Wow, I have barely updated since I started my new job. Turns out it's quite hard to get back into the swing of 9-5 after being out of work for two months, who knew.

I have managed to watch some of the great vids being posted recently though, so here have some recs.

Zero by [personal profile] sweetestdrain (Natasha)
This is a brilliant look at Natasha over all the films so far, covering her central role in the story and how she's the one who assembled the Avengers.

1941 by [personal profile] rhoboat (Peggy)
Great song choice, great editing, great series overview. Peggy! \o/

I Lived by [personal profile] flummery (Steve/Peggy)
*ugly crying* their love is so tragic. sob. But really this is actually wonderfully optimistic in tone, because both of them are living the heck out of their lives even though they're apart. The bittersweet tinge is a punch in the gut though.

Korra, Sense8, Doctor Who, Mad Max: Fury Road

Landsailor by [personal profile] skygiants (Legend of Korra, Jinora)
A really beautiful overview of Jinora's arc and all the themes therein.

Breathe Me by [personal profile] butterfly (Sense8, ensemble)
Ahhhh my heart. I love this cluster so muuch, beloved darlings.

Survivor by [personal profile] odessie (Doctor Who, multi era)
This is the BEST. It is what my heart is made of. Companions having wonderful post-Doctor lives and being friends and being amazing. It's beautifully structured, every time a new character was introduced I shrieked a little bit.

Na Na Na by [personal profile] violace (Mad Max: Fury Road)
THIS IS SO AWESOME. Inspired song choice and a fantastic whirlwind ride through this film. I have watched it many times and I love it.

Today we got sent the draft script for our ceremony from the registrar, and it's my hen night this weekend, and our flat is covered in RSVP cards and robots and the constituent parts of centrepieces, all of which leads me to conclude that time has gone past inordinately quickly and I am in fact marrying [personal profile] happydork in two and a bit weeks.

Which is tremendously exciting, and also a little bit surreal. But then I sneak a peek at our wedding rings, or remember awesome little things we have planned for the day, and actually it's all totally great.

Also, this is late notice, but we haven't actually started putting together the decorations yet, and if you would like to contribute, you can decorate one of these awesome robots and send it to us, digitally or physically. If we have it on Friday 11th it'll go up in the hall, and if we have it this weekend it might also be included in something else we're planning. <3

I am super into [personal profile] thuviaptarth's latest vid right now.

Summary: Engineering is a process of iterative development.

This is a really stylish, cool vid, with a great song choice and some fantastic editing, which is all the icing on a delicious cake of feels. It's about how Tony works and improves and tries and fails and tries again, both with the suits and with people - his relationships with Rhodey and Pepper are beautifully foregrounded, which delights me.

It was my birthday on Wednesday! Thank you everyone who left well wishes for me on various corners of the internet. <3

[personal profile] purplefringe made me the most epic Captain America vid of all time. It's to Don't Stop Believin', it's Steve/Sam, it's all my hopes and dreams in fanvid form. :D :D :D :D

And [personal profile] raven wrote me a wonderful DS9 Kira/Dax story, Signal Fire, which is beautiful and gave me many feelings.

Also [personal profile] happydork has taken up knitting and is filling our home with joy. There's a TARDIS all for me and a Jaegar so far.

So the entirety of the senior staff at my work are away atm at a conference, which means there's not a whole lot for me to do and no one who can see my computer screen.

I'm having a lot of MCU feels at work right now is what I'm saying. Here are some stories I've enjoyed! Spoilers from here on in.

What I've read

I think my most major recent read has been a piece of Downton Abbey/Avengers crossover fic in which Thomas Barrow is transported to modern times and becomes Tony Stark's butler. Which is one of those things that seems ridiculous at first glance but the author completely sells it to you, and 87k later you're entirely on board.

(I've barely watched Downton! I really don't care much for Thomas! *hands*)

Tony Stark Meets an Extremely Unimpressed Time Traveler, or, Thomas Barrow Makes a Surprisingly Good 21st Century Butler (87671 words) by Alex51324
Chapters: 3/3
Fandom: Downton Abbey, The Avengers (Marvel Movies)
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Thomas Barrow/Tony Stark
Characters: Thomas Barrow, Tony Stark, Steve Rogers
Additional Tags: Time Travel, Butlers, Crossover

In which Tony Stark ditches a boring party, makes an addition to the household staff, throws a much better party, and tries not to sexually harass his new butler.

