In the case of Left Hand of Darkness it's sort of a reread - I skim-read it very quickly for a book group once but honestly couldn't tell you much about the second half of the book and need to rectify this.
What should I read next?
The Left Hand of Darkness - Ursula K. Le Guin
Swordspoint - Ellen Kushner
The Persian Boy - Mary Renault
Spirit - Gwyneth Jones
Elaboration in comments welcome!
Also, heads up: the next London Collectormania is the first weekend of October and has a bunch of cool people as guests. Including Arthur Darvill, Alex Kingston, Caitlin Blackwood, Eve Myles, Joe Flanigan, Evanna Lynch, Diana Rigg, John Hurt and Armin Shimmerman. Full list and other details here. This is ameliorating my happy envy at reading all of your awesome Dragon*Con reports. That and having just booked tickets to see Arthur's Doctor Faustus at the Globe next week. \o/
Given we're now onto 17 pages of comments, a question - would you prefer to keep fills in the same post next week, kinkmeme style, or have a new post, porn battle style?

Same post or new post?
I would prefer that prompt fills go in the same post
I would prefer that prompt fills go in a new post
I have no preference
I'd be willing to help copy&paste/code the prompt list

Happily I did get to spend this afternoon wandering about with iambickilometer and contrarywise, so overall I'm calling it a win.
So, Dragon*Con approacheth! A poll seems in order. I have contact details for some of you, but I am sure I am missing people.
I'm attending D*C and would not be adverse to hanging out!
The best way to get hold of me at the con is:
+ Speaking of, roll call:
Coming to Vividcon this year?
+ There's going to be a UK Harry Potter con next year, Diacon Alley, cool! I think I've got more than enough HP squee left in me to go hang out in Canterbury for a weekend and watch the last film with a bunch of fans. Who's in?
+ And lastly, OMG DOCTOR WHO FINALE TOMORROW. *flails wildly, crosses all available appendages hoping for a happy ending* a;lsdja;sj I can hardly wait.
In terms of weekly viewing, so far I only have Merlin. (Well, I keep sort of drifting back to Supernatural, mostly via everyone's reaction posts - wow do a lot of people watch that show - but really, truly, I think that we're done now. The show I used to tune in for back in Series 2 is well and truly gone, and I can't get into the new thing even if it weren't for all the fail.) I am excited about Flash Forward, I think, mostly because I am all over that cast list. John Cho! Alex Kingston! A bunch of other people I heart! Save Dollhouse and Glee, which I won't be watching, anything else on/coming up in the States I should be tuning into?
So, catch up viewing. I want to watch all of these at some point, but where to begin? Also, guides to episodes I should skip etc much appreciated! Like, I gave up on Bones because it seemed to be going in wtf directions - I was cranky at Angela! do not want! - does it pick up again? Similarly, Friday Night Lights I hear dips then comes back. Psych, I don't even know why I stopped watching, what is wrong with me, I must have been distracted by something. Help me, Obi-Wan Flist, etc etc.
(Also, I feel I should note that this mood/graphic match up is possibly the greatest thing ever. :D)
Up and coming series news (lots of mild spoilers of the casting/press release/actor interview variety):
Regarding the new series of Torchwood, we have new trailers up (via James Moran) on the BBC UK and US sites. There's also (via lefaym) an interview in the Gay Times with John Barrowman and Gareth David-Lloyd, complete with pictures for anyone who's into that sort of thing. *g*
( quick thoughts )
Regarding the new series of Doctor Who, (via half my flist) the new companion has been announced. ( quick thoughts )
And finally, regarding the new series of Merlin, the BBC has a press release with lots of casting news, and there are con reports flooding on. I feel that this post is particularly relevant to my interests (via heathershaped). ( v. quick thoughts, long section of post is long )
liviapenn wrote a really awesome meta post on Star Trek XI and Kirk, Spock, Bones & Uhura: the new OT4 that got me conceptualising dynamics in a whole new and fun way. My eyes are all heart-shaped at this fandom right now. I will probably put together a recs post of some of my absolute favourite Reboot stories in a week or two, but in the meantime you can find an ever-growing collection here on my delicious account.
Speaking of Star Trek. Your opinions, let me canvas them. It seems to me that lots and lots of us are getting very fannish about the new Trek without being familiar with TOS, or are familiar with TOS but have a desire to rewatch it. I have a vague notion of throwing up a post, say, once a week about a particular episode, and there can be picspam and summaries and parodies and fic and icons and discussions and recs, whatever people wanted. I'm leaning towards hosting it on my journal rather than creating a community, because I think that will make it easier for people to dip in and out as they wish. I'd also want to host it all on one journalling site, which makes sense for discussion, and that would probably be Dreamwidth (much longer comment limits, for one thing), and folks without Dreamwidth accounts could participate via OpenID -- though, if you're still after an account, there are invites all over the place right now, so I can definitely either give you one or source one out for you. Also, if people who didn't subscribe to me wanted to participate, they could do so by tracking my star trek rewatch tag, either on Dreamwidth or LJ.
