such_heights: the golden snitch (hp: snitch)
Yeah, I think I'm just going to spam you all with other people's awesome fic this week, as that's how I'm procrastinating on my own submissions. Cool? Cool.

Doctor Who:
The Kleptomaniac Time Traveller's Club, by [livejournal.com profile] netgirl_y2k [Romana, Christina, G]
“A quick word of advice, if you ever find yourself travelling the universe with a kleptomaniac keep a close eye on any valuables.”

There's nothing in that header that is not fantastic, am I right? This is so much fun, and as I said to [livejournal.com profile] netgirl_y2k, a spin-off I totally want to watch.

*

A couple of things from [livejournal.com profile] lgbtfest:

Harry Potter:
Live Every Day, by [livejournal.com profile] mindabbles. [Alice/various, R]
There are all kinds of families. She knows that better than most. Sometimes it is love that ties them together, and sometimes it's comfort or needing each other. Sometimes it's music and stories shared around a fire.

I want to say all sorts of intelligent things about this story, but I haven't quite found the words yet. It's gorgeous, and a brilliant example of something that's completely canon-compliant but doesn't fit the standard backstory we assign these characters.

*

Leverage:
The Epiphany Job, by [livejournal.com profile] shrift. [Alec/Eliot, PG-13]
"When he rolled out of bed that afternoon, heated up some Philly Steak & Cheese Hot Pockets for breakfast, and then went to the office, Alec Hardison was not expecting to experience a paradigm shift."

The characterisation in this makes me wriggle with glee. \o/

*

You know, I'm pretty sure I had no intention whatsoever of getting into another fandom. I mean, I watched Leverage and loved it and everything, but the fic just had to go and be amazing, didn't it? Sigh. My life, so hard. *g*

(On that note - guys, seriously, watch Leverage. It's about hot thieves who steal things for Great Justice and it has teeeeam and multi-shipping and I am so in love with Parker and Eliot and Alec I can't even tell you.)

*

Moar Leverage recs:

Faint Heart Never Won Fair Lady, by [livejournal.com profile] hackthis. [Parker/Maggie, Alec/Eliot, PG-13]
"I called her on her cell phone and said I thought her hair was shiny, and she smelled nice, and did she want to have dinner sometime?"

Working Without a Net, by [livejournal.com profile] facetofcathy. [Alec/Eliot, Adult]
When they're not off on a job, Eliot and Parker drop by a lot, and by some secret code or psychic connection or the alignment of the stars, usually at about the same time.

The Way to a Man's Heart, by [livejournal.com profile] merle_p. [Alec/Eliot, R]
(or: Five times Eliot Spencer cooked for Alec Hardison)

Courtship, by [livejournal.com profile] with_a_kay [Alec/Parker, PG]
He brings her flowers. No boy has ever brought her flowers before.

It's All So Clear to Me Now, by [livejournal.com profile] fools_game. [Alec/Eliot, Nate/Sophie, PG]
Parker sees more than some people think.

*

I need a Leverage icon.
such_heights: amy and rory looking at a pile of post (tw: tosh blue)
I keep deciding that I will sit down and write out some recs for [livejournal.com profile] lgbtfest, but then my tabs keep multiplying as everyone keeps posting wonderful stuff. \o/ Clearly I'll be doing in this batches, here's the first lot. I've only had time to read the transgendered stuff so far, so here's ome of the things I've read there already and loved, on something of a theme:

Discworld

Modern Love, by [livejournal.com profile] penknife
Discworld ensemble ; PG-13
It's amazing how the world rarely gets less complicated.

[livejournal.com profile] penknife takes on issues of queerness and gender presentation in the dwarf community and brings a thoroughly enjoyable story to life with her usual lightness of touch.

Iron Man

Walking in these Shoes, by [livejournal.com profile] redfiona99
Pepper/Tony ; PG ; spoilers for the film
Pepper Potts is the woman she'd always wanted to be. It's probably not all Tony's fault that her well-ordered life has just been blown to pieces. But it's definitely mostly his fault.

Not only is this a thoughtful and kick-ass study of Pepper, it also features explosions. That's all you really need to make me a happy reader.

Supernatural

Now You're a Man, by [livejournal.com profile] cho_malfoy
Dean ; PG ; spoilers for 4x01
Dean completed a journey in the body he was born with, but just because he's started a new journey doesn't mean he's likely to forget the last one.

