Fandom Year in Review

Your main fandom of the year?
I think this year the pendulum did actually swing from Doctor Who over to MCU as my biggest fandom. I was super excited for Cap 2 and I loved it even more than I was hoping, because in addition to all of my Steve and Natasha feels we also got Sam Wilson: Perfect Human. <3333 I read a lot of fic, reblogged a lot of things on tumblr, had a lot of feels everywhere, it was a great time.

Your best new fandom discovery of the year?
I think that Brooklyn Nine-Nine has been the show that has most exceeded expectations - Captain Holt's entire existence fills my heart with sunshine and joy, as do Amy and Rosa and everyone else.

Your biggest fandom disappointment of the year?
The Bomb Girls TV movie of which we do not speak, which seemed to actively try and wreck what was an excellent show.

Your fandom boyfriend of the year?
A joint award for Steve Rogers and Sam Wilson. Bless them. <3

Your fandom girlfriend of the year?
Lots, as ever. October Daye. Katniss Everdeen. Natasha Romanoff. Other badass ladies who have difficulty with feelings.

Your biggest squee moment of the year?

Two things, both in the category of things I'd longed for but hadn't expected would happen:

The finale of Legend of Korra, and Korra/Asami becoming canon. I absolutely love this Korrasami shipper reaction video, it's so beautiful. It's this amazing balm to all the queerbaiting in TV, all the missed potential, that actually this time a show noticed it had a good thing and decided to go there. I'm still verklempt about it really.

The finale of Doctor Who, and the reveal that yes, Michelle Gomez was indeed playing the Master. What amazing casting, and it was just so exciting and refreshing and awesome. She was absolutely mesmerising, and it really was about time.

The most missed of your old fandoms?
Much as I'm enjoying the Twelve and Clara show, I don't feel fannish about it in the same way that I did for the Ponds era, and I still miss them a lot.

The fandom you haven't tried yet, but want to?
Been meaning to check out Cabin Pressure actually, given the recent enthusiasm.

Your biggest fan anticipations for the coming year?
Agent Carter! Avengers 2! Parks and Rec's final season (sob)!

fanworks roundup:

fic
I Will Be Right Here (Frozen, film coda)
The Aetherion (Doctor Who, Amy, Rory, River, the 45k epic space quest)
One Day I'll Come Back (Doctor Who, episode coda for The Caretaker)
Guilt Scotch & Geese Dicks (How to Get Away With Murder), with [personal profile] happydork

Fic wise, not a lot happened this year. I'm tremendously pleased to have finally posted The Aetherion but mostly I'd been avoiding it for ages and then did some copy edits. Then two short canon codas and one Yuletide story that was really [personal profile] happydork's doing. My ability to write fiction decreases every year, unfortunately.

The Questions

Favorite

I think Level Up is the closest to my hard - the pairing of the song with Buffy was something that [personal profile] purplefringe and I had thought would be awesome for ages, and it was a really nice way to put into vid form all the thoughts and feelings we'd had watching the entire show over the past couple of years.

Most Successful

Everyone's responses to Blank Space have been very gratifying! I'm delighted that Doctor/Master + Taylor Swift felt relevant to so many people's interests.

Most Fun to Make

Blank Space, no contest. We just spent our time cackling with laughter/clutching each other due to Feels, it was the greatest.

Also the end of Counting Stars makes me laugh a lot, I crack myself up sometimes. *g*

Single Sexiest Moment

Blank Space - the moment cutting between Ten/Simm!Master's intense forehead touching and Twelve/Gomez!Master's kiss is something I am super pleased with and hits me right where I live.

Hardest Vid to Make

Level Up was occasionally a struggle - there was just so much source footage and I really wanted to do justice to the canon. It was really rewarding when everything started coming together, but getting to a first draft was a bit of a slog.

The Things I Learned This Year

I learned some technical stuff within Final Cut about how to work from original files without clipping and make clips in programme, which is something I think I'll find very helpful going forward.

I tried to push myself a little in terms of motion and energy, trying to find dynamic moments in the source to heighten emotion in the vid or create connections between different moments. I'd like to take that further next year if I can.

I also did more humour this year, with All Star, the end of Counting Stars, and Blank Space, and that was really fun! Particularly in the context of playing vids at Vidukon, but also generally, making people laugh is one of my favourite things to do as a vidder and I don't always do it as much as I'd like.

Planning for Next Year

This year I'm going to have a go at doing my first constructed reality vid for a non-visual source, so we'll see how that goes! I would also like to do a character study, as I didn't really do one this year. Apart from that, who knows!

... should really go back to finishing my festivid now. >.>
