Entry tags:fandom: tolkien, recs, things: meme: fandom snowflake
So I managed all of two entries for this before Life Happened. Where was I?

Okay, actually, a merge of Days 4 & 5 - a wish, and trying something new.

Seeking Tolkien recs!

I've loved The Hobbit & LotR since I was very small, and have seen the films countless times, but never really ventured into the fandom at all. The recent resurgence of interest has made me want to explore a bit! Any fanworks, any characters. Things you've made yourself, existing rec lists/bookmarks, anything would be lovely.

Particularly interested in: vids, fic, icons, anything women-centric, team/ensemble-y things, anything that's not too unrelentingly bleak, also Legolas/Gimli because tumblr's given me a serious case of the feelings there.

♥!

Here are the few fics I have bookmarked. I'm eager to see what others recommend!

(bind you with love that is) graceful and green as a stem (Sam/Frodo)

The Still Point (Arwen/Aragorn)

Fanfiction by Baylor (lots of stories, focused mainly on hobbit characters/life in the Shire)

ETA: Try [livejournal.com profile] iconseeyou for icons. Here's her LOTR tag.

Melkor Was Here is a Silmarillion fanart blog. It won't make much sense if you haven't read the Silmarillion, but it's still pretty! :)

Seconding the Baylor fics; they are some of my favorites.

Most of these are old (and are about Legolas/Gimli), so I don't know if the links will still work, but I think there's some Eowyn-centric stuff there, too.

This: http://hobbit-kink.livejournal.com/2235.html?thread=3182779#t3182779 is newer, an AU where Dis rather than Dain becomes Queen under the Mountain.

I've just started venturing into Tolkien fanworks myself. Haven't had time to find much yet, but here are some vids:

If I Didn't Have You by melina: silly buddy-rom-com Legolas/Gimli vid. Make sure you check out her other LotR vids as well.

Éomer's Bootcamp by jaguarjedi22 and derkaiser92 (YouTube): Éomer is going to make a man out of everyone! (LotR/Mulan, also silly)

I amar prestar aen - The World Is Changed by diarmi: Definitely not silly. Very very beautiful, really captures the epic-ness of the movies.

A long time ago I retold the history of Middle-Earth with Galadriel at the center of it: http://archiveofourown.org/works/6191

I also can't recommend this Frodo/Sam fic highly enough. it's nowhere near as dark as the tags make it sound, and is wonderful: http://archiveofourown.org/works/531836

How are you with Silmarillion fic? It's my primary fandom, so I know a lot more good fic there.

Assuming that you'd rather have LotR-focused fic:

Éomer/Lothíriel: The-Princess-and-the-Horse-Lord (Yes, it's on the Pit of Voles, but the author mainly writes Silmfic, and this can't be posted in her normal haunt.)

Anything by SurgicalSteel (Accurate medical hurt/comfort as performed by an OFC Gondorian surgeon, in the time period before, during, and after the War. Heed the warnings.)

Of the girl-dropped-in-Middle-earth genre, but extremely well-researched: Don't Panic (I can't wholeheartedly recommend the site it's posted on, as it's explicitly no-slash-allowed.)

Knowing me, I'll probably think of some later, but it's been a while since I read substantially in Third Age fic.

I did think of a couple…

Out of Thought and Time by Elleth. It's a crossover with Doctor Who. Unlike the three I recced above, this one is short.

But what I forgot the first time was this: the Middle Earth Fanfiction Awards. They're a reader's choice award that ran from 2004-2011, and contains literally several thousand links to the best stories in the fandom, from First Age to Modern Day (which is a Tolkien-specific subgenre and are not modern AUs; though I think Merlin fandom had something similar with reincarnation fics). They're subdivided by category (genre, time period, etc.). The story info link next to each story's title link (which goes directly to the story) goes to the nomination page where length, rating, warnings, summary, etc. can be found.

For comic relief, Noelle Stevenson's "The Broship of the Ring".

http://noellestevenson.blogspot.com/2011/06/broship-of-ring_03.html

It has Gandalf as an old stoner in a bucket hat, a van called Shadowfax, and Nazgul riding fixies.

I recommend all the work of [livejournal.com profile] rubynye aka [archiveofourown.org profile] Rubynye. Her LotR stuff is mostly about hobbits, including Rosie and more minor characters that she makes into real people, and sometimes there is poly. (Also sometimes rape, but she always uses warnings.)

He Came to Meet Me is a fic and podfic of mine about Pippin's wife Diamond that's special to me.
