’

Remus nodded in consideration. ‘Yeah, that could work well. You two are so happy together, after all.’

‘You’re not, err, y’know, seeing anyone at the moment? Are you?’ Sirius asked in a rush of daring.

‘No, not right now.’

‘Oh. Right. What happened to whatshisname?’ Sirius wasn’t really looking at Remus any more, just examining the table with great interest.

‘Didn’t work out. Too clingy.’

‘Right.’ And Sirius nearly said something, the words sitting right there, always ready. He nearly did something, too, something big and dramatic that would sort this mess out once and for all.

Instead, it was muttered excuses and an exit, followed by a throng of missed opportunities and a lingering almost feeling that Sirius was so used to, now.

---

And now Sirius stared at Remus’ sleeping face, half-illuminated by the half-moon. He followed the curve of a cheekbone, and did not move. The strange fancies of a restless night projected outwards, and for a half-moment he saw green light in Remus’ breath, made tangible by the ridiculous cold of their flat.

Affirmation and denial flew around Sirius’ head, and Sirius did not kiss him.

---

Remus nodded grimly as they stood at the fireplace of Grimmauld Place, but Sirius was laughing, and suddenly Remus was afraid.

‘Come on, Moony. Let’s go and save the world.’ Sirius was buzzing with energy now.

Remus hesitated a moment too long, unsure of what to say, and Sirius threw powder into the fire, before dragging Remus in with him and suddenly they were caught in a whirlwind of Order members and the Ministry of Magic, racing towards the Department of Mysteries and Remus wanted everything to slow down, just for one moment.

And then there were screams, and children in the line of fire, and then Remus was a fighter. He stood in Malfoy’s way, made Harry and Neville run, and then…

And then Sirius’ laughter stopped, and in the silence Remus felt all the shimmering should-have-beens of his life leave him, arcing away and into the veil, vanishing away with Sirius.

Then noise, then nothing, save Harry’s desperation.

Ouch! Not out of the realm of possiblity, though. Especially Sirius pledging to marry the bike. Enjoyed! Maggie

Oh, lovely! And so sad! *sniff*

Haven't read R/S angst for a while, and this was very nice (in a sad way of course, poor things).

This is surprisingly wonderful… terrible, of course, in the end, but… You excellently make the pov clear in the first paragraph of every intallment. And I like the way the voice is different in each part, so I can feel time passing, the boys growing older.

Exactly what I was looking for. It was lovely.

a lingering almost feeling that Sirius was so used to, now.

So many might of beens and almosts for this pair... *goes to sniffle some more*

Oh dear. Well, now I'm all sad and it's your fault, I'll have you know. Posting such well-written angst, like knife to the heart....

[identity profile] doctorfumbles.livejournal.com 2006-10-03 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
That was amazing, :)

My favorite one is the third one, the emotion was amazing.

"And then he came back from beyong the veil, swept Remus up in his arms and kissed him like his life had just ended."

*clings to denial*

this was lovely and perfectly bittersweet. well done.

*Sniffles* So sad, so beautiful, so good, but so so sad. *wipes tear*

*is crying and laughing at the same time* ♥ ♥

It was horrifying to see the end coming and to know what would happen. Love's missed chances are perhaps the most tragic things in life.

[identity profile] mrs-batman.livejournal.com 2006-10-03 06:47 am (UTC)(link)
You have made my cry. I would like to curse you or something, but you write too well. *shakes fist* Something happy now, please.

(Yes, yes, that was ridiculous. Please take my comment in the way that it's meant (crazy ramblings intended to be high complimentary, but that don't come off right when I'm not actually verbalising them...) There are hand movements and facial expressions that don't get shown online, so I always feel like I'm coming across as insane instead of, er, mildly insane.)

It's very late. In short: this was great, and sad.

[identity profile] aillil.livejournal.com 2006-10-03 08:51 am (UTC)(link)
All those almosts and all those could-haves. Very nicely done, but Teh Sad. :)

This: as they stand at the fireplace should have stood.

[identity profile] mysid.livejournal.com 2006-10-03 01:43 pm (UTC)(link)
ohmygod--you just killed me. It's not even 10am, and I've already had my total daily allowance of angst.

The green light illuminating Remus's breath was a wonderful detail. I can understand it making Sirius think twice.

[identity profile] solidbaby.livejournal.com 2006-10-03 03:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Ooo that was horrible! In a good way though! I adore this kind of thing where it's gorgeous and real 'seize the day' ideas and stuff like that. It was lovely in an entirely sad way. Wonderful!

[identity profile] lady-nimua.livejournal.com 2006-10-03 05:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I haven't read a hp fic in a long while, and I definitely don't regret reading this.

each scenario was written so well it was like I was there, in their head, in that moment.

the 'almosts' are so strong I can taste them.

I really do feel like I was there, and that's beautiful. very well done.

[identity profile] old-light.livejournal.com 2006-10-04 09:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Argh, I didn't want to read it because I knew it'd be brilliant and sad and then I'd be all sad and weepy and now I am, but I don't regret reading it because it was so good and...I'm rambling. Yes. I'll shut up now.

ARG. OH, THE FRUSTRATION.

Bloody Canon.

Fics with regret hanging thick in the air always get to me, and this was particularly painful. Great job! ;)

Omg. I think my heart just broke at the end. I feel like crying now...

[identity profile] bardonian.livejournal.com 2007-01-22 04:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm so terribly cheesy right now, but my heart actually hurts after reading this. It's just... so awful and so wonderful at the same time.

Sorry. That's about it really... No constructive reviews from me...
That said, I loved it!
