Month of Awesome Women: Jennifer Keller (Stargate Atlantis)

It was Jewel Staite's casting that finally pushed me over the edge into giving SGA a whirl, and sure enough I was instantly charmed by her character.
She is a woman of science who suddenly finds herself thrust well over her head, forced to make life-or-death decisions involving fantastical components like Replicator nanites and murderous dreams. She's frequently afraid and learns how to work through that fear and deal with situations she is not remotely prepared for, unlike most of the people she works with. By the fourth season, where John in peril or Teyla stranded felt relatively commonplace and we could be reasonably sure that they would handle the situation, Jennifer brought a new edge to those situations that made them so much more real to me. She reacts pretty much how you or I would - after all, she's a doctor, not an action hero.
She's also funny and smart and a little weird, which means she fits right in on Atlantis in the end. She also maintains her ties to Earth, which I always appreciated. She actually wants to see her dad, bless! Also, she turned into a hive ship that one time, and that was pretty much amazing.
The whole love triangle angle that ended up dominating her arcs in the last season was somewhat frustrating for many, many reasons, but it did mean that we continued to get Keller on our screens, and from where I'm standing that was never a bad thing.
