i suspect i might be getting a decent amount of use out of this icon

Internets, I am ANNOYED, because there are people out there having Wrong Opinions about Black Widow and it is gross and sexist and damaging my calm.

There seems to be this attitude that Black Widow's entire purpose in the Avengers film is to be a sex object. Now, even if the only thing she did in the film *was* stand around and look pretty, that is still a gross thing to say. People are people, not objects, and when you start reducing them to body parts the way that this comic does or this tumblr post does, you are Doing It Wrong. (That second link starts out with the premise that wouldn't it be great if Rhodey got to be in the film as War Machine, because he's a great character and also it would help further break up the overwhelming whiteness of the film. Which yes, yes it would! But, er, we shouldn't achieve that by getting rid of the only woman, and if you're going to saying something like "Why are our funds more wisely spent on a redhead with D-cups then another invincible robot man?" then that is saying a hell of a lot more about how you see women than it is about Natasha's role in the film.

The less said about that comic in the first link, the better. D:

So as a matter of fact, no, the purpose of all women everywhere is not to stand around daring to have breasts and therefore be sexually distracting (because having breasts in public makes you a sex object) and otherwise pointless, could everyone who thinks that kindly find the nearest exit to your left.

And besides, Natasha Romanov is in fact 100% fabulous, wtf is wrong with people.

As a quick list of her accomplishments, Natasha is absolutely crucial to the success of the Avengers Initiative because she:

+ Brings Bruce into the fold.
+ Brings Clint back from the dark side.
+ Tricks Loki (the freaking TRICKSTER GOD, GUYS) into revealing part of his plans.
+ Gets to Stark Tower in time to figure out a way to close the portal and prevent the city getting nuked.

She's absolutely indispensable as a member of the team. In addition to the above, other really fucking cool things she does include:

+ Plays her interrogators at the beginning of the film like fiddles, before beating them all up while being tied to a chair.
+ Flies awesome super stealth planes around the place.
+ Survives the Hulk to his darndest to annihilate her.
+ Absolutely holds her own in the final battle despite having the least weaponry or protection, before flinging herself up off Cap's shield to land on one of the alien speeders like a badass.

Not to mention all of the other ways in which she delights me in my heart! The loyal operative with a dark past, the deadpan, wry sense of humour, the camaraderie with Clint, the moments when she's frightened but puts it aside to get the job done anyway, and sheesh, if people can't see any of that and want to let their own misogyny reduce her to 'eye candy' then I'm really sorry about their lives.

Natasha Forever, guys. *_*

And joy of joys, someone's already made a fantastic Natasha vid from cam footage - In The Bullpen by [personal profile] caramarie, spoilers for the whole film, absolutely fantastic.

I think it's really fucking telling that people are doing that in a movie that, for a FIRST, did NOT treat either of its female characters like that (beyond the form-fitting outfits, but it's a comic-book movie, I'm willing to cut them some slack).

I would have other things to say, but my incoherence about the fantasticness that is Natasha from last post of mine remains, and also I do not know enough bad words.

Mmm. I'm completely new to Avengers and the Marvel universe, and I thought that Natasha/Black Widow was one of the best things about the film (in a film that had a heck of a lot of best things, admittedly). She kicked some serious ass - and as you said, her contributions to the plot were pretty significant - and I really hope that at some point there can be a Black Widow film (either solo or with Hawkeye), 'cos she seems like a fascinating character.

I 100% agree with and cosign this post. I was BLOWN AWAY by Natasha and her role in the film, the way they managed to make "being a superspy" a demonstrably cool and skilled thing even in the short scenes she had to do it. Her interrogation of the dudes at the beginning and of Loki (fucking LOKI! She OUTWITS him!) was masterful and had me cheering in the theatre. I definitely agree that people who say "yawn, eye candy" aren't capable of seeing women as anything OTHER than eye candy.

I also think the film was great at not making her have a romantic relationship or even suggestion one (I loooooove her comrades-in-arms relationship with Clint, but it's explicitly not romantic love, nor are we encouraged to see it as such) and giving her, like you say, a dark and mysterious past, personal guilt, all that stuff. She was such a rich character! And you know, in a film where the sexy evil villain touches the heart of one of the team and takes over their mind and forces them to help him with his nefarious plans, more often than not the girl on the team is forced to play that role. I was overjoyed that it was Clint (partially b/c I admit I don't care about Hawkeye lol) and that Natasha therefore got the role of SAVING him from that, as well as the emotional arc of working against her bro who she knows well and who knows her well. The fact that Natasha DIDN'T have Clint's role in the film is huge, actually.

ETA: ALSO WAIT I HAVE MORE TO SAY. The fight scene between her and Clint! Which is shot in not-at-all sexy ways and in which there is absolutely no reference, from the dialogue or from the camera, that it's weird or unequal for a man and a woman to be fighting! When no one makes a "didn't anyone ever tell you not to hit a lady?" joke! That was a serious fucking business fight scene, like all the other fight scenes, and it did emotional work and STILL treated Natasha like a badass fighter and not a pretty girl who can kick high (although she can kick high). And then she wins it, which makes sense because she's the ground fighter and Clint's a marksman, but it's a drag-out battle and . . . sigh. There's a line in Ces's story Written by the Victors where one critic says "John Sheppard respected women, and therefore would have no problem hitting one in the face," and that's how I feel about that scene, like the film respects Natasha as a fighter and thus has no problem hitting her in the face, putting her in a knock-out-drag-out fight.

Natasha was fantastic, I loved her in the movie and this is coming from someone who has a strange but intense dislike for Scarlett Johanson (for strange and no good at all reasons, but still, I didn't like her much). Her character was badass and I came out of the theater wishing for a Black Widow movie because now I feel like we are missing out, SHE NEEDS HER OWN MOVIE! Or maybe one with her and Hawkeye because I don't follow the comics much and I have no idea what happened between them but I need to know!