I love Dean in this, I love the style, and I love the twist on the fourth season presented here: I know it's one I'd loved to have watched.

Turn The Page, by [livejournal.com profile] messageredacted
Sam/Dean ; NC-17 ; AU of the pilot
Sam hasn’t seen his sister in four years. A lot more has changed than he ever imagined.

Sam/Dean is not particularly my thing, but this is a very good story. The retelling of the pilot is very nicely done, and there's a lot of detail and pitch-perfect interaction here.

Torchwood

What He Should Have Been, by [livejournal.com profile] sunnyrea
Ianto, Ianto/Lisa, Ianto/Jack ; PG-13
When Ianto was a little girl all he wanted was to be able to wear his father's suits. Now he does, but his family doesn't want anything to do with him.

This story's got a lot of heart to it, and it makes me smile. Oh, Ianto.

Also, not connected to the fest but nonetheless a great story - Little Sister by [livejournal.com profile] invisible_lift, a beautifully-written family history for Tosh.

[livejournal.com profile] sambethe has my undying gratitude for bringing this GEM of a fic to my attention. It is the story of my heart, my dreams, my soul! It's fall-over-laughing funny! Omg yes.

It’s Not A Déjà-vu, It’s The Time Warp by [livejournal.com profile] pforte
Merlin/Torchwood/Harry Potter ; Merlin/Arthur, Jack/Ianto, Remus/Sirius ; R

"We’re secondary characters in a children’s fantasy series. Remus doesn’t like the name but we’re calling this little group PISSA. Means Popular and Ill-treated Slash Ships Anonymous."

"A self-help group for the unluckily slashed," Remus added helpfully.

If you're a fan of any of the three ships featured here, you'll love this. If you're a fan/familiar with all three, it's like hitting the Jackpot of Awesome. [livejournal.com profile] pforte nails it - the fanon cliches, the ridiculousness, the way all three ships are exactly the same when it comes to badfic, and the whole thing is so wry and well-done and comedy gold. Merlin gets possessed by a self-insert! Sirius is made to kiss girls! Jack's tired of re-enacting bad gay porn! Ahahahaha, [livejournal.com profile] pforte wins everything, the end.
such_heights: amy and rory looking at a pile of post (other: skyline)
first thing!

[livejournal.com profile] torchwood_house is running a vid awards ceremony to coincide with the Oscars (it is called, of course, the Jacks), and you can go have a look at all vids that have been recced so far on the community and vote for your favourites in various categories. It's over here at [livejournal.com profile] twh_votes, and there are some very excellent works there. (Also a couple of mine, but this is not a 'go vote for me' post.)

Speaking of [livejournal.com profile] torchwood_house, I'll now be reccing there from time to time, which should be fun. I have started out my career with [livejournal.com profile] out_there's Underwear Not Required (Bra Optional), which is -- well, it's really awesome genderfuck porn, is what it is. I have a big list of fic and vids to get through, and shall work out some method of cross-pollination in due course.

---

second thing!

[livejournal.com profile] rivrea and [livejournal.com profile] sundayave gave me five things they associate with me for me to talk about. rivrea asked - Sheffield, vidding, femslash, Doctor Who companions, Avendya )

sundayave asked - the Marauders, Radiohead, presenting a radio show, travelling, writing )

---

eta: third thing! The Torchwood Europop band I mentioned the other day now has a tour poster and album cover, because [livejournal.com profile] prettyquotable is wicked awesome. Hahaha, it is amazing.
such_heights: amy and rory looking at a pile of post (sga: john/rodney)
I am looking at the final episodes of SGA. They are looking at me. I am not sure who will win. I am contemplating just watching Vegas now. I am contemplating just watching the finale now. I am contemplating speeding through all four of them this evening. Oh, show, what am I to do with you? Well, hopefully sit down and really write some fic about it at some point. ... which would sort of require me being caught up on all the canon first. Right then.

***

They are spreading like a disease around the internet at the moment, and I must ask, what is with the horrible, horrible Eleventh Doctor manips? (Well, that's a question for the ages: what is with horribly-done manipulated photography, at all, ever.) I say this with no bias against particular ships or anything, because sweet lord they are not limited to one ship, more is the pity. Personally I am not the greatest fan of manips in general, but hey, I'm often impressed with how well they're done and in those instances they do me the kindness of not burning my eyes. (Petty complaint is petty.)

