I ran two vidshows at this year's Nine Worlds - a Star Trek show co-curated with [personal profile] shinyjenni, and the now-annual evening fanvid show on the fanfic track.

Thursday: Vid Long and Prosper - Laid-back Star Trek fanvid fun

playlist )

Friday: Fanvid Showing - Amy returns with a roundup of the year’s fanvids

playlist )

If you enjoyed watching those vidshows at the con, you might want to come along to Vidukon next summer! A cosy weekend convention in Cardiff where we sit and watch lots of vidshows interspersed with interesting panels and fannish hangouts. Lots of non-vidders attend, although some people do find themselves picking it up afterwards!
such_heights: pepper in profile in an office (mcu: pepper potts [corporate spy])
So last weekend was Vidukon and it was really delightful. It was so nice to get the train with the London fangirl collective and see lots of familiar faces as well as meet some first time attendees like [profile] fray_adjacent and [personal profile] odessie.

Because Lithium Doll is some kind of wizard, you can enjoy the entire con from the comfort of your own home via the website, with links to the vids shown in each show, and notes up for some of the panels and even a video of Sunday's Year in Vidding panel that I ran.

Some personal favourite new-to-me vids over the weekend were:

Sexyback by [personal profile] odessie (Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries)

Goody Two Shoes by [personal profile] laurashapiro and [livejournal.com profile] pipsqueaky (due South)

Creating Something Beautiful by sinycatarina (Studio Ghibli)

Long Live by [personal profile] cosmic_llin (Star Trek) - I put the premieres show together so I knew this was going to be a hit, but seeing a lot of the room in tears as the lights came up was still quite something. I just, I have an awful lot of Star Trek feelings and this vid captures *all of them*, it's overwhelming. <333

The whole premieres show was really wonderful, a great range of sources and mood.

Other highlights included getting to watch the Aims Project all in order on the big screen, watching I Swear in a big group - the reactions of the people who know what's coming and the people who don't are equally priceless, and being happily encased in a bubble of vid squee for a whole weekend.

The vid show that I put together was Same Song, Different Source. I wasn't sure how this was going to play out - would people find it repetitive? Did it invite people to put the vids in competition? But it seemed to go down well, and interestingly multiple people said that it enhanced the way that they read and understood vids, particularly the second vids in the pairs. So that was really cool.

I'm delighted that all of us in the concom are keen to keep running this every year now, and also figure out how to expand it a little so that we can afford to sustain and grow what we can do. Vids! Con! Whee! \o/

It was my birthday on Wednesday! Thank you everyone who left well wishes for me on various corners of the internet. <3

[personal profile] purplefringe made me the most epic Captain America vid of all time. It's to Don't Stop Believin', it's Steve/Sam, it's all my hopes and dreams in fanvid form. :D :D :D :D

And [personal profile] raven wrote me a wonderful DS9 Kira/Dax story, Signal Fire, which is beautiful and gave me many feelings.

Also [personal profile] happydork has taken up knitting and is filling our home with joy. There's a TARDIS all for me and a Jaegar so far.

+ Boy With A Coin by [personal profile] chaila (T:TSCC, James Ellison)
A lovely, lyrical look at Ellison and his strange robot family.

+ Ça Plane Pour Moi by [personal profile] purplefringe (SGA, John Sheppard)
OH JOHN. YOUR STUPID FACE. :D

+ Don't Tell Me Where You've Been (Just Show Me What You Know) by [personal profile] laurashapiro (Doctor Who, River/Eleven)
Fun and sexy and awesome! Just like them.

+ Born Too Late by [livejournal.com profile] bironic (Deep Space Nine, ensemble)
A lovely, wistful, fun vid for [community profile] kink_bingo's historical roleplay square.

+ If You're The Captain by [personal profile] thingswithwings (Voyager, Janeway/everyone)
This is DELIGHTFUL, and for [community profile] kink_bingo's service square.
such_heights: amy and rory looking at a pile of post (trek: sulu)
Still taking questions for the fifteen characters in wacky situations meme!

