This interview with Julian Murphy is so aggravating.
One of the biggest revelations of the series was how great an actress Angel Coulby is as Gwen. You suddenly realised how underused she’s been before now.
“I think she has done fantastic stuff. It’s always difficult with those kind of characters. In the first two series with Gwen and Morgana it was hard to give them big and meaty roles. Now Morgana is evil it’s much easier to give her proactive, proper stories. And in Gwen’s case, now that she has a real status of being Arthur’s future queen – well, potentially – and her role a growing and increasingly important one, I think you can see what Angel really can do as an actress.”
Angel and Katie McGrath (Morgana) still complain in every interview that they want to do more swordfighting.
“Yeah, they’re always saying that.”
So, are you going to let them?
“I do let them do a bit. Well, Morgana. They did do a lot more riding in this series. But, yes, I’m conscious of it, and I’d love for Gwen to do more action, but I think for the audience we’ve always got to stay within the bounds of fantasy credibility. If we can engineer it, we’ll do it. If we can’t, we have to be realistic.”
...

Eesh, I cannot wait for this season to be over so I can get on with my life. And not even touching all the 'ew, fans' stuff because WHATEVER.
Stupid show with its stupid yet adorable characters who I am still invested in and thus cannot let go! OPEN CANON FANDOMS ARE STRESSFUL, ACK. But tomorrow is the finale and then, sweet sweet hiatus.

I lol forever and EVER at the idea that the show has any fantasy cred. That's part of the charm, isn't it?
Also, that gif is pure win. <3

Your decision to totally pull out is looking more appealing by the day!

(From a fan): I’m not a slash fan myself but calling any portion of your fanbase “that lot” — really, what were you thinking? So, to the interviewer — did the comment lose something in the translation? Is it possible he didn’t mean to sound a derisive as he did?
(From the interviewer): Hmmm, yes, the slash comment was a direct quote but I can see now that written down it comes across as a more brutal than Julian meant it. Certainly he was laughing at the time, and just expressing amazement at what people see in the show rather than condemning anybody for doing so. I’ve now edited it to tone it down to avoid any misinterpretation

Seriously! What the actual fuck?

Because in a show about wizards and talking dragons and monsters, what's really going to throw people out of the story is a girl holding a sword. What the hell. Even if I could buy that argument for half a second, aren't chicks with swords pretty much a basic component of fantasy?

Dear lord, that's the most offensive thing I've read in some time.

I saw the interview on my flist earlier and I couldn't bring myself to read it, because I already knew it was going to piss me off hard. What did he say about fans? Because he can ask Brad Wright what happens if you tell your fans to get the fuck out...

This is telling me that everything I like about the show comes a) purely by accident and b) from the hard work of the actors. Brb, running off with Angel and Katie forever.

And, yeah, it's always frustrating when you realise that you are not watching the show that the writers are making. I look forward to seeing what these kids do next, and hope it's awesome!

SO, IF WE'RE GOING TO TALK ABOUT REALISM, JULIAN: how realistic do we think it is, in the ~medieval period this is set it, that an illegitimate FEMALE WOMAN would have had a legitimate claim to the throne? I mean, I know Morgana's got the crown through nefarious means, but as far as I can tell NO ONE so far, not even Uther at the end of ep 12 has actually pointed out the whole ILLEGITIMATE and also a WOMAN aspect. WHICH, YOU KNOW, COOL, but don't talk to me about realism, then, you fucking douche.
It's also not terribly realistic that a woman would be allowed, however talented, to fight the Crown Prince (I'm looking at you, Morgause), or in fact be able to keep her own house when there were no men involved (though I guess Gwen does have Arthur to thank for that, but STILL. It makes very little sense). THIS IS WHAT I HATE. In some respects, they've sidestepped some gender issues quite neatly. But then in (most) others ... they're still so completely fucking awful. RAAAAAGE.

I don't think there's enough grumpyface in the WORLD to express how many things are wrong with that interview. (your gif is very apt)

That gif is awesomesauce, btw.

That part killed me dead. I found it hard to believe that there were fans around squeeing over his responses.
Appropriate GIF is appropriate.

Then the next part, at his “Yeah, they’re always saying that”, I had a long white blank while trying to see something after that sentence. Surely it must be white text on white background. No way he'll just say that and stop there.
Had I been the interviewer, I would have snapped the next question, or maybe try to say it really slowly. Then possibly do exactly like in that gif, at least mentally, at his answer.
Thank you so much, Katie and Angel, for bringing much more into the show than what this guy can ever imagine for you.