Anyway, you know the times really are changing when there's an Eleventh Doctor section on Teaspoon, gosh. 'But wait!' I hear you say. 'How can there be Eleven fic? There can't be good Eleven fic, surely? How would you even write it?' And mostly I would be inclined to agree. But the last question is answered if you are [livejournal.com profile] paperclipbitch, and you write No Straight And Narrow, and then you win the internet. Thus, rec!

No Straight And Narrow by [livejournal.com profile] paperclipbitch
Eleven; Donna, Lucy, Sarah Jane, Martha, Jack ; PG ; 5000 words
The Doctor isn’t entirely sure who he is, but he does know who he was.

This wins both for the author's take on what Eleven might be like (to which my response is YES PLZ Moffat are you listening?) and also for his interactions with old acquaintances, which are thoughtful, apt, funny, and often a little heartbreaking.
such_heights: amy and rory looking at a pile of post (other: woodland snow)
It occurred to me, whilst replying to comments for a flame in two cupped hands the other day, that I have written stories about Sirius at Christmas three years in a row for holiday exchanges, and they all run on something of a theme, namely that Sirius loves his friends, his makeshift family, so very much. That's probably one of the things that makes me fall the very hardest for characters, that complete, fierce love and devotion, even when it's ill-expressed. See also: Jack Harkness, Lyra & Will, Kaylee Frye, John Sheppard, Luna Lovegood, Dean Winchester, etc.

I like seasonal-themed fic, any time of year, and all the wintry and Christmas stories at the moment are delighting me. I have [livejournal.com profile] teand's A Midnight Clear (Supernatural) open in tabs which looks great already. Also there is [livejournal.com profile] copperbadge's The Gift Of The Mad Guy (Doctor Who) which is entirely wacky and fun. Should the Christmas special on Thursday not thrill me, I shall simply imagine that this was on my TV instead.

Speaking of the Christmas special, I'm not actually all that excited about it. I mean, I will sit down and watch it on time, obviously, and no doubt enjoy it, but I will miss my companions! And I'm so hugely looking forward to a new regeneration that I'm probably not appreciating Tennant's last hours in the role, heh. Still! Cybermen in the snow, that should be entertaining. (Oh, as a note: I haven't watched any of the preview clips and very few of the trailers, so please don't spoil me!)

Anyway, I now return to working on the charming tale of a very Torchwood Christmas, in which there are in-laws, and Rhys has a run-in with alien tentacles. (Not that sort of run-in, you'll be relieved to hear.) Hopefully that will be posted this evening, timing being of the essence and all that.

Oh, and lastly, for neatness: [livejournal.com profile] sheafrotherdon had a SGA cold!fest the other day which resulted in the following little comment!fic - That Time When The Team Had To Snuggle For Warmth. Teeeeam! :D

And I didn't even mention Merlin once, I am so proud. Mostly because this entry is garnering enough tags as it is.
such_heights: amy and rory looking at a pile of post (dw: martha light)
So, um, yes. Despite my very best intentions I ended up writing Merlin finale!fic last night. Oh dear. But dipping into a new fandom is always fun, and I shall answer comments soon!

(I know I keep promising it, but really, promo post coming soon. I actually don't have time to screencap and so on right now.)

---

Onto content that is not (entirely) Merlin related! I'm constructing a vid playlist for when I go home, because it is traditional that I inflict a few fanvids on my dad every time I go back. Playing vids to people is one of my favourite things to do, when they're sufficiently geeky in a non-fandom way that I think they'd appreciate them. But it's really an art form, and my selections for offline friends has always been a bit hit and miss.

wow, this got long )

The list as it now stands:

To Touch The Face Of God by [livejournal.com profile] destina (fandom: space!)

I have no idea why I haven't shown him this already. It's gorgeous and incredibly easy to watch, and a must-see for anyone interested in space, which we both certainly are.

Meet the Doctor by [livejournal.com profile] humansrsuperior (fandom: Doctor Who)

Well this is just adorable. It's short and fun and I always love what [livejournal.com profile] humansrsuperior does with sound and dialogue.

Shine by [livejournal.com profile] humansrsuperior (fandom: Doctor Who)

To my embarrassment, my dad is a big fan of Take That's comeback stuff. (I mean, I quite like it, but really now.) And this is the sort of vid that actively invites you to appreciate the clips in their original context as it pulls out all sorts of moments from the programme.