---

Recs! These both fall into the category of 'write what you know', which is an AWESOME category of fic that I really love, yet feel strangely self-conscious about trying myself. But here's how to do it!

A New Low by [livejournal.com profile] rosemaryandrue (Merlin, Arthur/Merlin, Gwen/Morgana)
Written for this prompt at kinkme_merlin, which asked for diabetic!Merlin stuck in a lift with Arthur. It grew from there.

Given what's been going on with me the past couple of weeks, this was JUST what the doctor ordered! It's a delightful modern AU with great characters, a ton of geek references and a very sweet developing relationship.

Heel Turn by [personal profile] brownbetty (Star Trek Reboot, Kirk, Sulu, ensemble)
Eventually, they discover it's all McCoy's fault. "What!" he protests. "He came to me with his hand sliced open from that damn pig-sticker of his, and I told him to find a hobby with fewer monomolecular edges! It's sound medical advice!"

OH MAN, I miss the tone of this fandom so much, and this totally delivers. SULU! *draws all the hearts* But everyone gets to be awesome in this.

---

I was reading the above whilst chatting to [personal profile] avendya, and then we got onto the topic of what hobbies other characters might enjoy:

oh god why did I just bookmark Sulu knitting fanfic )

You Only Disappear by [personal profile] chaila (Doctor Who; River/Doctor)

Completely gorgeous, and the song choice is perfect. RIVER!

I Wish I Was James Bond by [personal profile] kuwdora (Deep Space 9; Bashir)

eeee, Julian! Who DOES want to be James Bond oh my goodness, this vid is so much fun and also insightful and also full of love. <3

This Chain of Days by [livejournal.com profile] beccatoria (Star Wars; Padme)

Part of beccatoria's month of vidding awesome, this is something she did for a prompt of mine and I love it! It's so nice to be able to fob off one's ideas onto talented vidders and then watch them over and over.

Again, everything else she's made this month is well worth checking out, but I admit a special squeeful fondness for Harbour (Doctor Who; Amy/Rory) because eeeee!!! (I don't even know about this batshit for canon het ships phase I appear to be going through, but I'm rolling with it!)

The Crowded Hour by [livejournal.com profile] sabaceanbabe (Doctor Who; ensemble)

So Tom McRae makes for some great Who vids, it turns out! This is really beautiful and such a gentle look at all the arcs and characters of the last season. OH MY SHOW.
such_heights: gwen (merlin) grinning, text reads 'glee!)' (m: gwen [glee])
Okay, so project watch all the vids and also project feedback all the vids are both kind of time-consuming and may have to wait until I return from my travels, but here are some recs! I can do that bit!

The Pioneers by [personal profile] giandujakiss (Torchwood, team)

To plagarise myself from my [livejournal.com profile] torchwood_house rec: The editing in this vid is incredibly skillful, and the music choice is wonderful - an unnerving reworking of the Bloc Party original. It tackles a lot of the big themes present throughout Torchwood - life, death, playing God, the innocence of children - and weaves them all together, leaving the final, devastating footage from CoE looking like an inevitable consequence of all that has come before. We will not be the last, indeed.

Brand New Day by [livejournal.com profile] humansrsuperior (Doctor Who, Eleven, Amy)

This is like happiness bottled up. Squee! Flail! Love! Etc. *draws sparkly hearts*

Good In My Head by [livejournal.com profile] meddow (Deep Space Nine, Kira)

This is a classic-feeling and wonderfully executed character study of Kira - her convinction, her faith, the journey she goes on throughout the series. Just lovely.

And finally, denizens of the interwebs, I am pleased and proud to inform you that I have successfully coaxed [personal profile] avendya over to the dark side of the force, and here is her first vid. It is, unsurprisingly, brilliant.

