My First Wiscon

So, Wiscon is over, boo! Happily my holiday is still on going, as I am en route to go stay with [livejournal.com profile] pocky_slash and [livejournal.com profile] mcwonthelottery I AM EXCITE. But I had a great time at Wiscon and am super sad that it happens on a different continent from me. I hope I get to go again soon.

The whole con was a really awesome mixture of getting to spend time with some of my favourite fandom buddies and meet a lot of fantastic new people! Everyone was so nice and welcoming and helpful, and I am very grateful to everyone who let me tag along to things and took me places and generally looked after my wonderfully. Every panel I attended was really good, but the people absolutely made the con for me.

Thursday: I get in after very little sleep and manage to drag myself to the hotel and get rescued by my roomies [personal profile] aria and [personal profile] filia_belialis. Later in the evening there was geekeoke and I got to meet [personal profile] sasha_feather, [profile] raavne and [personal profile] laceblade plus a bunch of other cool people, and have reunionating hugs with [personal profile] were_duck, which was delightful.

Friday: a gang of us go see Iron Man 3 in the morning and I made squeaky noises over Tony and Pepper and Rhodey and their precious faces. Then I went to a panel called Queering the Text, where we talked about the ways in which fanfic can do really interesting things that explore queer identities and communities and how that's great and important, and also how it's a real shame so much of it is centred around white dudes fucking. I ended up being the slightly cranky femslash fan in the corner, mostly trying to make the point that actually that's lot of great queer fic about people who are not white dudes, only sometimes you have to try a little harder to find it, and also it needs more encouragement and feedback. Be the change you wish to see: leave kudos on a femslash story today! /soapbox.

Friday evening was the VID PARTY and it was GREAT. [personal profile] futuransky did a fantastic job and all the mini vidshows that people curated were really interesting and fun - I look forward to all the playlists eventually going up in [community profile] wiscon_vidparty. The theme was 'gender and technology' and I particularly liked the playlists that looked at magic as women's technology and also one about social skills, embodiment and communication media as female-coded and powerful technology, that was pretty cool. There was also a karaoke section, and that was amazing - there was Starships, and I Swear, and also they showed my Call Me Maybe, and having a bunch of fans sing along to a vid of yours is pretty gratifying.

... actually, I'm not going to lie, the number of people who made a point of telling me that they liked my vids over the course of the weekend was really, really nice. I felt like a little bit of a rockstar. :)

On Saturday I got to spend some time with [personal profile] chaila and meet some of her friends, which was really great. And everyone should go watch her new Twilight vid, Keep the Streets Empty For Me, which is phenomenal. \o/ TEAM BELLA \o/ There was a lot of really good discussion of that vid in the panel that was a follow up from the Friday night party, particularly in comparison to Katniss in [livejournal.com profile] bironic's excellent Boy With The Bubblegun.

I think my main topics of conversation over the course of the con were:

+ everyone is poly because Avengers, with a side of just yelling characters' names ('Steeeeeeve!' 'Rhodeyyyyyy!' 'Pepperrrrr!')
+ how Tom Hiddleston is ruining [personal profile] aria and [personal profile] oliviacirce's lives.
+ JOAN WATSON IS A FLAWLESS HUMAN (this also came up in basically every panel it was amazing)
+ how much I love Doctor Who companions, especially POOOOONDS.

So that was all delightful, thank you all for indulging my feels and for sharing your feels with me!

On Sunday I did a decent amount of lobbycon which was especially great when it descended into Tilda Swinton Appreciation: The Life. I went to a panel called How To Be A Fan Of Problematic Things which I really enjoyed - [personal profile] kate_nepveu did a fantastic job moderating and the conversation steered clear of getting stuck in the problems of specific works and instead talking about how we respond and deal with that and the complexities thereof. I think it worked because there was a sense that we're all the same boat, we all have things that we have love that have some pretty major issues, and what do we want to do about it. Given the difficulties that I have with my experience of being a Doctor Who fan, I found the whole thing useful just by seeing that other people have the same worries at me - as one of the panelists put it, "I worry about losing credibility with community due to loving something others have problems with." Which, yes, I worry about that too sometimes, but the take home point was "we mostly can't control what we feel; it's what we do about it that matters." I can continue to try and not be a jerk about the whole business, and that may have to do.