OMG! by [livejournal.com profile] obsessive24 (fandom: Doctor Who)

Ahahaha, okay, I only found this vid quite recently and it is so, so hilarious and the editing is incredible! You can't possibly like the programme and not love this, I swear.

Destiny Calling by [livejournal.com profile] charmax (multfandom: superheroes)

We watch a lot of superhero films, my dad and I, and dude. This vid has The Incredibles. Instant win!

Run For Your Life by [livejournal.com profile] hollywoodgrrl (fandom: Ashes To Ashes)

[livejournal.com profile] hollywoodgrrl strikes again with the mash-up and fantastic editing to match!

-- I did say this post wasn't going to be entirely Merlin-free, didn't I? And lo and behold, my parents have been watching the programme. Needless to say I am pleased by this turn of events!

Beverly Hills by [livejournal.com profile] giandujakiss (fandom: Merlin)

This is the perfect introduction to the show, and it's breezy and witty and lots and lots of fun. Beverly Hills! That's where Merlin wants to be! :D

Red by [livejournal.com profile] obsessive24 (fandom: Merlin)

a;lsdkja, this just got posted this morning and IT'S AMAZING. Beautifully put together, and my dad's a big Elbow fan, I think he'll get a kick out of this.

And then, as he'll no doubt ask, I'll dig out a vid or two of mine as well. I was on holiday with the family when I made 'Love Is All You Need', and he got quite into the whole concept of editing video and how it worked. I'm not sure if he'll really get 'The Book Of Love' or 'Tristan' otherwise I'd probably show him those, but I do think that he'll like 'Butterflies and Hurricanes' and it's a good demonstration of the fact my editing abilities have progressed since I started, hurrah!

Vids:

All These Things That I've Done, by [livejournal.com profile] kaydeefalls
Doctor Who & Torchwood, Jack

[livejournal.com profile] kaydeefalls has been slinking over to join us on the dark side for a while now, and now she has made this vid, and it is awesome! It's a really loving, affectionate portrayal of Jack and the people he cares about, with some great editing, lyric match-ups and a real sense of the fun and drama of the show.

I Enjoy Being A Girl, by [livejournal.com profile] absolutedestiny
Battlestar Galactica/Veronica Mars/Firefly/Buffy/Alias

An old vid I stumbled upon recently. Out of the five sources used, Firefly's the only one I know well - I've seen a handful of episodes of both BSG and Buffy, and none whatsoever of Veronica Mars and Alias. That doesn't at all affect the fact I adore this! It's really cleverly put together, very skillfully edited throughout, and with the overall message of Starbuck, Veronica, Zoe, Buffy and Sydney kick ass and take names, remain awesome while doing so, I can't not love it. A great, great watch.

Fic:

Zig Zags, by [livejournal.com profile] hanuueshe
Doctor Who/Torchwood ; Jack, Ianto, the Doctor
Endings are subjective when you travel in time...

This is a scenario I've read however many times before. [livejournal.com profile] hanuueshe's version might just be my new favourite. It's the tone of this that gets me - it never overplays the angst, there are some very silly moments but it's not crack, and most of all the characterisation is just perfect. Oh, and it features Ianto going on adventures with the Doctor, which is an instant win.

No, We Did Not Rush Forward Into That Good Night. We May Have Powerwalked Though, by [livejournal.com profile] skellerbvvt
Doctor Who ; Jack/Doctor, Jack/His Own Sexual Frustration (no, really) ; R
The Doctor was a tease. An alien tease, which was the worst kind. For some reason. He was. Yes you are, Doctor, don't deny it. One word for you, pal; TONGUE. This conversation had never occurred, save in Fantasy 55.

BWAHAHAHA. Yeah, first off this is hysterical. And if you've never met [livejournal.com profile] skellerbvvt's take on Jack's internal monologue before, you're in for a particular treat. But what I kind of love about this is that like all the best crack it's in-character and really plausible. And it makes my shippy little heart happy, too.

-- Happy, happy birthday to [livejournal.com profile] snegurochka_lee for yesterday, [livejournal.com profile] elvenkitty for today and [livejournal.com profile] nk_aeode for tomorrow! ♥ ♥ ♥ I hope you all celebrate wonderfully.

-- I forgot to mention before, I'm reccing on [livejournal.com profile] calufrax all this week, a great community that highlights Whoniverse stories hosted on Teaspooon.

