These extracts from an interview with Steven Moffat re. Amy and Rory in s7 were relevant to my interests.

Do you think you have a thing for not killing characters, or bringing characters back?

I’m not very good at killing people. I don’t like it! I didn’t even know that about myself until Russell pointed out that I’d written six episodes of Doctor Who for him and I hadn’t killed anybody. Literally hadn’t killed anybody. No one dies in ‘The Empty Child’, no one dies in ‘Girl in the Fireplace’ except the person who was dead already. I have killed a few but… I haven’t killed any main characters, I don’t think the doctors companions should die, I think that spoils the fairytale a bit. But that doesn’t mean that I won't of course!

Is it true that the current companions, Amy and Rory, are leaving the series?

That’s right, yeah.

Are they just going to be gone when the next series opens or…?

No no no, I’m writing that right now, the big Rory and Amy heartbreaking finale, they’ll be gone forever, I’m doing that right now.

How heartbreaking?

It will be quite heartbreaking, definitely… I think you’ll be in trouble watching it.

Aw, why can’t there ever be a happy exiting story?

Heartbreaking doesn’t mean unhappy. Wait and see. I mean, it’s parting. It’s parting from someone and that’s always very hard.

That, combined with Karen's comments a little while ago, are finally making me breathe a little easier.

I think my number one wish would be that they decide to leave to go and settle down on an alien planet somewhere or live on a spaceship or something, that would be amazing. But I would like it to be their choice, whatever happens. *crosses fingers* I'm just glad we've still got a little more of them to go, and that from the sounds of things it's not going to break my heart entirely.

Having them live on a spaceship would be amazing!

I'm hopeful that their ending will be completely awesome and the only heartbreaking part is "bye, Doctor!" because that's always a little sad.

Right? I'm just not sure how cut out they are for a return to normal life at this point! And River could come to visit and it would be awesome.

Yeah, the Doctor's been such a huge part of their lives, especially Amy's, that obviously it's an emotional moment for everyone and I will totally cry, but I like the idea that nothing terrible and tragic will necessarily happen.

I'm putting all my money on 'Amy gets pregnant again and doesn't want another kidnapped time-head baby' because heterosexism. I don't want that, but based on their journey so far, I can't see much else.

Unless it's 'Ponds both start going mental and can't keep their timelines straight.' Which is also heartbreaking, but the kind of unhappy I don't think Moff would give.

I'm so glad he said heartbreaking =/= unhappy. I described The Night Circus as beautiful and heartbreaking at the same time and it isn't sad, precisely.

Yeah, I think that's the most likely thing too - I'm okay with them having another kid but I'd like it to not *just* be about that, you know? We'll see. So long as they're happy, I'm fine with it really.

Me too. Having something terrible happen to them would just be the worst, I couldn't deal.

The idea of a companion departure that doesn't wallow in loads of angst is really, really appealing.

Yeah, I definitely think they're two different things - parting is always such sweet sorrow, etc etc, but you don't have to add another heap of angst on top of that.

I really see Rory being the one to flip first about a time-head baby. But Moffatt doesn't necessarily agree with me on characterization.

I could see Rory flipping first, but I don't think Amy would go along with it if she didn't agree, to some degree.
