I think we can sum up my state of mind over the last two days (namely feverish and furious refreshing of flist and Twitter) by saying that I just popped over to who_anon for kicks. Um. Anyway, they were talking about the companion in the latest episode, and blah blah blah -- my favourite was the cries of 'elitism!', what? -- but I got to wondering about the most popular one-off companions (for a generous value of companion that includes Elton and Sally), and companions generally. Thus: Dreamwidth poll! I'd imagine we can assume spoilers for 'Planet of the Dead' in the comments.

I haven't seen any of the DW specials except for The Next Doctor. In fact, I haven't seen much of series 1-3, though I have seen all of four. Clearly, I am a TW fan first, huh? Who just doesn't grab me - I enjoy watching it, but I never feel the urge to go back and watch another episode.

So, me long-windedly saying "waaah, I can't fill out your poll". :P

Hee! I find primarily-Torchwood fans most intriguing! I keep forgetting there are other ways people started watching the show than through Jack on Who. Myself, I play more in the TW sandbox, but Who nearly always has my heart when it's on TV.

I had to vote for Donna, even though I like Martha as well. Really, anyone but Rose would have been a viable recipient of votes. I like Donna because she travels for the sheer joy of exploring the universe, and she's compassionate and stubborn. Rose and Martha are both in it partially (or even mostly) because they think they can have a relationship with the Doctor... and while Martha is wise enough to get out, Rose has to be imprisoned in an alternate universe to be prised from the Doctor, and even then she whines about how her life is PERMANENTLY RUINED (or something) because screw her friends and family, she wanted the Time Lord! And I was so happy that she received a sending-off which meant she could never come back... and then... she came back. Oh well.

Hmm, I hope I haven't offended anyone with my anti-Rose tirade. xD The character didn't irritate me in the beginning, at least, it was only when she got very clingy with the Doctor. I don't think Martha was ever clingy regarding the Doctor, which is why I prefer her so much. More of an independent person.

Donna was, I thought, hands down the best companion I’ve seen so far. They removed the emo!UST that generated some of the words aspects of Tennant!Doctor, and made her actually useful, instead of an appendage to be mocked/rescued/emo’d over (Martha, Rose and Rose). Donna wasn’t as bright as the Doctor but she didn’t stand for being called a monkey and certainly didn’t stand for the Doctor’s whining about his hard life. She challenged his simplistic morality and was willing to take on moral responsibilities – plus she loved the traveling, not for the Doctor’s sake but for her own.

I accepted her story arc, down to the tragic end but I despised the fact that the last shot in the end of ‘Journey’s End’ was little emo!Doctor crying in the rain. The grief there wasn’t about him.

(I have to admit that I don’t much like Tennant!Doctor and I’m liking him less as time goes on)

As for Christina? I found her smug. I hate smug.

Yes, Donna definitely got the best writing and concept as a companion, though I'm fonder of Martha's overall arc when you take in TW and S4. I would have been more okay with Donna's end if she'd been allowed any agency in the matter whatsoever, but -- not so much.

I seriously cannot wait for Matth Smith and Moffat to take over, I agree.

Confidence/arrogance rarely bugs me in characters, especially when it's accompanied with competence or used to show up other arrogant characters -- it's cheap writing sometimes, but I like it when characters shut the Doctor up or do things against his wishes that actually work. That plus Michelle Ryan and the fact I'm a bit into thievery at the moment thanks to Leverage made her a bit of a hit for me.

Heh, no worries! Some of the character arcs the new series goes for drive me a bit crazy too.

As much as I love Sally, I had to cast a vote for Elton. Martha Jones won the other for me with ease.

When it comes to New Who companions it's Donna all the way for me. Martha was OK and Rose just became unbearable.

Oh dear, I am slightly torn on whether to chose Donna or Martha.