-- I'm working on too many things with not enough time, what else is new, and I do wish I could just sit down and take something right the way through the end as opposed to continually tacking small bits onto about half a dozen projects.

-- Said flitting around probably explains why more SGA fic decided to write itself last night:

The Twilight & The Peace
Stargate: Atlantis ; John/Rodney ; 1100 words ; a snippet of the far future for [livejournal.com profile] mcsmooch
"You're a sentimental old fool, you do know that?"

Two additions to the Muse/Doctor Who vid OTP project:

Glorious [Rose, Martha, Donna] by [livejournal.com profile] rhoboat

Epic does not even BEGIN. This is entirely perfect and shiver-inducing and wow - oh Rose, oh Martha, oh Donna. I LOVE THEM SO MUCH.

Scattered [Tenth Doctor] by [livejournal.com profile] di_br, to 'Map of the Problematique'

Oh man, you should have seen me after I watched this through for the first time, I was the living embodiment of flail. Oh, Ten, you and your epic cosmic angst will be sorely missed.

And also Shine by [livejournal.com profile] humansrsuperior, which is just SO HAPPY after the angst of the previous two.

*

Pushing Daisies vids!

Angel With An Attitude [Chuck] and Modern Nature [Ned/Chuck] by [livejournal.com profile] charmax, and Open Your Eyes [Ned/Chuck] by [livejournal.com profile] di_br all capture the joy of the show so well. And so pretty! ♥

*

Really goofy and amazing SGA vids!

2 atoms in a molecule [John/Rodney] by [livejournal.com profile] zoetrope - this is so neat, with animation and arty bits and so on! There's even a singalong section.

Grace Kelly and I Won't Say I'm In Love [John/Rodney] by [livejournal.com profile] dkwilliams - two classic examples of 'you're using what song now?' that work absolutely beautifully and fill me with yay.

*

Also, SGA fic. I am so in love with this fandom at the moment, especially after Friday's episode, what with the spoilers! )

Many More, by [livejournal.com profile] sheafrotherdon
~ 970 words, John/Rodney, PG. Tag to 5x14: The Prodigal. Almost all dialogue taken directly from the show.

Finish Line, by [livejournal.com profile] dogeared
John/Rodney, 350 words, wee tiny tag to 5x14 - The Prodigal

Intentions, by [livejournal.com profile] cathalin
John/Rodney, PG. This is Ronon's and my attempt to fix some of what was, er, interesting, about Tracker.

Yeah, McKay/Sheppard is pretty much my drug of choice this week. :D

Anyone got cheerful recs of their own they'd like to share? I rather suspect we need them.

In conclusion:

I LOVE THIS ICON SO MUCH. Thank you, [livejournal.com profile] jhava, who also has STILL MOAR con photos over this way. :D

Oh, and while I'm here I might as well: [livejournal.com profile] copperbadge has done it again!

Not What You're Thinking, by [livejournal.com profile] sam_storyteller
PG-13, Jack/Ianto, Gwen, Tosh
Gwen can't help but ask. Ianto can't quite resist telling.

This is possibly the most plausible hide-and-seek explanation fic I've seen. Also with bonus stopwatches! And it made me howl with laughter too, so.

Also, he has started a new serial - The Theory Of Two Centres - which I am very excited about. May the blessings be bountiful on him and all those other prolific and talented souls.
such_heights: amy and rory looking at a pile of post (Default)
Oh man, the post that just went up at [livejournal.com profile] face_of_joe had me smiling for a full five minutes. I may not be heavily involved in SGA fandom, but it's hard to imagine there could possibly be a greater community out there. OH JOHN. ♥

The [livejournal.com profile] dw_femslash ficathon stories are going up right now, hurray. A couple of highlights so far:

Six Impossible Things, by [livejournal.com profile] netgirl_y2k
Donna/Romana, PG, spoilers for 'Journey's End'
My favourite impossible thing.

YES, basically. Lovely, lovely fix-it, because the Doctor doesn't always know everything.

Scattered all Across the Sands, by [livejournal.com profile] magicallaw
Rose/Martha, PG
She can see all of time and creation. At least, she thought she could.

Fragmented timelines and perfect characterisation and gorgeous writing, I'll be reading this one a few more times.

We All Want To Change The World, by [livejournal.com profile] st_aurafina
Martha/Ace, PG
After the Dalek invasion, Martha finds working for UNIT unsatisfying. Fortunately, Ace is playing by Perivale rules.