Blood Makes Noise by [personal profile] avendya (Merlin, Morgana)

This is a great, compact insightful look at Morgana - the fuckery that is her life at Camelot, and about her learning to break free from it. The song choice is brilliant, as is the editing, but what I think I love most is how it uses various figures in Morgana's life whilst keeping the focus resolutely on her and her own agency. It's pretty great. Go give a new vidder some love!
such_heights: amy and rory looking at a pile of post (m: gwen [shining])
Here is a reclist of the year, of sorts. Below are a selection of fanworks that made me laugh, cry, flail, think, ache, rejoice and love over the course of the year. Below are romances, character studies, sweeping epics, AUs, meta, dance numbers, transitions, friendships, monsters, politics, zombies, and of course, robots. (There are always robots.)

Some of them are very famous, some only have a handful of comments. I love them all, because they all define what the past year in fandom was for me. There are a dozen fandoms represented here, and hopefully there's something for everyone. It's also worth noting that this list is defined by what's not included almost as much as what is - there were so many things I couldn't fit in! A lot of the time, I just couldn't pick only one story by a favourite author to include. (In one case, a certain author's best story is still sitting on my hard drive waiting for me to finish my beta.) My point is, this is in no way definitive, or even really a 'best of'. Just, here are some stories and some vids that I liked. Enjoy!

20 stories! )

13 vids! )

Thank you to all the authors, vidders, beta readers and cheerleaders that made the above possible, and here's to the stories to come in 2010. ♥

+ Thing one, recs!

Graduate Vulcan for Fun and Profit by [livejournal.com profile] lazulisong (Star Trek Reboot, Kirk gen)

I suspect this has been linked all over the place, but it's just the most brilliant Reboot fic I've read in some time. It made me tear up, it made me think, it made me laugh like a drain. LOVE.

Vid insta-rec: Imma Be by [livejournal.com profile] talitha78 (Leverage, Hardison, Parker, Eliot)

This is bouncy and completely charming, and if [livejournal.com profile] talitha78 wants to keep vidding all of my OT3s, that would be fine.

+ Thing two, there is a send postcards to Katie and Angel project! I very much approve.

+ Thing three, there's this show that I love. It's about a young man who discovers he has a magic destiny, a woman with really good hair and magical powers-- and no, it's not Merlin. I have fallen into the sweet, sweet embrace of Legend of the Seeker, and I'm kind of startled by how much I love it. I'd write a pimping post, but ignipes made the most epic and hilarious post ever about why you should watch it (featuring chickens! magical red dildos! Richard's adorable face! Kahlan's badassery!)

What I would say is, you have to have a healthy appreciation of often-cheesy high fantasy (and I love that shit, so I'm golden). But once you get into it the plot arc is compelling - indeed, each episode has consequences for the plot and the characters, shocking! - the leads are all great, and there's a whole host of fabulous guest stars. A lot of women being kickass in very different ways, a reasonable amount of variation on villain-of-the-week, and there are even some characters who aren't white and don't die! I think it is especially soothing for me right now because it deftly avoids all the things that are irritating me with Merlin.

Also, KAHLAN > EVERYONE.

+ Thing four, I have Google Wave invites! If anyone wants one, drop a comment or an email (such.heights at gmail dot com) with your email address.

+ [personal profile] copperbadge is hosting an online job fair, which is bringing forth a host of resources in any number of different fields and countries. Go see if you have some advice to offer, or something relevant to you. If anyone wants to chat to me about UK law conversion, NGOs or think tanks, please do.

+ Recs!

-- A Beginner's Guide to Vulcan Sexual Practice, by Captain James T. Kirk by [personal profile] thingswithwings [Star Trek Reboot, Kirk/Spock, explicit]

Hee! Okay, so this is based on the crazy non-kink community that was doing the rounds for a few days, and the result is delightful. It is beautifully characterised and hot and Uhura is very much there, which is always a requirement for me with Reboot K/S fic, and basically I love it lots.

-- Here Comes The Sun by [livejournal.com profile] miakun [Merlin, Gwen/Morgana, R]

This is futurefic with OT4 in the background and a pregnant Gwen and it is made of sunshine and happiness. ♥

-- VID: Spaceman by [livejournal.com profile] kaydeefalls [Doctor Who/Torchwood]

This is beautiful. It's full of visual parallels and rarely-used shots and gorgeous musicality. The vid is full of so much heart that it made me fall in love with both shows all over again.
such_heights: amy and rory looking at a pile of post (m: gwen [bzuh?])
+ Goodness, I've just realised I haven't told you all to watch [livejournal.com profile] talithia78's latest vid yet. Apple Candy, Star Trek Reboot, Kirk/Spock/Uhura, it makes me CRY and sigh happily and ship those three like crazy.