After that it was the hilarious COUSIN OF RETURN OF SIBLING OF REVENGE OF NOT ANOTHER FUCKING RACE PANEL, a fairly anarchic panel in which panelists of colour answer all kinds of questions that this year included themes like 'Potent Potables' and 'Squee, Flame, or BFF'. Some favourite out of context quotes from places including the hashtag:

"Please remember that if you throw things at people... just leave the aisles free"

"Now I'm picturing Benedict Cumberbatch playing Twilight Sparkle."

"Very special blue-eyed sparkle ponies, that look into your eyes and bond with your soul are NOT cannibals at this time."

"Who are you going to use as a human shield come the apocalypse?" "King Joffrey. That motherfucker has it coming."

"We're getting a hit from that quadrant...yes, red shirt." *awkward pause* "So don't die."

"Everyone agrees that at the end of the X-Files, Mulder and Scully reveal their true forms and then have sex."

"Just to clarify, my sex clones are having sex with me, though."

"This is a grandmomma ass-whupping coming your way straight from the Mississippi. Get right with the Lord."

"Are we going to talk about the carnivorous properties of Samuel Delany’s beard?"

And then there was fancy dessert salon and speeches from the Guests of Honour and Tiptree Awards and all kinds of delightful things, before room parties and finally retiring to watch some vids and then sleeeeep.

Yesterday I spent a lot of time hanging out in the lobby talking about superheroes and also being introduced to various Wisconsin traditions, including cheeseheads.

[twitter.com profile] aileenwithan_a: ...but the REALLY weird kind of cheese hat--
me: WHY DID WE LET YOU BE YOUR OWN COUNTRY?!

They made up for it by taking me to get frozen custard though, that was delicious. Also I got to cuddle one of [personal profile] oliviacirce's family cats, that was pretty great.

I've also gradually been infecting people with my Avengers/Elementary crossover idea, which I need to type up on here as well. Someday someone will write it for me. :D

And then there was dinner with [personal profile] fairestcat and [twitter.com profile] marnanightingal and friends, and then hanging out in the hotel some more and then watching Elementary at [personal profile] were_duck's with [personal profile] general_jinjur and [personal profile] raanve and [personal profile] starlady and that was delightful. (ELEMENTARY'S SO GOOD YOU GUYS. :D)

This morning [personal profile] starlady very kindly let me hitch a ride with her to the airport, and here I am!

I really wish I'd be able to spend more time with some people - [personal profile] makai and [personal profile] meloukhia spring to mind - but there was just SO MANY COOL PEOPLE there! Everyone I spoke to was really interesting and welcoming and delightful and I had the best time. I hope I get to come again soon!

Aw, sounds so wonderful!! I decided not to go this year, because dissertation and "I can go next year." Well, turns out next year I'll be on another continent as well!! D-: **cryface**

(And I've never been before, to any con actually.)

So glad you had fun and are still on vacation! Hope the rest of your trip is just as lovely. Thanks for the writeup.

I felt like a little bit of a rockstar. :)

That sounds fantastic!

In fact, this whole write up makes me long for fannish cons, but I've never been. As much as the big commercial cons are fun, I think a con where you got to talk about vids/fic/fandom community would be awesomecakes.

I was with you in spirit! (This was how I felt the entire time I was in SPN fandom. You had to cultivate your flist carefully, but the women-centric content was abundant once you'd done that.)

I really wished we'd gotten to see each other more! I'd often realize we were at the same panel as it ended and we left. It was really great. I was cracking up the entire NOT ANOTHER RACE PANEL. It was so good. The whole con was great.

Hopefully we can both make it again and then hang out more!!!

I liked your Martha vid!

(Hi, I am a friend of [personal profile] happydork's! I think we probably also have other mutual friends. I am not surprised we did not run into each other at Wiscon, as it sounds like we were basically doing totally different things, but yay Wiscon!)