In which Ace is awesome, and there are both caves and chips, and Martha Makes A Decision. Light but layered, it's a lot of fun.

Totally unrelated, but a story I stumbled across earlier today and apparently missed out on when it was a big hit:

They Grip The Ground, by [livejournal.com profile] giddygeek
Team Torchwood, vaguely Jack/Ianto, PG

In which the team are trees, using their imaginations. Oh my heavens this is hysterical, and considering Torchwood canon, entirely plausible. Plus, this is so in-character it hurts. :D
such_heights: amy and rory looking at a pile of post (tw: jack)
Posted In September:

Late Bloom
Harry Potter ; Remus/Sirius ; PG-13 ; 10,000 words ; AU
Sirius, the dutiful eldest son of the mighty Black family, has almost entirely lost his own hopes and dreams. An unexpected meeting with a long-forgotten friend might just change everything.

I Heard A Whisper (The Way I Might Have Been)
Torchwood (& Doctor Who) ; Jack/Ianto ; PG-13 ; 10,000 words ; spoilers through 'Journey's End'
The whole world's in danger, if Ianto's to believe the bloke who's showed up claiming to be his time-travelling parallel universe boyfriend. It's the start of a funny old week.

The Alien-Fighters' Social Club
Torchwood/Stargate: Atlantis ; Team Torchwood & Team Sheppard ; PG-13 ; 2500 words
Sheppard and his team were to stay based with Torchwood Three until such a time as the Daedalus was in orbit. A chance to improve inter-organisational relations, apparently.

The Light In My Eyes Is Strange
Doctor Who ; Rose, Jack ; PG ; 1000 words ; 'Journey's End' missing scene
Rose knows the answer and it makes it hard to ask. "What have I done to you?"

Tristan, a Jack vid

---

I didn't get as many things finished off this month as I would have liked, which leaves me with a lot to attempt to rattle off before I am engulfed by NaNo. Top of the list are the sequel to 'Late Bloom' and the Ianto inna TARDIS (working title) story for [livejournal.com profile] cherryfeather.

---

And now, some recs. Because I always get excited when I find interesting or unusual Torchwood fic. (One of these days, when I've decided I definitely have the time, I want to look into starting up a sort of Torchwood version of [livejournal.com profile] quibbler_report.)

Call Me On Your Wedding Day, We'll Grow Flowers In The Morgue, by [livejournal.com profile] paperclipbitch
Torchwood, PG-13, Owen/Katie, Ianto/Lisa, Katie/Lisa
“We’re aftershocks.”

This is so perfectly Torchwood - odd, morbid, a little unsettling, and just very tragic. In which Owen and Ianto are left behind, and Jack is distant, and Katie and Lisa are just... elsewhere.

The Five Greatest Deaths of Jack Harkness' Life (Sort Of), by [livejournal.com profile] shadowsaine
Torchwood, PG-13, Jack/Ianto, Jack/others
Jack has done this dozens of times, every one different, every one the same. Except this time.

In which Jack tells stories. It's Jack/Ianto as a framing device, but really this is about Jack, his life and his many, many deaths, from the absurd to the heroic. It's also desperately sad by the end, you have been warned.

Flowers For His Mother, by [livejournal.com profile] happi_feet
Torchwood, G, Jack
"A stranger rolls into a small town on the Boeshane peninsula, and while his clothing and accent are strange he knows things most offworlders don't know, like how to perform the intricate tea ritual and all the old songs..."

In which Jack goes home. The writing of this is beautiful.

The Sins Of Adam, part one and part two, by [livejournal.com profile] neadods
Doctor Who, PG-13, Nine, Jack, Rose
So - what would the Doctor make of having Captain Jack running around his TARDIS, especially so soon after what happened with Adam in The Long Game?

The Doctor is perfect in this -- Nine! I miss you! -- and it's exactly the kind of thing glossed over by canon but perfect for fanfic. It's clever and funny and says an awful lot about the developing dynamic of the original OT3. [livejournal.com profile] neadods has got me pretty much convinced this must have happened.

Two stories from [livejournal.com profile] thestopwatch, which has played host to all sorts of fantastic fics:

A Process in the Weather
by anonymous at [livejournal.com profile] thestopwatch
Torchwood ; Jack/Ianto ; soft R ; 5,000 words ; Exit Wounds spoilers
Ianto knows all about the fragility of the human body; he knows how it bleeds and how it breaks. And he knows, as he thinks of the cold uncaring perfection of metal, that it is better than the alternative.

