Doctor Who 6x03

The last fifteen minutes totally made this episode for me - I went from slightly bored to really engaged as soon as they were on the spaceship. Also, I love Amy and Rory and the Doctor. So much. <3

Episode Stuff

+ This was not the best ensemble crew of the week by any means. All the pirates apart from the captain were weakly characterised if at all, which I thought was a shame! I am, however, charmed by the idea of them all going off into space at the end.

+ Relatedly, the fact that everyone lived was lovely! And it does somewhat, though not entirely, soften my objection to the fact that the black pirates were the first to go - that's still annoying because they get less screentime/characterisation, but it's better.

+ Lily Cole! I love her! She was wonderfully haunting.

+ I felt like the bulk of the episode's main issue was that it didn't know what genre it wanted to be. I like the way Doctor Who mashes up all kinds of things, but this wasn't an all-out pirate story nor a horror story of a monster picking off people one by one. It just kind of hung around in the middle.

+ It was largely redeemed for me by the end, though. Spaceship! Alien doctor! Dimensions collapsing on each other! It was cool and a little creepy and a lovely contrast to the rest of it.

Character Stuff

+ AMY POND ILU. She got so excited about getting to dress up as a pirate and swashbuckle. And also was so wonderful negotiating to get Rory back at the end, her face. ♥

+ RORY POND ILU. And your stupid face. Also, jeez, the show needs to stop killing him already - a, it's getting ridiculous, b, even when it's stupidly drawn out and I know it's a blatant ploy on my emotions IT STILL WORKS. Shut up, I have a lot of feelings about the Ponds okay.

+ I am charmed by them doing something as ordinary as saying goodnight to the Doctor and going to bed! And again with the hugs and the saving each other and continued references to Rory being a nurse and <33333. Also, all the references to how much they enjoy playing dressup all the time. :D

+ Speaking of, someone who is not me, i.e. someone who knows more about the subject, should write the story about Amy and Rory: Cosplayers. IT WOULD BE GREAT.

+ ELEVEN ILU. And his, just, everything.

Arc Stuff

+ Amy's still pregnant on the astral plane, I don't even know, as well as being sad about the Doctor's death.

+ Cyborg nanny makes a reappearance! iPlayer was messing up so I didn't catch exactly what she said - something about 'stay calm'? Whatever it is, I'm very excited to see where that's going.

+ Okay, theory time! I suspect that the idea behind this episode - something on a different plane of existence getting somehow trapped alongside something on this plane - is going to come into play again. It appears to be a subtly different way of playing around parallel universes but instead different planes appear to be a bit more fluid. So, possibly Amy is indeed pregnant on, if not the astral plane, some kind of other plane, but not in this one? Who knows, but I am going to throw that out there because it beats 'pregnant by forced Silent IVF' which, ew.