+ Star Trek Gag Reel! I love that cast SO MUCH I can't even tell you. <33333 (Dear Zachary Quinto: please be my bff. Love and kisses, me.)

+ I haven't had a chance to read this yet, but this looks like an interesting interview with Alexander Siddig.

+ Ahahaha, okay, I am having quite a bit of fun at the Merlin character meme. Here's me.

+ Lastly, Yuletide nominations are open!!!

Boring admin:

Firstly, I've updated streaming and download links for Begin and The Good Old Days with, uh, files that have the correct aspect ratio. >.>

And second, you may have spotted that I've recently started redirecting comments to Dreamwidth. I'm thinking of it as a trial run for now, because I'm still undecided, but Dreamwidth is my journalling service of choice and I'd prefer to keep discussion together and have a single link for my fanworks, I think. I also think that the crossposting and OpenID compatibility of Dreamwidth should strike a good balance between convenience for me and convenience for any would-be commenter.

Incidentally while I'm on the subject, if anyone is still after a Dreamwidth invite code for any reason, drop me a comment or a PM with your email address and it shall be yours.

And now for some recs:

The Secession of Cornwall (soon-to-be officialised) by [livejournal.com profile] allothi [Merlin, Gwen/Morgana, PG]

:DD I am so pleased by this story, it is hilarious and very charming. I adore Gwen's voice in this so much.

In Search Of Elysium by [livejournal.com profile] phantomjam [Merlin, Gwen/Morgana, NC-17]

Plotty Gwen/Morgana fic! \o/ It's just the two of them, looking for some hard-won freedom, and the journey the characters go on both geographically and emotionally is beautifully told.

It's All In The Delivery by [livejournal.com profile] july_july_july [Star Trek Reboot, Spock/Uhura, Kirk, PG-13]

In which there are SPACE PIRATES. I laughed so hard - one line near the end nearly made me fall over.

Okay, my hard drive is now overflowing with new vids - here's the last of the VVC vids that I especially enjoyed.

Art Bitch by [livejournal.com profile] hollywoodgrrl [BSG]

A innovative and seriously funky look at Kara.

Can Delight by [livejournal.com profile] jescaflowne [multi-fandom]

Shiny, sparkly feminist cheerleaders!

Beautiful Dirty Rich by [livejournal.com profile] astolat and [livejournal.com profile] merryish [American Idol]

I'm not interested in American Idol really at all. And yet, Adam Lambert is kind of awesome, and this vid will tell you why!

I Want Candy by [livejournal.com profile] laurashapiro [multi-fandom]

Hee! This may not turn my personal crank but it's delightful - lots of guys I like, being hot by being brainy or well-dressed or undressed or athletic or whatever, it's very fun.

Lead Balloon by [livejournal.com profile] sweetestdrain [Doctor Who]

It's a Mickey vid! *draws sparkly hearts*

Mothership by [livejournal.com profile] laurashapiro [Doctor Who]

This is brilliant. The song itself is very cool - entirely acapella! I love Laura's clip choices and the exuberant, celebratory rush from start to finish.

Swing by [livejournal.com profile] marycrawford [Star Trek: TOS]

Uhura! Montages! Great music choice! ♥

Red Cliff by [livejournal.com profile] obsessive24 [Red Cliff]

This is absolutely gorgeous, both with the source footage and the editing, and I love the musicality.

Say Hey (I Love You) by [livejournal.com profile] sdwolfpup [The Obamas]

Yes, you read the fandom right. SO CUTE OMG.

