You really capture Merlin's voice here, and the way he feels trapped between a too-distant endpoint for destiny, Uther, and Morgana.
Things that worked especially well for me: --So nice to see Elyan here! And I love the bit that hanging out with him and Gwen reminds Merlin of Ealdor. --Merlin noticing but not admitting that Gwen is a better cook than Gaius. I love the way this little example of his tremendous loyalty in a small thing works thematically with his loyalty to Gwen and Arthur in the main plot. --The fact that Gwen starts the whole threesome ball rolling; I imagined that she knew how much Arthur would appreciate the kiss via Merlin. --Arthur's eyes going soft. Gah! --Merlin getting accidentally speared and being unable to live it down. --Arthur's always the first one to take his shirt off --The fact that Merlin's motives are a mixture of love for Gwen & Arthur and defiance of the oppressive customs of Camelot. --Gwen wearing the pink dress! Also, taking note of her luscious figure. --The fact that Merlin uses secret magic to bring the two of them together.
--This:
"Did you really think you were just a substitute?" she asks.
"Well," Merlin falters. "Yes?"
Phenomenal and very cheering! Thanks so much for writing and bringing a little joy to my day!
