THOOOOORRRRR
Just got back from Thor: The Dark World. Really enjoyed it! Do note, there are two post-credits scenes. Onto the spoilery stuff! (If you don't want to read a spoiler-filled post but do have a specific question, feel free to PM me.)
Okay, for people who clicked on the cut because they need to know anyway!
Stuff I didn't like:
+ Frigga gets some great scenes near the beginning and then gets fridged to motivate Thor and Loki to work together, which really sucks. That was my least favourite bit of the film. :(
+ Hogun is barely in it, and there's this whole gross thing where the white villain (Chris Eccleston's character) is a cerebral tactician while his black deputy (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje) undergoes a process to turn himself into an animalistic monster. So sort of terrible on race, aside from the part where they came to their senses and gave Idris Elba way more to do.
Stuff I liked:
+ Everything else! All the characters had wonderful moments, and it is consistently laugh out loud funny, even during big battle sequences. I thought a lot of it was really witty and imaginative and struck some nice balances between a lot of different elements. Some of the best stuff in it I honestly don't want to write down when so few people have seen it because the surprise makes it so much better.
+ HEIMDALL. YESSSSSS. So delighted they gave him better material this time. \o/
+ DARCY LEWIS FOR QUEEN OF EVERYTHING. Omg she stole every scene she was in and was SO DELIGHTFUL ILHER SO MUUUUUCH. I had to work really hard not to shriek with glee in the middle of the cinema. Jane, also completely brilliant - she saved the day with science! She was excited and interested about everything! And god she and Thor are adorable together. *smooshes them*
+ Bechdel passing huzzah. I really enjoyed Jane's moments with Frigga and Sif, where they both clearly appreciate this new small human that Thor seems fond of. Ugh, Frigga was so good, why did they kill her, dammit all.
+ Thor coming to the realisation that Odin's kind of terrible. He'd rather be a good man than a great king! Baaaby! I enjoyed getting to see Thor at least a little happy in this after all the terribleness of Avengers. He is happier when he has a Jane, aw.
+ So, Loki. I'm not a Loki fan, though I enjoy his role in the verse, if that distinction makes sense? I have no sympathy for him at all, is what I mean. And I personally feel like the film managed to strike a balance of giving him complexity and also a lot of great one liners without letting him off the hook. YMMV. And though I didn't end up caring about Loki, I did care about Thor's Loki feels, ugh. He just wants his brother back so much and it breaks my heart.
+ I loved the big boss battle, which is unusual for me! But all the zipping through the realms stuff was genius and really hilarious, and also Jane saved the day with science while Thor was basically a glorified lab tech. I can get behind that. <3
In conclusion: FLAIL. Marvel are continuing to up their game!

SPOILER SPOILER
I like loki a lot - I was very disappointed in the Avengers,I think, because it seemed like a complete difference from Thor 1, and I loved him in here. Thor 2's Loki made it very, very clear that while Loki's doings and deeds were reprehensible (ie, he cannot be forgiven for what he did to midgard) except that he's following his father's example, who isn't exactly a saint, and htat the treatment between both Thor and Loki for doing something similiar (They were both genocidal at the beginning of Thor 1), and Thor's crime was punished lightly, compared to Loki's being shut away from all that he loved. And while he tried to defend himself, everyone tell him to shut up and that he'd brought it on himself.
So yeah I know he should be punished, but it feels like he should have had HEAPS of therapy instead of just being shut away out of sight and mind. For all of Asgard's technological advances, they apparently are shit at the mental health aspect - because Loki couldn't possibly have become who he is now without the rest of society and family to have 'helped' shape him.
I loved Darcy! DAARCY DARCY DARCY her and her Intern, it's like all of fandom's Darcy's Minions in ONE ANKJDFSDFSD! I would have done without the kissig but okay then .
NOT HAPPY ABOUT FRIGGA DYING that was argh. why did they have to. And it's like they forgot that they have Golden Apples of Idunn - when Thor in movie 1 died and CAME BACK.
just argh.
Jane and her science! she was damselly in the beginning but once she was back in her area of expertise, she wass just AWESOME YAY~ She is adorable and nerdy! :D
And THor realising that odin is terrible is YES YES YES. ANd now we has a Thor on Earth permanently. Now he can take Jane and Move into the Avenger's tower. Yes. :D
I also loved the tech - I think they did very well with the airships for air defense and the air-defense 'guns' while maintaining the asthetics of it being Ancient Norse Gods.
Though you'd think after 2 generations of having met DARK ELVES and their guns/distance weaponry, they'd actually have something more distance-y than a glowing swords?
And I still think they underutilized Idris Elba; I hadn't known who he was before Thor 1, but he was SDJFHSKDJFSFD in Pacific Rim, I think it's a tragic waste.

Actually, yes. The female characters were good (despite the fridging).

SO much this. I absolutely loved the film. This made me SO sad. She was so cool before they killed her.