This is an absolutely beautiful story about grief, touch, and the rain.

*

Que Samsara, Sera
by anonymous at [livejournal.com profile] thestopwatch
Torchwood ; Jack/Ianto ; R ; 9,000 words
‘When all desire has vanished, a person will not be reborn anymore.’ Jack may be immortal, but Ianto Jones is nothing if not resourceful. If he can help it, Jack will never be alone again.

It's an idea that's been done a lot. This take on it works - it's strange and sad and not a little messed up, but gorgeous for it. It was posted two weeks ago and I'm still thinking about it.

I found this this morning, a product of the recent VividCon, and I can't stop watching it. Have I mentioned how much I'm falling in love with fanvids? Because really. They can be so, so very good. I can feel a big post coming on. In the meantime, this completely blew me away this morning.

No Such Gorram Thing, by anonymous at [livejournal.com profile] dw_cross, PG-13, Doctor Who/Firefly.

HBP delayed until summer '09, oh noes! I'm not really invested in the films per se, but they're a lot of fun through the visor of fandom, and something to get HP fandom buzzing a little post-series. Mind you, having it in the summer is no bad thing in my book - plenty of time for multiple viewings and inappropriate amusement. (Ah, the OotP film, in the Summer of Potter, watching it on the IMAX screen with [livejournal.com profile] bruadar and laughing way too much at Aberforth and the goats, good times.)

Speaking of HP, I just found a whole bunch of ficbits written for [livejournal.com profile] hogwarts_elite contests, some of which are probably worth posting. I should get on that.

I'm very excited about the Torchwood radio play, now confirmed for broadcast on September 10th as Radio 4's Afternoon Play (hahahaha what will the Radio 4 crowd make of it?). Written by Joseph Lidster, previously seen writing 'A Day In The Death', and perhaps more importantly, a writer for Big Finish, I am hopeful this will be good! The link also provides information on how to listen to it if you're outside the UK.

The title of the miniseries they're doing next year has also been announced: 'Children of Earth', whatever that might mean. So there really is going to be a five-part honest to goodness plot, what show am I watching again? *g* I'm really interested to see what it's like with the new format, yet simultaneously sadfacing about British telly's continued aversion to lengthy shows. *sigh* It's a long time to 2010!

And lastly, I am so pleased the Who vid lovefest that I posted yesterday seems to be spreading the warm fuzzies out a little. This was the aim! I love my show and its immense amount of hugging.

Recs!

It started with this:

Riding a Bicycle by [livejournal.com profile] cherryfeather
Jack/Ianto, R
Alien artifacts with unpredictable effects leave a highly amused Ianto with a female Jack.

Which is made of win and all things good. In the story, Gwen and Owen also get genderswapped, and I mentioned that hearing more about their adventures would be awesome. Sometimes, ask and ye shall receive!

Soap Bubbles by [livejournal.com profile] cherryfeather
Owen/Tosh with a side of Jack/Ianto, R
In this story, Jack and Ianto head out for a date while Owen and Tosh autopsy an alien and discover a very immediate reason why Torchwood Three needs more than one shower.

Highly enjoyable all round. Hormones! Shenanigans! Just awesome, thank you, Liz. :D

And, oh dear. I appear to be developing a thing for girl!Jack. I'm going to turn into one of those people in fandom, aren't I. Oh well! *adds to to-write list*

And now I'm off to delve a bit more into all the delightful stuff that's been posted for [livejournal.com profile] femslash08 - many fandoms! many pairings! much shiny! I kicked that fest off to a good start with this last night:

your mouth like an ocean by [livejournal.com profile] musesfool
Firefly, River/Kaylee, PG-13
River pretends Kaylee's the sun and she's the moon, and they are floating out in space.

Gorgeous.

And lo, the Doctor Who post-finale creative explosion! Marvellous. A couple of recs below the spoiler cut, plus a brief chat on why I'm reading some types of stories much more readily than others.

