I tend to prefer fic set in canon ten times better than them, but if the premise looks interesting enough, I'll give it a try.
Yes - I think as well, for me, the AU-verse often has to suit the characters to an extent - of course Arthur is the modern Prince of Wales, for instance, but he wouldn't fit nearly so well in some other circumstances.
