But Nasreen falls into the stereotypical trap of female characters - she basically gets herself locked in a bunker, frozen, for god-knows-how-many-hundreds-of-years, for a man who may or may not reciprocate her affections. I think I "ugh!!!"'d aloud when that happened.
This is blatantly untrue. Nasreen CHOOSES to stay underground with the Silurians and Tony. She is not forced, she is not tricked, she is not trapped. Tony even urges her to go with The Doctor, but she makes the conscious choice - without first consulting Tony of it - that she is going to stay underground. And that is not out of character in the least, as she refers to finally reaching the center of the Earth as her "life's work." She worked with the Silurian leader as a representative of Earth to try and share it. Tony is not the only reason she stays, she also stays because reaching the center of the Earth has been something she's spent her whole life trying to get to (as she tells The Doctor when she demands he take her down with him in the TARDIS) and she knows the importance of being able to help humans and Silurians co-habitate in 1,000 years. Also, I guess you must have forgotten that TONY was the one who openly came onto Nasreen first. She merely placed her hand on his as they watched the Silurians get closer to the surface in "The Hungry Earth" and then he turned to her and kissed her to which she expressed surprised.
Nasreen: Tony?! Tony: Like you didn't know?
And then she reciprocated, by kissing him a second time. So much for "a man who may or may not reciprocate her feelings." So no, there is nothing stereotypical about Nasreen. She's a very independent, strong female character who shows plenty of agency. She makes her own choices and doesn't let others - including a 900+ year old Time Lord - keep her from achieving her life long goals. I'm sure she'll be a force to be reckoned with in 1,000 years when she awakens with the Silurians and she'll be a powerful ally in establishing co-habitation between humans and Silurians. I hope they do a followup to show what happens when the Silurians, Tony, and Nasreen awaken in the future. She was an incredible character, a fantastic female role model (and an "older" female character at that; positive representations of 40+ womenn are far and few between in DW), and I'd love to see more like her.