I'm Not Dead by [livejournal.com profile] dualbunny [BSG]

The final part of [livejournal.com profile] dualbunny's Kara trilogy! I've been eagerly looking forward to this one for months and it did not disappoint. The vid is beautifully done and layered and kind of heartbreaking, but mostly it's Kara, in S4, being awesome. HI STARBUCK HI ILU. *sparkly hearts everywhere*

Hard Sun by [livejournal.com profile] bradcpu and [personal profile] laurashapiro [Firefly]

This is amazing. It's about the show, but more about its fandom, and it's really aching and wonderful.

The Long Spear by [personal profile] jmtorres and [personal profile] niqaeli [Star Trek]

WOW. This, like Hard Sun, is about the fandom as much as the show, and I love it so much. If you're a Trek fan, you have to see this. (It totally made me tear up, as well - a lot of these vids did, but this one I'll fess up to.)

Star Trek In 60 Seconds (Re-enacted by Llamas) by [livejournal.com profile] halcyon_shift and many others.

The intro to the Premiers show. TOTAL GENIUS. If the title doesn't make you click, then I don't even wanna know you. *g*

Bale Out Christian Bale Remix by [livejournal.com profile] kiki_miserychic [Dollhouse]

Dollhouse isn't my show or anything, but this is really interesting - the audio alone makes it worth watching, and the editing's spectacular.

Army Of Me by [livejournal.com profile] halcyon_shift [The Sarah Connor Chronicles]

Oh wow, this is a seriously great look at Sarah and Cameron and what they put into protecting John, and the toll it takes on the three of them and everyone around them.

We Are by [livejournal.com profile] bananainpyjamas [The Sarah Connor Chronicles]

This is my show, right here. The complex relationships between humans and machines, Ellison and Weaver and John Henry and Cameron and Sarah, and the overlays and musicality of this are spectacular.

Acid Intro by [livejournal.com profile] millylicious [multi-fandom]

This reminds me of [livejournal.com profile] sol_se's Filthy Mind in its free-association, clubhouse vibe, and that's entirely meant as a compliment to both vidders. This is a total adrenaline rush, primarily made out of sources I know, which always makes me happy, and it's so much fun to watch.
such_heights: amy and rory looking at a pile of post (trek: uhura [fantastipink])
Some vids I've been enjoying recently:

Starlight by [livejournal.com profile] buffyann [dance movies]
Dancing is all they want.

An older vid I've stumbled on, it's probably some of the best straight-up kinetic editing I've seen to date.

DLZ by [livejournal.com profile] bop_radar [Sarah Connor Chronicles]
We are the Resistance.

This is dense and smart and I love it a whole lot, just like the show.

When I Ruled The World by [livejournal.com profile] di_br [Doctor Who]
I really wanted to make a vid comparing and contrasting both Doctors, showing just how much he's changed and yet how much of him still stayed intact. This is Ten looking back on his time as the Ninth Doctor, realizing how much he's changed since then and wondering if it was all for the better.

I like vids that remind me that I kind of like that Tenth Doctor guy really. Also, Nine!

Steady As She Goes by [livejournal.com profile] jesuit24 [Star Trek TOS]
Look out for dramatic!Kirk, Spock keeping his pimping hand strong, Bones drinking as well as some hideous alien villains.

Ha, this is fun! The Testimonial Meme:

In case you're not really familiar with how a testimonial works, when you reply, it should go something like, "Amber is so awesome, she once saved 16 lolcats from a fire and then banged Kelly Clarkson, Karl Urban, and David Cook in one day." Or ya know, whatever. You can be off the wall creative or you can keep it real with truthy facts. Both ways are totally cool and desirable. YOU ARE DESIRABLE, MY FRIEND.

I should definitely have been working, but instead I just saw my birthday in by writing a little more of the totally self-indulgent genderswapped Star Trek story I've got going - based, of course, on [livejournal.com profile] liviapenn's picspam of epic win.

While I'm here, an offering - Star Trek stories that have made me laugh, often loudly and in public places. *draws sparkly hearts around shiny new fandom*

Although Jim’s attendance and exam performance were of an acceptable standard, he does not seem to understand that safety rules are there for a reason, and that it is not possible to cause a ship to exceed its manufacturer’s expectations by personal charm alone.