If there's sufficient interest (to be honest, that can pretty much mean 'anyone apart from me') over the weekend, then I will announce the first episode on Monday, and throw up a discussion post next weekend.
( click for polling! )
( who's your favourite? )
This post on Dreamwidth. Fyi: you can vote over there with OpenID if you so wish, and I'll be interested to see how the results turn out!
( who's your favourite? )
This post on LiveJournal. I'll be interested to see how the results differ!
The fannish end-of-year meme that's been flying around:
Your main fandom of the year? Doctor Who&Torchwood
Your favourite film watched this year? The Dark Knight, followed by Iron Man and Juno.
Your favourite book read this year? I picked up Neil Gaiman's American Gods for the first time, then couldn't put it down. My favourite of his now, definitely. ♥
Your favourite album or song to listen to this year? Sigur Rós's Með suð í eyrum við spilum endalaust was this year, right? I love that album to pieces. I also listened to a lot of Bloc Party, Tegan and Sara, and Jump, Little Children, amongst others.
Your favourite TV show of the year? Doctor Who&Torchwood (no, I'm not choosing, you can't make me, though Torchwood might win just because its levels of awesome were so unexpected), with honorary mentions to Supernatural and Pushing Daisies, and it was last year I mainlined and fell in love with Stargate: Atlantis.
Your favourite LJ community of the year? The stories at dw_cross were glorious, and rs_small_gifts was fantastic last month.
Your best new fandom discovery of the year? SGA. In retrospect I'm really surprised it took me this long to catch on, because a) dorks in space who live in a flying city, and b) I think it might have the single most talented and imaginative fandom I've ever seen, good grief. Merlin's definitely the best discovery of the last month, though. :D
Your biggest fandom disappointment of the year? Falling out of love with Heroes. Certain parts of 'Journey's End'. SGA getting cancelled right at the peak of my love, Pushing Daisies getting cancelled way before its time. :(
Your TV boyfriend of the year? John Sheppard (my love, it is pure and queer and true)
Your TV girlfriend of the year? Martha Jones (♥ ♥ ♥, basically)
Your biggest squee moment of the year? Torchwood's 2x01, no question. LO IT WAS SUDDENLY BRILLIANT. Gwen was made of win! James Masters! Tosh and Owen were made of adorable! Oh JACK! Ianto Jones's awesome defied all known measures! THAT OFFICE SCENE omg. *shipper arms of joy*
The most missed of your old fandoms? Oh, Harry Potter. I never truly left you, but most of us are going our separate ways now, myself included. But we had the best of times, truly.
The fandom you haven't tried yet, but want to? I'm going to be caught up on the Sarah Jane Adventures one of these days, I swear. I'm also planning on mainlining BSG at some point and getting into the Sarah Conner Chronicles.
Your biggest fan anticipations for the New Year All the stuff this new Merlin fandom's going to produce. Torchwood coming back! I really, really miss my Team Cardiff. A year of pretty much all my fandoms being relatively closed canon, hopefully leading to lots of fan activity. Oh, and I'm looking forward to Dollhouse as well.
Torchwood fen! Speaking of fan activity, I am thinking of running a spring/summer genfic exchange, depending on if I can work out a schedule that will not clash horribly with offline things, motivated mostly because I want more Torchwood gen in my life. Thus, a quick poll!
Originally, this post was going to be the 15 Unpopular Opinions meme floating around Who fandom, but I wrote them and then realised they were all variations on the theme "I like this character/ship/episode that some people don't!". I think that is not exactly the point. Ah well, chipper to the bitter end, that is me. But let's make this a Doctor Who post regardless.
This post with its photo of Noel Clarke and Freema Agyeman from the TDK premier is amazingly cute. Cast friendships ftw! ♥
Now, it is poll time. avendya did this at the end of Series 3 (you can view that poll here) and I thought I would resurrect it now, pitting the episodes from each series against each other. I've done a minor amount of tweaking, merging all the two-parters as one option save the finales and moving a couple of episodes so they're against other single episode stories. Some of these are really hard, some I'm pretty sure I can guess the outcomes of already. So, which episodes do you like best?
If you're gnashing your teeth at some of those, don't worry; so am I! And please, do share your thoughts on which you like best and why.
eta: Oops, nearly forgot. Now you've trawled your way through that, answer me this. Classic or New Who answers welcomed. What's your all-time favourite Doctor Who story? There'd be a poll for this too, but apparently LJ's fed up with me now.
Because eee, I was watching 'Everything Changes' again and I'd forgotten how much fun it is, the way they set up Torchwood as being so sinister and enigmatic and yet entirely irresistible, and how so many of the themes of the programme at large are introduced. It's fun going back and seeing the Gwen-Jack dynamic right when it first started, and Ianto being all smirky and mysterious and generally everyone being A+. Also, Rhys is far more fantastic right from the off than I remember. All in all, going back to Season 1 is most enjoyable when you know so much more about what's going on, and I haven't watched any of these episodes since the series came back. Highly recommended!
Anyway. Let's talk 'Exit Wounds' for a minute. A poll within, and ( spoilers, naturally. )
And then there was Doctor Who. ( mild spoilers for 4x01 )
