Month of Awesome Women: Jadzia Dax (Star Trek: Deep Space Nine)

Don't mistake a new face for a new soul.

Jadzia Dax

Deep Space Nine was extremely formative for my baby gay self. I can't recall when exactly it was that I realised that Bashir and Garak weren't actually supposed to be a couple, but it was certainly a surprise.

And then there was Dax, who embodied this glorious queerness. She's a woman! She's also been a man! Both of those things are relevant to who she is. I always loved the Trill-centric episodes for the way we got glimpses into how that works in her world, and it was great. Sisko calling her 'old man', her relationship with Klingon culture, past relationships coming back into her life, all of it was quietly really cool.

She was also a great early feminist role model for me. I grew up on an almost daily diet of DS9 and Voyager, and Dax along with Kira, Janeway, Torres, Seven and all the rest, made it pretty clear I could do anything I wanted.

Jadzia was completely fabulous, always. Whether she was being a science badass or constantly undermining people's expectations or risking her life in the name of honour and duty or enjoying the hell out of time travel or having an amazing marriage or being the life of the party.

And even after all this time, my crush is still THIS big.

DS9 *was* deliciously queer, wasn't it? I loved Jadzia so much - so serene at times, so arch at others. And her friendship with Sisko was a delight.

Once, a few years ago, I saw a baby in the Birth Notices, "Willow Jadzia". Someone obviously thought she would be a great role model.

Um yes. So yes.

Double yes.

Oh Jadzia, my favorite Trill. Read that story back during the fest, so glad to have seen that prompt done. Yes. Jadzia is probably one of my favorite characters from the whole franchise. Trill in general are such an interesting species and Jadzia is a Dax. She is always badass, always has this wealth of knowledge and experience from so many different sides: wife, mother, husband, father, and all these lives. And GUH she was always such a complex character and episodes with her focus, always bound to spark thought.

God I need to do a second rewatch. It's been longer than I realize since my last one!