Or,In which Thomas Barrow has a little trouble getting home from the pub, is generally unimpressed with many aspects of the 21st century, never thought of himself as a conservative dresser before, and may or may not be falling in lust with his new employer.

tl:dr: Thanks to time travel, Thomas Barrow becomes the Avengers' butler.

I enjoyed this immensely, I really did. Well worth the read if you've got a hankering to sit down with a long fic where a very deadpan butler is entirely unimpressed with the 21st century.

What I'm Reading

Trying very hard to actually finish some of the many books on my to-read list. Currently about a third of the way through Rosemary Kirstein's The Steerswoman, which is lovely. Lots of excellent female characters, road tripping, and a lot of great stuff on exploration and study and the scientific method.

What I'll Read Next

I have a mighty need to get hold of the new Black Widow and Ms. Marvel comics runs. \o/
such_heights: amy and rory looking at a pile of post (mcu: steve [suit up])
Today is a very important day in the United States. That is, Steve Rogers' birthday.

I plan to commemorate the occasion by rereading [ profile] kroki_refur's adorable Independence Day (Avengers MCU, gen), in which Tony Stark is unable to accept that Captain America's birthday is actually the fourth of July, what the fuck.

Anyone else got fanworks on the subject of Steve and birthdays? Or, you know, want to make some in the comments? :D

such_heights: amy and rory looking at a pile of post (mcu: darcy)
Post a rec for at least three fanworks that you did not create.

Here are some things I've enjoyed recently!

Five times the Paternoster gang had to call the Doctor (Doctor Who, Jenny/Vastra, Strax, Eleven, spoilers for 7x06) by [ profile] gnimaerd
Five incidents which required the Doctor’s intervention; in which the Doctor is somebody’s best man and sort of a nanny, Jenny discovers Harry Potter and Strax does not like when his mothers comrades are fighting.

Completely adorable, with some lovely guest appearances.

cup of kindness (Avengers, Bruce/Tony/Pepper) by [personal profile] thingswithwings

It's NYE, and superhero adorableness ensues. I love the supporting cast of characters here, and it's all extremely heartwarming, with lots of lovely character moments including Tony stressing out by actually caring about whether people have a good time or not. *_*

#TeamJanet (Avengers, Darcy/Janet) by [personal profile] aria

... it's NYE, and superhero adorableness ensues again! :D :D :D I confess to knowing next to nothing about Janet van Dyne, but reading this story reallyyyy makes me want to fix that, because she seems wonderful. Darcy's POV here is hilarious and very sweet.

One Mississippi (Doctor Who, ensemble) by [personal profile] kaydeefalls

I love DW vids that span the entirety of the New Who era, and this does a particularly wonderful job of pulling all kinds of visual and emotional parallels between the different parts of this one great story.

Red Football (Merlin, Gwen, Morgana, others) by [personal profile] sophinisba

In which the women of Merlin fight back against their narratives. Very satisfying!
such_heights: amy and rory looking at a pile of post (avengers: natasha & clint)
At time of posting there are 49 fills covering 28 different ships in the Avengers kissing fest, yay! Clint and Natasha seem to be getting the most play, both separately and together, but there's pretty much something for everyone. :D

I've written three things, which are linked in the post's masterlist or at the AO3: Distractions (Natasha/Pepper), Thrilling Heroics (Tony/team), and Houseguest (Bruce/Pepper/Tony).

Some completely arbitrary personal favourites by other people include all the things for Bruce/Tony and Clint/Natasha and everything involving Darcy or Pepper, but I particularly loved this Jane/Tony/SCIENCE (with Pepper and Thor) fill by [personal profile] spicedrum, Natasha/Rhodey & competency by [personal profile] sinensis and Fury and Steve doing undercover gay by [personal profile] jain.
such_heights: amy and rory looking at a pile of post (mcu: natasha & steve)
Kick Off Your Sunday Shoes by [ profile] leiascully is an adorable Steve/Natasha series in which there is dancing and making out, and by chapter 4 which is for meeee, there is a super adorable first time with Natasha introducing Steve to the wonders of sex, yay. *pets them*

Saving Me & You by [personal profile] purplefringe is an amazing vid that is a Saving Face/Imagine Me & You mashup that consequently makes me happy in my heart omg. She actually made it with my own DVDs without me noticing because she's sneaky like that.