4x13 spoilers! )

And thus a half-year of delightful Whoverse goodness comes to an end. *sadface* But! There is something to keep me occupied! Adventures in the Big Gay Multiverse Space Opera can continue apace what with SGA coming back on air tonight, so that's something. It does amuse me how you have Torchwood, which is actually really gay, Doctor Who, which is also pretty gay, and then Atlantis, which is incredibly gay by accident. And I have new evidence for this! For those playing along at home, the premier for Season Five has been touted via a lot of very bad, no good photo-shopped publicity shots, but this latest one, seen via [livejournal.com profile] sheafrotherdon, has found a new level of unintentional hilarity.

seriously, who makes this stuff? no spoilers. )

Let's have a post of links; it's been a while.

A comm rec!

* [livejournal.com profile] horizonssing, a prompt-a-day Jack/Ianto community that's going to be running through July a la HP's famous [livejournal.com profile] dogdaysofsummer. I'm sure it's going to be a hit and produce all sorts of stuff, I'm very much looking forward to it.

A fic rec!

* Far Off, Like A Dull Rumour Of Some Other War, by [livejournal.com profile] paperclipbitch
Torchwood; Gerald/Harriet; PG-13; spoilers through 2x12
“What’s the point of trying to save the world if it’s going to end anyway?”

Historical Torchwood fic, hurrah. A source of deep joy in of itself, and when it's an opus written by one of the best writers in the fandom, well. It's World War One beautifully brought to life, with added aliens. Honestly, this reads just as well as original fic, but there are wonderful, subtle ties into the modern day series too.

Two vid recs!

* History Repeating, by [livejournal.com profile] rhoboat
Doctor Who; spoilers through Series 3
History repeats for the Doctor.

I haven't been able to stop watching this, it's a little embarrassing. Fun, catchy, perfectly edited, and draws out all sorts of neat little parallels between Rose and Martha's tenures in the TARDIS.

* This Is Everything, by [livejournal.com profile] sol_se
Doctor Who/Torchwood; spoilers through TW 2x03; Jack/various
Baby, this is the last honest look I'll ever give.

Short, punchy, fantastic song choice, and makes me oh, Jack quite extravagantly, so a winner all round!

---

And lastly, a canon question - do we have anything solid, timeline wise, between Last of the Time Lords and The Sontaran Stratagem? Or does it just generally fall under that category of 'it's a been a while'. And where would Reset fit in? This, theoretically, is for the Martha/Tom fic I'd be writing if my brain was working, and so I ask mostly in order to check I'm not missing anything obvious such that I mess up before I even start.

Whee, I'm having a blast at Remix. So much shiny and win! More batches of links forthcoming, but here's three really fabulous Doctor Who stories I've read so far.

Hello, Doctor (My Old Friend Remix)
PG-13; ensemble cast
Remix of [livejournal.com profile] shaggydogstail's Hello, Doctor
The Doctor's view of the prank calls.

The original is terribly amusing, and this is fantastic as well as the Doctor calls around old friends and acquaintances trying to get to the bottom of whoever keeps prank calling him. Very nicely done.

Going Home (The Return of Return to Gallifrey Remix)
PG; The Doctor, others
Remix of [livejournal.com profile] nopejr's Return
I bring life, Rose says and Jack last gasps in reverse and far away, too far away for the imagination to encompass, Gallifrey coalesces in the darkness. The Doctor, racked by regeneration, mistakes the change for part of his own.

This is very cool, with paradoxes and Time Lords and plottiness, oh my!

The Boy Who Killed Time (The Last Love Song Remix)
PG; The Doctor, Martha, others
Remix of [livejournal.com profile] netgirl_y2k's The Boy Who Killed Time
There are ghosts in the TARDIS, and music in the corridors.

This is amazing. I'm not sure I can really do justice to it, but it's haunting and extremely well told. The Doctor and Martha travel around the universe while things begin to unravel around them.
such_heights: amy and rory looking at a pile of post (hp: i open at the close)
[livejournal.com profile] remixredux08 has gone live, oh joyous day. And look what I got!

The Art of Memory (Bold and Lonely Remix)
Doctor Who; G; Susan, Romana, Rose, Jack, Martha
The Doctor's a hard man to forget.

Some excellent soul has taken the first Who thing I wrote, this teensy ficlet, and spun it into a wonderful series of character studies, five beautifully written tributes to five awesome people. I love it to bits!

I can't wait to plunge into the archive properly tomorrow, and I'll be sure to pluck out some of the highlights and spam you all with links. :D

Also, ganked off various people: if you would care to make a guess sometime over the week about which story in there is mine, please do so below! I think it's pretty spottable, myself, and I will celebrate any successful guesses in the shape of ficlets.