So yeah, haters to the left, Natasha was awesome, and my only complain was that she had a tiny little gun to fight big ass scary aliens, but she solved that by jumping on a shield, hitching a ride with the aliens and SAVING THE FRAKKING DAY!

it makes sense for a spy to have less obviously impressive and easily concealable personal weapons. they even lampshade it by saying she's not that kind of fighter. when what she had wasn't doing it for her she just took weapons from the bad guys. and used them like a boss.

Yeah, I saw a review that said Black Widow didn't have much to do in the movie, and then when listing everyone's powers, listed hers as sexiness - and I'm like, this is like those people who read Hunger Games and didn't realize that Rue was black, right? It's so inconceivable to them that a woman could do anything in a superhero movie other than look sexy that they literally don't see what she did.

What I don't understand is how can people not see that she is, in fact, the most amazing character in the film? And possibly in all the films ever? I went in to the cinema as a member of Team Loki and came out in Team Natasha, because honestly, she is right about everything and should have everything she wants.

Ugh. Natasha was in many ways the POV character for the entire movie, had a complicated backstory and she saved the damn world. I'm so tired of female characters never, ever being good enough.

So they all saw a totally different film than us, right? Because the Natasha I saw was a crucial part of the team and the plot and utterly kickass. Did everyone who is wrong miss the bit where she tricked Loki? Because, SHE TRICKED LOKI.

Why are people? And why must they be wrong on the internet so often?

[personal profile] anatsuno 2012-05-06 03:47 pm (UTC)(link)
She is NOT eye-candy, omg! I mean, far from being reduced to that! And her badassery is not even shot in a particularly sexualized way, despite her fighting style involving things like her using her thighs a lot, and the tightness of her outfit. She is hot without it ever hitting my UGH MALE GAZE TO THE MAX button, and that made me SO HAPPY. Also, yes, super competent. qsdjbsdfjgh Natasha.
giandujakiss: (Default)

[personal profile] giandujakiss 2012-05-06 03:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I know - I loved this! She's hot because the actress is hot, but the movie didn't make that a point, either visually or plotwise. There weren't body part shots, and in any other movie, the lone woman on the team would be used for her sexiness -she'd be sent out to seduce someone, and maybe kick his ass only after attracting him sexually - here, that never happened, and it was glorious.

(Worst offender on this point? The movie Sneakers. Features an all-male team of code breakers/thieves with a woman brought in because she is a brilliant mathematician, which you'd think would make her extremely valuable for her intellect, and instead the sole role she plays in the scheme is to seduce someone). I was so happy Avengers didn't fall into that trap.

Ugh. I hate it when I hallucinate entire scenes in a movie. Like the one where Natasha shuts down the portal and saves the world from invasion. Apparently she was just standing around having breasts the entire time, which is why the city got blown up along with the invading force... and the portal was left open for future armies to stroll through and attack the earth.

I also hallucinated that part. I really should not have had that second beer with dinner before we went to the theatre, I guess it like, clouded my judgment or something, because I swear there was this whole scene where like, she tricked Loki, too, idk.

Probably just my breasts interfering with my thoughts again though. Happens a lot.

People, people, ugh, as you pointed out in your post, SHE TRICKED LOKI. Like, let us all just sit with that for a second. SHE TRICKED LOKI. (I'm still kind of skeeved out by that scene for other reasons but not because she wasn't the universe's biggest badass in that moment. AND ALL WHILE SHE IS STILL VERY FUCKING CONCERNED ABOUT HER FRIEND AND FELLOW BADASS CLINT BARTON. BECAUSE SHE HAS FEELINGS. LIKE PEOPLE DO, and good job not turfing that to her being the ~sensitive woman who obviously has Feelings~, movie, I mean, if anything in that whole scene with Loki she's playing that ~woman with feelings~ card and MAKING FUN OF IT THE WHOLE TIME, because here she is back at work again just like the first time we saw her in the movie and ONCE AGAIN, THIS GUY IS JUST GIVING HER EVERYTHING. And her perfect LOL THANKS FOR THE INFO DUDE face when she's done is just, ugh, ace. UGH NATASHA, YOU PERFECT FUCKING PERSON.)

In conclusion is there a way for me to convince you to write Amy Pond and Natasha Romanov into a story together?

OMG I LOVE HER and more people need to understand all these things, it's true. Plus, they did away with the long hair (thank God), she doesn't wear heels, and her catsuit top might not be all the way up to her chin but it's not like she's got cleavage on display. Yes, it's a tight catsuit, but it's a pretty practical one. I mean, it is still a comic book movie, and for one thing, it's not spandex, it's obviously a durable material.

AND THE TRICKING OF LOKI MADE ME SO SO SO SO SO HAPPY. She's not just pretty and badass, she's SMART.

[identity profile] 2012-05-07 03:31 am (UTC)(link)
I'd like to add my +1 to the people pointing out that she played the god of deception, the gorram LIE-SMITH, for a chump. And, thus, wins everything. Ever.

It also occurs to me, if I can cross the DC/Marvel streams—she's Batman. Totally. I mean, she has no superpowers, she has issues, and she will take you down with brains. In fact, if you think about the aspect of Loki she went up against—not the megalomaniac, not the hard-hitting super, but the sadist who slithers inside your head and gets to you and smiles as he does it—that's the aspect of Loki that comes closest to the Joker. And (because it bears repeating) she beat him. On his own turf.

In other words, if these misogynists want to discount Black Widow, they must also be prepared to argue that Batman is rubbish. If they do not try to argue this, they are inconsistent; if they do, they will be the epicenter of a nerdsplosion of rage that will be visible from space. Therefore, they are idiots. QED.