It's gorgeous, and full of parallels and cuteness and Rachel and Luce and Wil and Viv and their FACES. Eeeee my two favourite lesbian romcoms in one adorable package, I shall watch it all the time.

such_heights: amy and rory looking at a pile of post (mcu: tony/bruce [pointy things])
Ah, my shiny summer fling fandom and my shiny summer fling ship. ♥ SCIENCE BROS ♥

(I think my shipping feelings re. the Avengers can be summed as a) everyone/everyone, b) Tony/Bruce(/Pepper), c) Steve/happiness, and happiness, sometimes thy name is Natasha, d) Natasha/people who appreciate her, and e) did I mention the everyone/everyone? So there's that.)

Anyway! Tony and Bruce! They delight me, and the fic is great. Here are some I've recently enjoyed.

Stark, A.E., and Banner, R. Bruce. (2013). "Biodosimetric Tools for Measuring Induced Isomeric Transition in Inverted Paired States." International Journal of Radiation Biology 89.9, 43-85. by [personal profile] thingswithwings (explicit, Tony/Bruce, Tony/Hulk, with Tony/Pepper in the background, 17000 words)

"And so," Tony concludes triumphantly, "you owe it to science, to yourself, and to the people of New York City to have tons of hot awesome monster sex with me."

This is so great. First there's the title, and it just keeps on being genius from there. What I love most about this is the fact that it's about how when Tony's into someone, he's really into them, every part of them and everything they are and this story does a great job of showing how much he enjoys both Pepper and Bruce and everything about them. (The characterisation of Pepper in this is particularly excellent.) And although this story is demonstrably about Bruce Hulking out during sex and Tony being super into that and the two of them figuring it out, it's also about Bruce's relationship with the Other Guy in a more general sense, and it works really well. <3

Living Dangerously by [ profile] penknife (Bruce/Tony(/Pepper), rated R, ~1600 words.)

Bruce visits Tony and Pepper. They're very hospitable.

:D Adorable domesticity is adorable.

Emergency Pants by [personal profile] some_stars (explicit, Tony/Bruce, background Tony/Pepper, 5000 words, Rough sex, breathplay, S/M)

"Were you worried?" Tony says. "That's sweet. That is always so adorable when the big guy worries about me."

The inside of Tony's brain is both slightly alarming and completely entertaining, and no more so than in this story. :D

No Qualifications Needed by [personal profile] isagel (explicit, Tony/Bruce, background Tony/Pepper, 2800 words, Discussion of Hulk sex. Size kink. Danger kink.)

It isn't that Tony doesn't like Bruce. It's just that he also has a few fantasies about the other guy.

I love me a good talking out a fantasy story, and this one is particularly great.

And lastly, a body building website interviewed the Hulk (as relayed by Joss Whedon) which includes the following gems:

You typically work on your own. How did you like working with your fellow superheroes in The Avengers?

Hulk: Puny avengers! They get in Hulk's way. Except iron one. Hulk like iron one: he's shiny and pretty in the sky.

What do you eat in an average day to maintain your 1,500 pounds of body mass?

Hulk: Hulk like pasta—sometimes too much! also big steaks, broccoli, legumes ... Hulk not eat Captain America's Nazi-alien nemesis! That rumor started by puny Stark.

Full interview at the bottom of the page here.

So I am bookmarking Avengers stories I enjoy over on my shiny new pinboard account, but here is a set of gen(ish) fic that has delighted my soul. All stories contains spoilers for the film.

Six Meetings before Lunch by [personal profile] musesfool (Steve & Thor)

This is adorable and HILARIOUS - I love the characterisation of Thor here especially, how he does start fitting in more and learning more about Earth but is, ultimately, still himself in all his fluffy labrador glory.

in time by [profile] fleshflutter (Steve & Thor)

So this one is more on the edge of gen leading to something more, but it is *lovely* - Steve teaches Thor how to slow dance and I have Feelings.

Epilogue by [personal profile] sam_storyteller (whole team)

Picks up right where the film leaves off, has great character voices, and fixes some things.

R&R by [ profile] goseaward (Bruce & Tony)

Tex-Mex, Lies and Facebook by [personal profile] oxoniensis (whole team + extras, some Pepper/Tony & Jane/Thor)

eeeee this one has DARCY and is therefore fabulous - it's great on all counts really. :D
